Strome is an exceptional passer. Higher level than marner IMO. But doesn't engage in every play like marner does.

That is because of his height and size. You see Corey Perry a lot more engaged than Getzlaf but in the end most teams would take Getzlaf over Perry.

Even Sundin looked lazy on the ice. It's just because these big guys can't be everywhere.

Sundin was 6'5", 230 lbs. Getzlaf is 6'4", 220 lbs, and plays a physical/aggressive game. Strome is 6'3", 187 lbs (will obviously bulk up over time), and plays a fairly soft game. He's pretty big, but he's not some huge power centre, and he's definitely a bit slower and softer than you'd like for a guy his size.

His height and build is very similar to a guy like Scheifele, and with time he'll probably bulk up to sort of Spezza/Johansen/Kopitar size, but I wouldn't compare him to the truly huge centres like Getzlaf or Sundin.

Sundin was 185 at the same age.

I'm pretty sure all three of these guys are around 6'3 and 215-225 so they're really not that much smaller if at all.

I've read different things about strome and have only watched him 4 times so my sample size isn't that great but does he have an edge to his game at all? Or is he just not that physical and soft in that regard? From what I've seen, he just seems an effeciant center, liked to hang on to the puck in the offensive end, didn't seem like he had a lot of elite qualities to his game.

I think so.

van Riemsdyk - Strome - Nylander

That line could be very good.

Also if Kessel doesn't get traded he could play well on Strome's wing. My guess is in two years Strome will be ready to play at a high level in the NHL and Kessel will still only be 29 then.

He's not that physical at all right now. But he uses his body to protect the puck well.

I think with Strome you are pretty much getting a Joe Thornton-type player

Their numbers are eerily similar in their respective draft years (almost 2 decades apart, man I feel old)

Thornton
Reg. 59 gp, 41 g, 81 a, 122 p
PO. 11 gp, 11 g, 8 a, 19 p

Strome
Reg. 68 gp, 45 g, 84 a, 129 p
PO. 5 gp, 4 g, 4 a, 8 p

Thornton was drafted at 6'4" and 180lbs.

Did some digging, here are some fun facts (@draft)...

Joe Thornton: 6'4", 197lbs
Mats Sundin: 6'3.2", 187lbs
Dylan Strome: 6'3", 187lbs
Eric Staal: 6'3", 170lbs
Ryan Johansen: 6'2" 189lbs

I would like to see Strome's updated height/weight, because I have a feeling those numbers are a tad conservative/outdated. The funny thing is, Strome is heading in a trajectory that has him in the physical stratosphere of some of the biggest and best playmakers of past years. For reference, post-draft...

Joe Thornton: 6'5", 220lbs
Mats Sundin: 6'5", 231lbs
Eric Staal: 6'4", 205lbs
Ryan Johansen: 6'3" 223lbs

Based on averages, it looks like Strome should hit 6'4" with ease, and possibly reach 6'5" (long shot) depending on his genetics. It's also very realistic for a modern athlete like him, with all of the training available today, to hit 210lbs (at least). Kids going to be a big, puck possession monster and it's only going to help his overall game. Scary.

Pretty optimistic strome hits 6 4 IMO. Most his age are genetically finished growing, aside from filling out. He could even end up being 6 2 at the combine.

Fast skating is never going to be part of Strome's game. He just needs to improve it to the level where it doesn't affect his ability to keep up with the play.

When he fills out he's going to be a beast in the offensive zone.

Everyone said that about Stone too........how'ed he turn out. lol Lots of time to develop foot speed.

No thanks. It looks good on paper but I bet the line would be ****. None of the guys have a high enough compete level; nor are they very physical.

If we take Strome and throw Nylander on his wing, we`ll need someone to get into the dirty areas for them.

JVR can be that guy to provide the compete, it's just he's gonna have to work on doing it consistently.

I don't remember Sundin ever being that aggressive, he just utilized his body and had some of the best puck protection I've ever seen. It was almost impossible to take the puck off of him. I'd even consider Sundin a gentle giant sure he'd throw a big hit here or there but he wasn't a physically imposing guy, I considered him a puck protection master.

Read the post again, I was referring to Getzlaf being aggressive, not Sundin. Sundin was indeed as you described.
