Keep him in the AHL this year. He isnt NHL ready yet. No need to rush him at all. Yotes arent winning anything this season so let him stick in the minors and dominate and gain some confidence playing pro hockey

He needs more time. I said this before he reminds me of Joe Thornton when he was young. Thornton had 7 pts in his first 55 games as a rookie. It didn't take him until his 3rd full season to hit 60 points. Player development isn't linear. Best thing for him now is to go back to the AHL and start ripping it up again. Build confidence and stick next time he is called up.

I think he'll be fine eventually, just needs some time. But I don't know if he'll ever be looked at as a guy you'd take top10 in a 2015 re-draft.

Caveat though Thornton was two years younger when he started, those two extra years are along a big development curve,

This is a really, really bad example.

Thornton at age 18 had 7 points in 55 games, but he was only playing 8 minutes a night.

Thornton at age 19 was a 40 point player(Strome was not a full time NHLer)

Thornton at age 20 was a 60 point player (Strome is not a full time NHLer).

Your recollection of a young Thornton is a bit comical.

Anyways, Strome definitely has the talent to turn this around, much like another 3rd overall Coyotes center did, Kyle Turris.

I was speaking more from a perspective that both are lanky tall centers, that needed time in filling out. Not so much of the age difference. They are very similar this way. Once Thornton filled out and started finding ways to be effective. He was a very good professional afterwards.

He was my 2nd favorite player in Erie, been great where ever has played hockey
and i agree that its way too early to tell anything what he'll become,he just isn't ready
but that said...

He is 3rd overall pick, its not like he hasn't gotten the ice time to do better,
fair to say, he hasnt looked good,at all,i thought he'd do better from the get go
albeit,his ice time has varied,so...yeah,i dunno. His ice time in numbers;

1. 14:13
2. 14:23
3. 10:41
4. 16:49
5. 14:34
6. 10:57
7. 16:10

8. 12:32
9. 12:46
10. 11:43
11. 13:42
12. 11:32
13. 13:32
14. 12:43
15. 12:45
16. 14:01
17. 14:12
18. 08:31

His box score stats in 18 career games so far:
- 1 goal 1 assist
- 1x 2min minor penalty
- 0.99 shots per game
- FO% just above 40
- 8 hits
- 9 blocked shots
- 10 take aways
- 0 give aways

In the OHL,when he played in the same line with McDavid&DeBrincat,
Strome played LW position, maybe winger position would suit
him better?...at least in the NHL,or like said by many before me
its just too early to say, anything.

How do you score 26 points in 15 games in AHL yet only 1 point in 11 games in NHL? I guess he's going to be a Teemu Pulkkinen type of a player in the future. How strange.

Have you ever watched an AHL game? Plenty of time and space to make plays although the physicality is closer to NHL than OHL.

Can’t believe people bring up Turris... lol. They are nothing alike. Turris was a beanpole lanky high hockey IQ center who played in the lesser BCJHL that needed to physically mature. I have yet to see Strome make a single nice play... I’m thinking his upside is his brother Ryan Strome (who also scored 49 pts in 37 games) at best.

He hasn't done much in the NHL so far, but he's also only 20 years old. Since before he was drafted, I haven't been a fan of his game, but he clearly does have good hockey IQ and a great (if slow to release) shot, there's significant upside there. He's tearing up the AHL at 20, he isn't NHL ready yet, but he's been performing well overall since being drafted, better than I expected honestly. I've always seen his upside as "boring but solid 2C", and I still see him that way.

If he's still failing to do much in the NHL at 22, we can talk about him busting then. But so far he's actually performing at a pretty high level for a 20 year old, few NHLers were impact players at 20, guys like that are the exception, not the rule.

I wouldn't consider Strome a bust, he has done everything I would hope for a guy with his draft sock would do at the AHL level(I believe he is going at a 1.5 PPG rate). it's not like he went to the AHL and is struggling or even scoring at less then a PPG rate

I think more then Thornton, I prefer comparing him to Spezza(ie not your ideal guy to build a team around but a very good center non the less, or in other words anytime you created the top/elite centers list Spezza would be the first guy you leave off the list or your cut off point)

40pts in 25 games in the AHL. Why is he so dominant in the minors but can barely get a point in the NHL? He gets criticized a lot on this forum, but obviously the talent is there. I can't see this guy not having success in the NHL with the numbers he's put up in the minors his rookie season.

He need to be in the top 6 and play power play!! Not 3rd or 4th line

I know he have to earn it but if you want Strome to be succesful, next year he’s your 2nd line center and he play at least on the 2nd power play.

The NHL roster he generally gets to play with is shit. His icetime is usually with bad linemates. He doesn't get to just feel out the game.

It kinda like when a great college quarterback is picked #1 overall in the NFL, and isn't successful. Yea, he's playing with a poor team, poor teammates.
Hard to tell what Strome really is at this point in his pro career. It's kinda of amazing that Arizona can be so bad for so long.

Last time he was up they gave him a decent shot with Keller. His most common linemates have been Keller and Christian Fischer. His big issue is that he isn't a good skater, and isn't particularly strong. Those two things, combined with the fact he likes to slow the game down allow him to be checked out of a game. Added to this, he doesn't get his shot off particularly quick. If he never gets faster or stronger, he needs to accept he can't slow the game down and buy time on the puck, which means he needs to make decisions very quickly. Sam Reinhart has similar issues.

It's unfortunate but it is starting to look like a very abysmal pick in a fantastic draft. Sucks but it had to be one team. Was this a John "World's Brightest Hockey Mind" Chayka pick?

If i remember correctly Maloney picked Strome

Skating, and the speed of the game in AHL compared to the NHL.

It certainly doesn't look "abysmal" he's 20 years old and destroying the minors. He can still be a very productive player!
