When was the last junior player (draft eligible) who finish with a 3 PPG pace or above. Mario?

To my knowledge the only people who have ever done it are

Mario Lemieux (83-84)
Pierre Larouche (73-74)
Pat LaFontaine (82-83)
Michael Deziel (73-74)
Real Cloutier (73-74)
Guy Lafleur (70-71)
Jacques Locas (73-74)
Marc Fortier (86-87)

So he would be the first to do it in 28 years.

Edit: Only Guy Lafleur and Mario Lemieux did it as draft eligible players. Everyone else was already drafted

Please let him go to a market that deserves him. Buffalo would he good.

Though, if he ends up in Arizona that could save the franchise.

Enjoy this while it lasts, we will not see a junior season or player of this generational caliber for another decade or longer for all we know, the term gets thrown around quite a bit unfortunately, but after Sid he truly is the Next One.

Might be one of the most entertaining World Juniors ever to see him going, wow, can not wait. 27 years ago a player by the name of Gretzky played in the tournament in Montreal, and now all these years later a 17 year old McDavid will be playing in Montreal, funny how that works.

Not to bring any negativity but mcdavid has another similarity to junior age mario. A severe discomfort in crossing back into his own zone. Watched live tonight and didn't see much in the way of backchecking. Im sure its just juniors and he'll try in the nhl but there was very little care for defense in his game tonight.

What McDavid has done this season has been pretty incredible, but I just had a few questions regarding his 2014-15 season and Crosby's 2004-05 season.

- I think someone in one of these threads listed the average goals per game for the QMJHL in Crosby's draft year and the OHL so far this season and I believe the OHL had 1+ goals more scored per game. Will that be a significant factor in comparing these two players? Also does anyone know where I could find those stats?

- In terms of teammates, it seems like McDavid has superior teammates than Sid did. Will that be used against him in this comparison or will it be even more impressive if he can get clear of Strome and finish well ahead of 2nd place on his own team, in the same vein where Gretzky was on stacked Edmonton teams but still blew 2nd place on the Oilers out of the water?

Honestly, nothing he does beyond this point prior to the pros matters or needs to be contextualized.

This is the best prospect to be in juniors since 2005. It's pretty impossible to deny now.

Whether he can be better than Crosby is a book that'll be written in the NHL.

I havent seen anything like him since Gretzky was playing. The way he glides around the ice is not like Crosby at all.

He could be as good as or even better than Crosby. I think sid hit 122 NHL points once.

Jim Fox (79-80) did it in his draft year, however he was 19-20.

I'll it again, you could see this coming a mile away. I'm not saying he was guaranteed to tear it up. But with the Eichel hype being out there. And the questions about the #1 pick picking up. A player like him was probably going to come out on a tear at the start of the season. Which is good for us, we might get to witness one of the all time greatest junior seasons, bad for his opponents though.

Agreed with this. Personally, my money's on him being not quite as good a pro as Crosby - I think his skill level is very similar, but he doesn't have as much the that crazy grinder/puck hound mentality that makes Crosby so special (when combined with his absolutely insane talent and smarts, which McDavid does have). Not that he's a floater or anything, he's very strong on the puck and a pretty tenacious player, just not quite to the same level as Crosby.

I really do think he's the best prospect since Crosby, though, and on a pretty similar level to Sid. He has a legit shot to end up better, but my money's on Crosby.

It is becoming pretty clear he is a better prospect than Tavares and pretty close to Crosby.

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, the real test will be after the WJC and the march to the playoffs and Memorial Cup. Will be interesting to see if he remains at around 3 PPG or if he somehow manages to increase his PPG.

I get the impression that McDavid doesn't seem to be a streaky player, and he is not on a hot streak at the moment. He is just so consistent out there, it is pretty scary to think that he could potentially explode.

Lafontaine did it in his draft year also.

Highlights of McDavid's latest outburst are up. That 1st assist is ridiculous.

I think it's going to be extremely difficult for any generational talent moving forward to top what Crosby's been able to do due to the way the NHL is these days, but McDavid may have a chance. He's certainly the best prospect since Sid. Can't wait to see what happens with his career.

It's just crazy looking at the Otters' stats vs other teams. They could possibly not lose a single regulation game this year at this rate. They are dominating at every aspect of the game.

And a very large portion of that is 1 player. Just insane the impact he has on his team.

I can't wait to see this guy at the NHL level. If he doesn't have an immediate impact I will be extremely surprised. I don't expect a perfect first season (I predict defensive troubles even if he does well offensively) but I expect him to bring whichever team drafts him from terrible to mediocre which is no small feat for 1 player at the NHL level. I don't expect it, but 100+ points would seriously not surprise me (I do think he will reach 100+ for his second or third year though after he adjusts and improves further).

BTW all the posts about who last had a 3PPG ratio in the CHL... those were in a different era. Yeah some guys stood out obviously but in this day and age goaltending and defense isn't as subpar in general as it was back then at this level. That's not to take anything away from guys like LaFontaine or Lemieux and co, they had amazing seasons. It's just to showcase how insane McDavid's season is. And yeah, I know scoring is high in the OHL this year. I think the Otters destroying literally everyone can be pointed at for single-handedly raising the goal-scoring ratio from last year's OHL. That's how dominant they are.

So even if his pace drops from 3PPG (I assume it will, hope to be proven wrong), I still think it's shaping up to be one of the best junior years of all time unless he completely crashes, which is highly unlikely unless he gets injured.

Everytime I think about this guy I try to temper my expectations ("he's on a hotstreak in the OHL, he will slow down"), then he has 3x 4 point games in a row to do even better than his previous pace.
