is he the top lime center the preds have been lookint for for over 20’years?

If Preds keep it up he should be avail right around where we would pick

Predators would be selecting a little too high to consider him, imo. Not sure they'd pass on the guys considered a tier above to reach on a C this early in a rebuild.

Catton could go anywhere from 3-10 so wouldn't really be a reach. Outside of Celebrini and Eiserman being the consensus top of the draft it's wide open after that.

I continue to wonder about him being a winger in the NHL, not that he doesn't have the defensive commitment or read the play well enough to be a center, I just think (like Keller) he could be better off as a dynamic offensive player with less responsibility. Especially considering he's slight & likely will always be more on the smaller side.

Like I said he kinda plays like J.Hughes in the WHL... but there's only 1 Jack Hughes in the NHL, that's why he's Jack Hughes.

(And you guys are right about my Ehlers comment, he just kinda looked like Ehlers to me with his size+speed, but he definitely processes things faster. He's quite the talent)

I think its the same questions asked of Logan Cooley in 2022 about his long term positional fit in the NHL.

I think he can play anywhere and it will depend really on the roster he's on.

What's the ceiling on Catton? I assume his ceiling is in the elite territory, as opposed to the franchise talent. Seems like Celebrini is the only player in the franchise player tier from what I can gather. Are teams drafting him and thinking he has a decent chance/ceiling of being an Elite C/Winger? I haven't watched him, outside of his highlights, so I'm mainly basing my assumption off of others comments and some draft insights about him.

I think he has franchise talent and will stick at center.

Release is quick man. Also his understanding of space on the ice is so great. Finds empty ice and then quickly accelerates after slowing down to create the passing lane.

I really like him as a player and think that he will make a very good #1 play driving center in the NHL or an elite #2 type of center on a SC contending team.
I agree. What I really like about him is how he makes up for his average size (as NHL teams still prefer big centers over smaller ones, all else being equal). He’s so dynamic and slippery that he can create space off the boards and evade hits, and he’s so good at finding ways to get either himself or the puck to the middle of the ice.

On the SH goal he drove right down the center with a guy draped on him and still scored easily.

he is their team. He has factored into almost 50% of their goals.

Considering how poor they are its incredible that, despite being a smaller/lighter guy, he's consistently able to keep them alive in games all by himself. And without cheating in his own end.

Obviously his speed is an advantage cause he skates better than everyone else but he's so smart at jumping into holes & finding plays despite that strength disadvantage. Said it before but he plays like Jack Hughes at this level. He could really be a force when he gets stronger.

Dissapointing draft season in my opinion
By my count, he has the 9th best U18 PPG of the 2000's, if you leave Bedard out of the equation.

He's .01 lower than RNH in the year he went 1OA. He's .05 lower than Parascak, but we are in December, and I think one has momentum and the other doesn't. I expect Catton will finish the best of the U18's this season.

You can look at it compared to Cristall, Petan, and some players that weren't that good as pros, and say he's not doing great, but he's also not a 1-way winger that flies the zone early and feasts on the power play. He's an all-zones center who drives the game at even strength.

He could be doing better, but I think disappointing is too harsh.
