Almost 100% he's heading to Europe says Damien Cox, who's been covering this whole thing closely.

Although apparently there's teams in Finland and Sweden talking to him now.

Bummer, I wanted to see him play in the WHL.

Here is the tweet
Hmm, I don't think any SHL/Liiga teams can even come close to offering the same amount of money that Zurich can.

Maybe it's the role/fit that Matthews is looking for, where would he slot in with Zurich? Guaranteed top6? I'd assume the roster is pretty stacked since ZSC Lions has won the championship twice and lost in the final once in the last 4 years.

Do you think the team bidding in Finland is Jokerit and as such, he'd live in Helsinki and play in KHL. Could in principle make over a million or so just for the PR value alone.

I can't see any other Finnish club offering more than 250k. Though it's basically for a "Barkov draft year+1" player, could be the most valuable player in Liiga and they pay 300 to 400k to the biggest stars in FEL.

I think it would be quite dumb if management focused on maximizing the pay for this one year, so I'm quite sure that development questions alone will decide where in Europe he will play.

Maybe so, but it's always nice when you have extra cash on the bank account.

What is the best place for development though? Going to Europe and back again in one year doesn't sound like the best development plan for me though. It would basically mean two adjustment periods for him.

I am glad I don't have to make this decision, for sure... ;-) However, I believe the amount of adjustments is not going to be an issues at his age.

But Nylander was drafted already by a team....with whom would Matthews play? Could he just be signed by any AHL team?

I take it you mean how the situation would be for this year, prior to his NHL draft. With all the AHL teams having an NHL affiliation, I would assume that no AHL team would be very eager to develop a potential competitor's prospect.

HIFK and Kärpät could. Both teams play in CHL too. In Kärpät he could play on the same line with Puljujärvi :naughty:

But the question is he ready to play against pro athletes, grown up men? Finnish League is also the most physical league in Europe and closest to the NHL-style of play.

What difference does it make if he developes in your AHL team or elsewhere? And with Arizona, Buffalo etc., there's a good chance that he'll play for your NHL team in the future. If he plays in the CHL, this chance is zero, so I don't get your point.
He would be a nice addition to any AHL team, so I'm pretty sure they'd take him.

He would take a spot of a prospect of your affiliated NHL team (one less prospect to develop) while it is not clear that he will ever play for your NHL team.

The creator of Minecraft is trying to turn Luleå into the new powerhouse of the SHL. They are certainly capable of paying, not sure if they would invest a ton of money in a 17 year old kid with no pro experience though. He'll also be gone after this year.

Matthews is ineligible to play in the AHL this upcoming year. I don't remember if the rule has to do with age or draft status, but I know that he can't play in the AHL before he is drafted.

The age restriction is that they need to be 18 on or before September 15 of that year, he turns 18 on the 17th. This requirement coincides with the draft age requirements so that no players can play in the AHL prior to them being draft eligible for the NHL.

That user was replying to someone asking if Matthews could play in the AHL in 2016-2017, the year after his draft year, when he would be drafted already, not this upcoming season.

NA players can't play in the AHL

(1) unless they will turn 20 before December 31, or have played 4 years of junior, or

(2) they have been signed by a NHL team and their junior team has been eliminated. The next year they have to go back to their junior team unless (1) applies.

Rule (1) does not apply to European players unless they play in the CHL or to NCAA players.

Damn, would have preferred him to be in the same league as Chychurn before they both get drafted by the Oilers.

Lol

You probably missed the bolded part... ;)

True that, but it strengthens your team, and winning is still a thing, even in the AHL.
Half the players of those teams will never see NHL ice anyway, so it's not like you had to scratch your top prospects because of Matthews.

However, my opinion is if he stays in Europe the coming season he would be NHL ready for the season after he got drafted!
