From Matthews' point of view it may have been better to go NCAA or CHL. Why? Because Swiss teams are only allowed 4 foreign players on the ice. As such, the pressure on those players is enormous. The situation is comparable to that of a goaltender, it's easy to lose your place and hard to get it back. But as we all know, youth talents can have "off" periods, cold streaks, and so on - especially after jumping such a talent gap. Secondly, ZSC Lions have no reason to particularly develop him: he'll be leaving next year. So if he underperforms for a while, he will be dropped, ruthlessly. And if it so happens that his replacement plays noticeably better, well, Matthews might not see the ice so much next season. This, obviously, would be disastrous for him.

I hope it won't happen, but it is a possibility.

Can you switch your imports in the NLA? Or is any import-license burnt after it has been used for one player? Either way, if he's doing bad enough to be dropped, they would probably save either side the trouble and just release him. If you can't change imports mid-season, I could see it more as an issue if he's doing "meh", isn't feeling great, but is still too good to simply be released for nothing.

You don't changed the cut off for 1 year.

You have to have some day as the cutoff. Matthews just happens to have a birthday that misses that one. No big deal.

Shouldn't be there some sort of discretion though, for elite players? It's not worth granting exception to a player that's tipped to go in the sixth round, but this just feels like a top player is missing out on a year of NHL hockey.

Pretty brutal that Arizona miss out on drafting their hometown superstar by a few days

This is my point. There are overwhelming extenuating circumstances in this case which directly benefit the league.

How much has the league labored over Arizona already? Matthews is the very homegrown talent that could turn the next generation of young fans into hockey players rather than opting for the 3 other majors.

The Tavares case was not as compelling. He was only a week too young but there was no other compelling reason to allow him to be drafted in 08 other than he wanted to play in the NHL .

I think when a guy is a mere 48 hrs too young for the draft and there are overwhelming circumstances like this, the league should not box itself in under a hard and fast rule that has no flexibility.

They should simply put it to a vote for the trustees and if it passes, grant Matthews a waiver.

You have a max of 8 licenses per season, 4 can play in the same game

With all due respect - that is a terrible, terrible reasoning. We can just make everything discretionary arguing like that. Toronto is a huge market, a huge financial factor for the league, is in eternal need of a center, so why not just give them McDavid? Those concerns for the teams simply cannot be the basis for a fair process. Cutoffs are there out of necessity. There's always going to be guys suffering from any cutoff. Making those lines discretionary just opens things up for arbitrary decisions based on reasons like your's, which are up for consideration if you're working for a PR firm, but for the main body of a sports league, those considerations are simply not fair. A static cutoff is entirely fair.

We shouldn't have this merely tangent offtopic overtake Matthews' thread, btw.

What does a top end salary look like? In the NHL it's like 8-10m for example. What does that look like in the NLA?

From what I heard, slightly above €1M, but with a place to stay, car, etc. Others will be more informed in that regard, though.

I don't think you should expect him to be among the highest paid players in the league. He's only going to be there for a year, as a very young player - the expectation isn't and cannot be for him to dominate the league. The league most likely is too strong for that. Therefore I don't see him being paid like the veterans that have proven themselves in the league or in other top leagues.

If he wants to make money why not just go play with the London Knights.

In theory couldn't he also sign a deal with an AHL team?

Auston Matthews has not signed with any team yet. Europe, WHL and NCAA all still on the table

He cannot play for London.

He is a western region kid so if he plays CHL its Everett, or someone in the Dub.

And he could not sign an AHL deal until next year

Couldn't a team in the AHL sign him to an AHL only deal though? he would be great for marketing purposes for some teams. I remember 20 years ago Radek Bonk signed an IHL deal before he was able to be drafted

But awful for him from a financial standpoint, I bet he'll make ~200'000-300'000 CHF.
How much is the top salary in the AHL?

What is the minimum age for an AHL player?

Per AHL By-Laws, the age limit for eligibility to compete in the American Hockey League is 18 years or over, on or before September 15 of each season of competition.

In terms of guys who sign specifically to play in the AHL(ie not sent down by their NHL team) I think there is a few guys making 200-400k. These guys are generally older, experienced, very good minor league players paid to make the teams competitive.

They could always make an exception for Watson if the league feels it would help them

He will go to Switzerland. Just a matter of days until it is official. IMO it's a great move for him as long as he adjusts to living so far away at such a young age.

Well, kind of a bad comparision - the top salaries in the AHL are just discounted NHL contracts, that are still in the millions. Pure AHL contracts, though? Probably in that general range. Well, he can't, anyway, given the minimum age.

I was just answering to a guy asking if an AHL team could sign him to a AHL only deal and I wanted to know if he could make the same amount of money in the AHL ;)

The London Knights can't offer him that kind of money.

The London Knights thing was more of a joke because wasn't there a story that they gave Patrick Kane a huge boatload of cash to play there?

As other pointed out he can't even play in London due to zoning restrictions
