I highly doubt he would make that much.

Cox said he would make at least that. I'm sure the $$$ he'd get would be very high. It opens the door for future NA players to go to Switzerland instead of NCAA/Juniors. Other players would never consider it but if then the 1st overall pick does it, now its something to consider.

Just got me thinking: Has anyone gone NTDP straight to the show? Eichel and Matthews didn't because of late birthdays. Hanifin and Werenski accelerated to go NCAA.

That sounds really cool. I wonder if the U18 tournament had anything to do with it or if it actually was an option before that. Maybe he just fell in love with the country while there?

Please be true, watching the guy live would be awesome :)
Swiss players who are on the edge of being drafted rather play in NA to keep the scouts attention on them. So it makes sense to go abroad. Talents like him are save for a top pick wherever he plays so yeah, why not?

Great news. I wish more prospects would do that especially the CHL ones since then they wouldnt have to play for their damn junior team after being drafted.

Wow. I heard rumours about him signing in Europe, but I was thinking Sweden or Finland. Didn't see this coming, if it happens.

The swiss league is good, they pay well + short traveling distance. Zurich is also a pretty awesome city. This is exciting.

I bet the interest towards the Swiss league will go up 100x among American fans if this is legit news..

I am curious how Americans feel about this? Choosing the CHL at times over the NCAA programs or USA NDP can cause some friction when it comes do international selections.

What is the general feeling?

I would think Europeans would be pretty happy, especially Swiss. Canadians, disappointed if your an WHL fan maybe.

As for why CHL players don't do this after their draft years, or during the final draft year, I believe its part of the transfer agreements? and the IIHF recognizes the CHL and its dominion over its players. Which I think should end once a players drafted, but that's another story.

Would be find of funny to see if he can go first overall from the Swiss League, would look strange.

If he's what i think he's, the boy can do a point by game next year. Crawford trusts and give opportunity to young players.

Barkov did 48 points in the year before the draft. It's only natural to see Matthews do the same with the Zürich Lions were he will play in a top-6 role.

About the transfer... It's about money. Getting pay one year sooner. If Brisson is successful next year with Matthews we will see more cases of it.

Two things I forgot to mention, If this story is true. I believe having an ex-NHL coach was a pretty big factor, seems a good development path.

Secondly.

This kid missed the NHL draft by 2 days. If there was ever an example for the NHL to put in some sort of "special status clause" this is it. Allowing someone like this who would most likely be top 5 in this years draft, possibly top 3 to enter early. Exceptional status if you will.

What a shame. I wish he had signed with Kärpät so he could have played with Puljujärvi. Would have been one of the best stories of 2015-2016 hehe

Will be an interesting draft year though if the top 2 is playing in Europe.

Kind of a slap in the face to NCAA. Tough enough when they lose battles of player rights to the CHL, then this American superstar who could, along with Eichel, change the path for younger American players by playing college hockey and still making it to the NHL just as easy. Then this kid pulls this? Not a good look for USA hockey in my opinion

Zurich is an amazing place to live consistently ranked as one of the worlds top cities, completely safe unlike many NA cities and with an unbelievable location on a lake in the ALPS

Hmm, was there anyone that young previously in NLA? How did they do?

To be fair, I know nothing about Matthews, never seen him play.

But isn't that possible that playing in NLA will hurt his draft chances? Or you guys think he will dominate?

Nice, excited!
Looking how Malgin and Siegenthaler got important roles on this year's team, I imagine he'll get plenty of ice time and could dominate the league.
Looking forward to watch him live!

matthews at this point is hyped enough and has been scouted enough to not hurt his draft status no matter where he plays.

I personally think for a player as good as him playing in a professional league against men is better for his development than junior.
If he get's close to PPG numbers he'll be more proven than a junior player IMO.

I don't know the ins and outs of these things but I'm sure there is money, tranfer fees wahtever involved here. I don't think the NHL, CHL, NCAA would be too thrilled about this and would probably apply pressure to ensure that it doesn't happen but who knows.
