Once he adds man strength he's gonna be dominant, what a player.
He's already got man strength lol, such a physically developed player for such a young age and just such good overall tools. He will be a top 5 centre in the league in 5 years unless some insane talent comes along in that time.
This league will be in good hand's with McDavid, Eichel, Matthews and potentially Patrick coming up, I expect them to be some of the best players in the league, sooner rather than later.
Leaf's fans got a real good player in Matthews.
I'm going to get a little greedy here, but could you imagine if the Oilers won the draft lottery and got Matthews. It would literally be Crosby/Malkin all over again, and the chemistry between these two is great. Its a shame that the world cup is the only time we'll get to see them together (unless of course you ask Leafs fans)
Languishes? It's not often that I see english word I have trouble understanding.
What's the message? Laine was bad but not his fault? That would seem like an excuse.
Don't really agree Matthews being "meh".
And they call us obsessed![]()

Winnipeg media's assessment of Matthews. Don't actually bother clicking on the link. They thought Matthews was 'Meh'.
Considering it all, you cannot help but get the feeling Matthews might be a Winnipeg Jet today if any team other than one as desperate for a centre as the Leafs had been picking first overall last summer.
Read the article. Absolute joke. Infers only a team desperate for a center would take Matthews over Laine. Also claims Laine won the FEL league MVP (without clarifying it was the playoffs one, not regular season) and seems to take shots at the Toronto fanbase and team history.
What a ****ing imbecile.
I won't pretend to have closely watched Matthews & Laine in the NLA & FEL, but I did watch both in the WHC and now in this WCH. Matthews has clearly been better both times. Add that to the fact that nearly 9 out of every 10 scouts also declares Matthews the BPA and you're left with a pretty pointless debate that should have been put to bed a long time ago.
The insane inferiority complex from this writer will probably sustain him through writing complete trash for years to come no matter how much better Matthews proves to be over Laine. Oh well![]()
After McDavid, I can actually see Matthews becoming the 2nd best player in the world.
His game is so mature and he's just special. No other words to say it. I questioned his skating a bit, but his hockey IQ is off the charts, what a player. You got a good one Leaf fans. He's adapted to playing the wing with no problem, as an 18 year old playing the best in the world, holy ****.
Him and McDavid dominated the ice tonight every time they were on it.
That's what I've been saying the more and more I see him on NA ice. The kid has an absurd combination of elite skills and the way he's dominating right now as a 19-year old against legitimate NHL superstars is crazy. He's not just staying "afloat" and proving he belongs--which would be impressive on it's own for the 2nd youngest player in the tourney, like Laine is demonstrating--he's legitimately performing like one of the best on the ice game after game.
Agreed. Especially watching him transition to winger flawlessly. Love the kid, he's your captain going forward. Look at how he stuck up for McDavid after that little ***** took liberties with McJesus.
Future top 5 players:
1. McDavid
2. Matthews
3. Eichel
4. Ekblad/Barkov
5. Barkov/Ekblad
I'd like to see him as Captain but I have a feeling Shanny & co will hesitate to name someone so young so they might go with someone else or wait another two years before naming Matthews (but I don't think teams ever wait that long). Either way it'll be exciting to see.
