He's earned it. Stuck up for his captain as well when Polak took a shot at McDavid.
Parayko is my favourite non-Oiler, Matthews now holds that joint title with Parayko. Huge fan of this kid. What a player the Leafs have, their fans should be proud to have a guy like him. Future captain and face of the franchise.
Pumped to see Matthews-McDavid-Scheifele against the Finns. The Finns don't even have their coveted underdog position either, they're the favourites. We're coming for you Suomi

Both Matthews and McDavid like to have the pick and dictate the play. We'll see if they can find a happy medium.
At some point I really hope they try Matthews at center.

Perhaps Matthews best qualities are his hockey IQ and versatility. He's transitioned to wing perfectly, I have no concerns about him having chemistry with McDavid. I'm very happy him and Scheifele will be on McDavids wing. And the nice thing with 3 centres, any of them can take a draw if needed.
When McDavid and Matthews had a few minutes together at the end of the game they were creating chance after chance together. Matthews fed McDavid on a nice pass to spring him and Gaudreau for a 2 on 1. Seconds later the play resulted in Matthews getting a goal.

Semenko and McSorley played with him and Kurri.
Gretzky loved having Semenko on his line.
Matthews hasn't been holding the puck too often so far. He likes to get it and quickly make a play, whether it's a pass or if he has space then he will carry.
The fact that he has been an agreeable linemate to everyone so far is a good sign that he'll gel with McDavid. They even had some good moments in the 3rd period of the last game.

The bolded is exactly the reason why Matthews went 1st OA. Not only is he projected to be an elite #1c, hes at worst an elite #1LW. His versatility is second to none in the draft. Hes literally meshed with every player hes played with so far at the WC.
AT the world championships Matthews was on the half wall during the PP. Hes now the net front presence at the world cup.
Kid has so many different facets to his game.

Personally I think his first game had some hiccups at wing and getting adjusted to it. Although a couple games later and he seems to be already comfortable and hopefully McDavid finally finds some chemistry with him. Pretty good when you were considered the 13th forward by many including myself at the start.

He's a very complete player. I agree, my observations match that. Kid plays like he's a 25 year old already, you can play him at centre or wing. Play him at ES, PP, or PK. He's got a well rounded game and already 215+ pounds.

.I agree, but have to take into account Malkins first year was after the lockout.
Saying that, his skating from the year he was drafted to his first year in the league jumped leaps and bounds. He took the lockout year to put allot of muscle on his legs, and fill out all over.
Drafted at 185 and started playing at 198 (according to old NHL.com)
Not saying A.M will end up being as good as Malkin, the Leafs are not that lucky,
BUT hopefully he can over the next year and a bit keep building his lower body and core strength.
Lets not compare him to others in this draft. All we care about is that he is a fantastic talent and close to a perfect prospect, physically, mentally and talent wise.

I kind of agree. I think he's the closest (or most likely) to be a true franchise superstar from the 2016 draft. All goes well and he might end up as the 2nd best player on the planet of the McDavid generation (after McDavid).

I am thoroughly impressed with Matthews' performance so far. I didn't think he would look this good, very excited for the upcoming season.
Yeah, even being a very big fan of Matthews prior to the draft I'm shocked he has managed his way up to the top-line to start the tourny. I knew he was a smart player, but I have been wowed by his IQ and ability to adapt and quickly find chemistry with people. This is a very promising trait going forward. I'd add, with all the comparisons to Toews and Kopitar, I think he has shocked some people with his moves. People see his size and just don't expect the finesse element. Still can't believe the Leafs won the lottery.
McDavid needs an unselfish player like Matthews on his line. I think that first line is just going to embarrass Finland on Sunday.
