Matthews appear to be a new age style of player. He doesnt really lack in any category and excels in multiple areas. I actually think he plays a lot like Crosby where he is so good down low and in tight areas. Probably closest Crosby comparable (for play) in a while

That's kind of what I see aswell. Obviously he is not as good as Crosby, but he reminds me a lot of him. Especially how dominant he is along the boards and strong legs.

A poor man's Crosby is still one hell of a player.

I'm not 100% sure about the Crosby comparison however. I think they both control the play in a different way. I think Matthews might lean a little more towards Forsberg in that way, but more of a goal-scorer (again, not saying he will be as good as Forsberg).

excited to see who he'll be paired with at the World Cup. Either way, that team is going to be the most exciting to watch by far.

I probably wouldn't give a **** if it weren't for the u23 team. Could do poorly and lose out to like team Europe or could win it all. In my biased mind they have the best centre in the tournament, and some other serious drivers. Think Parayko could be one of the very best D in the league as early as next season

I'm still hoping for an Matthews-McDavid-Eichel line, just for the hell of it.

Not trying to start a war or anything, just curious why eichel is seen as being ahead of mathews when mathews has out preformed him in all stages of development minus last year which is hard to compare. Since they were 16, the only time Jack out preformed auston was at age 17 in the wjc where Jack had 5 points in 5 games and auston was 3 for 5. I thought mathews was considered more 2 way while eichel is better at offense but the numbers don't seem to support that. Is it because of their linemates? Any help would be appreciated

The Leafs drafted him.

Eichel has some tools that Matthews doesn't possess, most notably his speed is much better. Matthews is an incredible skater for his size but he's not at the same level of explosiveness. Some scouts presumably think that speed will translate to more production in the future. Matthews tools aren't quite as obvious at first glance, he's just really great at everything. Eichel is more flashy and Matthews is more complete imo.

I consider them equals as prospects.

Where I stand as well. There's no denying that Eichel is toolsier, but as far as they can be compared at the same age he hadn't managed to use those better tools to be demonstrably more effective. I'd say they give Eichel a sliver higher potential if he puts it together.

Matthews is quite flashy actually; I've seen more flash out of him than Eichel to be perfectly honest. People just think he isn't because he also plays a complete game.

The only thing I can agree on is that Eichel has the edge in speed. Even that however, isn't by much.

the difference in speed is still fairly significant, but i do prefer Matthews over Eichel

It's mostly because of the team that drafted him, and the fact that this draft didn't have as much hype as last year. They are pretty equal IMO. Either or could be better.

Matthews' pre draft year resume being much better doesn't count for much around here for some reason.

I gave a reference earlier in the Matthews/Eichel thread that I might as well post here.

I consider it like a Kessel vs Parise comparison. Kessel has the god given superior speed and shot just like Eichel. His defense also leaves a little bit more to be desired. Parise is the hardworking gritty boardwork player like Matthews. His two way ability is good as well and they both are puckhounds.

They're all Americans too which makes this comparison interesting. In the end, both Kessel and Parise are comparable players just like Eichel and Matthews.

People have eichel ahead of matthews only because eichel is more proven because of his 56 point rookie season, which is very impressive for a D+1 rookie

I think a mni-Lecavalier is what Matthews would project to be IMO. Crosby is way too grinder of a comparo

Reminds me of a Malkin type too. Protects the puck well with his frame, great hands with a long reach, great vision. Malkin can get really aggressive offensively when he is at the top of his game, I see that being the same with Matthews.

Just start the season already!

Granato put it perfectly when he compared the 2. Eichel will dominate with his speed, Matthews will dominate with puck-skills and finesse.

I agree, I see him more as Geno, or even Jamie Benn. The skill and speed is there, and keep in mind he's still a kid. When he matures into a 21/22 year old 1C he's going to use that big body that's going to lean on you all game, he's going to wear down the opposing teams defenders and be a ***** to play against in time.

Yeup.. And that's exactly why these types of centres are so coveted come playoff time.

As Leaf fans, we've seen it for years (not in the playoffs, mind you).
The team's small centres just get absolutely beat down by the types like Kopitar, Eichel, Barkov, Thorton, Toews and Malkin.

Not really. Smaller centers like Tyler Johnson, David Krejci, Claude Giroux, Danny Briere etc... seem to do just fine in the playoffs.

How many Stanley Cups do these guys have compared to Getzlaf, Kopitar, Toews, Malkin, Crosby, etc.?

Big talented centres are more valuable.
