9.0 B in my opinion, he and Eichel are pretty much on par in my eyes.

It was always my understanding Eichel got the B instead of C like McDavid because of his strength and combine results. Well that and McDavid's higher projection. I think Matthews has the frame and potential, but he isn't as strong as Eichel. He uses elusiveness and stick handling to excel in puck battles where Eichel uses his speed and strength, which is a bit easier to project in the NHL. No one's seen how Matthews adapts to smaller ice surfaces and less time and space. We just have to wait till the World Cup.

Errr.. Matthews played on small ice his entire life prior to last year, so I don't really see that as an issue. I don't see how Eichel's game would be considered more transferrable to the NHL, because Matthews has every component required for success in todays game, such as a quick release, nifty hands, good speed, and good edge-work. Yeah, Eichel is faster, but I'd say they're on par strength-wise and Matthews is better in tight spaces, which could be a benefit in the NHL.

I don't see Eichel as being that much stronger then Matthews...he handled himself fine against men as well in the Swiss league and WC.

Combine bench:

Auston Matthews: 6 reps

Jack Eichel 16 reps

Of course, the weights are different but Eichel compares much better to his draft class's results here.

Eichel's combine results in general are ridiculous. He'd be among the very top of 2016's draft class in at least 4 categories.

Not

"I don't see Eichel being able to bench more then Matthews"

ahh yes good thing eichel is very strong up top, he can punch hard and beat up players.
matthews will use his great lower body strength to play hockey.....

I see that Eichel could impress the gym bros a lot more than Matthews could.

Samuel girard must be super strong too.

Pound for pound eichel is a strong kid, but Matthews has got 20lbs on him at the same age.

Eichel did have a big skating advantage which more or less made up for his lack of defense, but I think Matthews maturity compensates for it so I'd say Matthews is more ready than Eichel was

He's older than Eichel by 6 weeks, hardly much of a difference.

Just think how good Matthews will be once he starts working out and gets that man-strength so he can bench 16 reps!

The more appropriate measure of hockey related strength would be squats. Does the combine test for this? Bench press and chest strength is no where near as important as leg and squat strength to a hockey player

Oh really? then scratch that part. Either way I get a more mature vibe from Matthews

That's because one of these is the hairstyle of a distinguished gentleman and the other is your 10 year old cousin.

Other people have covered it but bench press really isn't what matters, appreciate that you actually did try to bring facts to the table unlike most posters though.

His leg strength and core strength are much more important, and Eichel may be stronger but I don't think it's significant. There is a reason Matthews comes out of the corners with the puck.

Eichel is a hell of a talent though, best thing about hockey is we're spoiled that we get to continually watch talented young players join the league.

It feels like another changing of the guard with the last couple of drafts. Just so much talent coming in with McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Laine, etc. Hope we get another era of high caliber superstars like the 90's.
