is it really that hard to comprehend why someone wouldn’t want to give max term for Byfield when you consider he has not played the position the Kings are going to need him to play? Is it really that hard to realize how risky it is for him to not be able to play center well and you now have him on your hands for 8 years?

Byfield has played well this year and has taken a big step forward but if you think that Byfield checks all the marks for being a star studded center then you are the one who’s seriously out to lunch. He hasn’t played center for a long time and the last time he played center regularly he played it bad. And yeah Byfield is a far cry from Kopitar at their age. There’s zero reason to take a stupid risk like that.
I can wrap the idea of max term for QB around my head multiple times vs the same for our supposed #1 LD. Would you rather owe $33M for Mikey, or $31M for Byfield? Who has proven more for that level of contract? I think I know which guy is a real top of the lineup player.

I'd rather not have either and do a full rebuild if we're doing contract comparisons on the Kings. If I was GM i would have loaded up on picks and ended the charades a while ago. We dont have the draft pick talent to build something meaningful from within and we dont have the UFA talent to push the team over the edge to something viable.

We’re not getting a rebuild as long as Luc, Doughty, Kopitar, and Blake are here. That’s the ownership’s decision.

If Beckerman is replaced by a builder, change may occur. But it’s unlikely anything like that will happen as long as the team is generating massive revenue. Any owner would stay hands off if all the hard work was done and your empire needed investment in other areas.

The franchise was at a historical low point when Lombardi was hired. Unfortunately we need to wait for the next low point for any serious changes to occur.

This focus on today’s problems are a symptom of poor short term thinking. And today, Byfield is not a problem. He’s a plus. It’s good the management was able to convince ownership that investing in a long term solution is the right philosophy. It’s the same situation as when Frolov was drafted, played as a rookie and was a real reason for hope.

It wasn’t that Frolov was the savior. And QB might not be. But if we’re tracking wins and losses, QB is a win.

Since February:
13GP
3G
11A
14pts (Leads team)
+10

Total TOI:
Byfield 259:10
Kopitar 241:18
Danault 238:30

So I guess he's the #1 center now.

Like I said in recent GDT

I hope he's answered all questions of whether "if he can". The ability is clearly there to take over a game in any way.

Now it's just about consistency and not going on prolonged streaks of scorelessness or, worse, timidness

When he's playing like he has since the break, he's unstoppable on both offense AND defense.

Just absolutely clowned the Eichel-Stone line, I've never seen anything 1C on 1C coming anywhere close to 100% xGF%.

I think his game has still left something to be desired over this span.

Hopefully he can harass McDrai in the playoffs. He's one of the few players in the league with the attributes to do it. Kings need to get that home ice advantage.

Byfield going on stretches like this makes him all the more frustrating.

Another poster compared him to Frolov and I think that’s perfect. Cammalleri is another good one.

Not stylistically or talent wise. But his timing in the franchise relative to the franchise’s overall health. Byfield is a very good but not great player during an awkward, uncompetitive time in Kings history. In 15 years, I think we’ll look back on his time here as we do Frolov and co.

Or, he's a 22 year old still trying to find his stride in a very very very good national hockey league.

Consistency is virtually always the biggest struggle for young players in the NHL.

If Byfield was 25 or 26 and we were still seeing these consistency issues, I'd agree with you. But he's still young.

If he's able to establish his game more consistently, good lord do we have a HELL of a player on our hands. I mean this guy can legitimately be an 80+ point center who's a DOMINANT 2 way force if he's able to establish some consistency. It'll be well worth the wait when he does this.

I’ve mentioned this exact same point recently in another discussion. I’m a little confused on why some have such super high expectations of Byfield especially at his age.

There's understandable frustration given he's a second overall pick. I get why people are wanting more from Byfield's D+5 year.

I agree he needs time and as long as he's growing in his talent and abilities, he certainly deserves that patience. But I think these are two separate discussions.

I think he may have another level/dimension with his physicality, and I know we'd all love the power play to go off, but otherwise, how?

Since the beginning of Feb at even strength:
-60.65 CF%--best on kings
-75 GF%--15 GF, 5GA, best on kings
-61.23 xgf%--best on kings
-71.43% High danger--best on kings by a significant amount

all of the above are hovering around 10% better relative to team

-13 even strength points, 3 more than 2nd place; 3 goals (5th) and 10 assists (1st) (and before we harp on the goals, his linemate is leading)...13 even strength points is 2nd in the entire NHL in that time span and 10 assists, no one has more in that timespan. And none of those other guys are playing the hard minutes and very few are playing C at all.

-PKing with Foegele has that pairing the best xGF% on the PK on the Kings in that time and one of the best xgas

Like, I love us having sky-high expectations of this kid, but this 22 year old is leading the team in most significant categories since the beginning of February. I think at some point saying "I need more" comes off as an insult rather than praise of raw ability. This is becoming Kopitar-ish levels of "we need more goals" despite bonkers production, more physicality (20 hits is 2nd on the Kings in that span, only to Jeannot) despite him laying the lumber lately...and he's taken significantly more hits than any other King at 28, showing how much he has the puck and what a target he is.

He does suck at faceoffs, I guess.

Edit: I'm not coming at you in particular; I'm just wondering what expectations folks have of Byfield at this point that he's not meeting outside of consistency.

he was drafted as a work in progrress raw potential. dont know why ppl are expecting him to be gretzky out off the bat. i said early in the season i would have been happy with him 40 points as a center. he looking to exceed that.

I think I've been one of his biggest supporters when many others were criticizing him. I'm not saying you're coming at me, but I just wanted to point that out.

I don't think the numbers tell the whole story. Production-wise he benefitted disproportionately from Fiala getting hot (not a criticism).

He still has some indecision in his game. He's still experimenting offensively IMO. He doesn't always follow through on certain plays either. And if you're going to play big minutes in this league, you need to know when to sprint and when to jog.

He hasn't put it all together yet IMO. That might be a good thing. Then again, he might just be one of those guys who always leaves you wanting more because he's so gifted.

Because there are some guys that come in and dominate as 18 year olds. Sure it’s rare, but this fanbase is f***ing starved for some pizzazz. 1 ROTY in franchise history? GTFO with that bullshit. Is it fair to Byfield? Probably not, but it is what it is.

Also, unrelated, what the f*** is this???? 😂

Change it back

You don’t pick long term project centers with a #2 overall pick. Byfield is in his D+5 season. He is who he is at this point. He’ll continue to put together some insane stretches and then disappear.

Let’s also not forget the fact that Blake and co. have never wanted to do a true rebuild. They were trying to get back to the playoffs as soon as possible. Stutzle’s whole scouting report at the time was that he was a day one NHL ready talent.

Nothing about the Byfield pick makes sense in hindsight. But that’s just more evidence for Blake’s total incompetence and lack of any real plan or vision for the team. Everything he does is blunted and obtuse and focused only on solving whatever problem is right in front of him.

Byfield was the right move back then and hopefully is starting to show that right now. I’m not a Blake fan but I remember that near the draft Quinton was clear cut #2 almost everywhere because of his potential, with some people saying that he could be the best player out of this draft.

This is absolutely untrue. Stutzle vs Byfield was a very real debate before and during the draft.

And now it’s not a debate at all.
