Speculation: Buyout candidates - midseason edition

But if he gets waived isn’t it just like 1.7?
They did waive him in the beginning of the season with no takers. Ideally the buyout is only $700k cheaper but then he’s technically gone from the organization at that point. He’s been in Roy’s doghouse all year and nothing he does proves he deserves to be anywhere else honestly.

Laine won't be, Gallagher should be
I see the appeal of buying out Gally. I agree it will be hard to improve the team as long as he's there with his big salary. BUT... we're going to lose a few vets in Dvorak and Armia and maybe Evans and Savard too. I think we still need Gally's leadership. Also, he has a decent year. We could wait one more year before buying him out.

Who are the potential buyout candidates next summer?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils buyout Ondrej Palat's contract. He has been poor this season.

Buying out palat is not happening.

I'd rather retain 50% AND attach a 2nd round pick to dump before I buy him out.

You eat:

3.5 mill, 2.5 mill. 1.5 mill, 1.5 mill= 9 mill total. AND you have to replace him for 2 years.

If your palat replacement costs 1.5 million dollars a year (which is going to be legit 4th line fringe guys), you haven't saved any money.

If you want to ignore the 2 years after he's gone, you're still looking at only 3 mill a year to replace him with in an offseason where UFAs are going to be overpriced as f***.

If you want him gone that badly, pay to dump him and rid yourself of the ENTIRE cap hit.

For sure, I would definitely rather trade him than buy him out. But after July 1st he has 10 team trade list, so he can block almost every possible trade options. And because he has NMC, they can't even put him on waivers.

If you're that desperate to move him ship him 50% retained to tampa or florida or somewhere else sunny he'd want to be, or even pay someone else to retain on him.

I'd rather pay a 1st than eat 9 mill in dead cap if that's what it takes (he realistically stays on the team)

NJD: gets FC
Team B: retains 50%, gets 1st from NJD (you can cut out team B if you want to keep the first)
Tampa: gets 3 mill x 2 palat for free.

NJD saves the final 2 years of his buyout cost.

Or, for example another way to potentially get creative with it.

Send him back to his old GM in yzerman in det if they aren't on his NTC, take on Copp (similarly bad contract), either keep copp, or use his lesser NTC to dump him somewhere

Gallagher.

He does ok for a few games and then disappears for a month.

He still tries, but his body is done.

His cap hit isn't an issue for the team at this point, but his taking up a roster spot is the issue.

I can see them NOT buying him out, but it should be a consideration.

I honestly don't think that woulb be a good idea this year. They can wait a little bit or even the end of the contract. They're not in a rush

Neither one is getting bought out. We still have a whole year to decide on a Cozens buy out and he's CERTAINLY not getting bought out this year.

Samuelsson will be making the going rate for a 3rd pairing D real real soon, and he still has the ceiling of a defense-first #4D.

What is the ask of Toronto in a Cozens trade if you're talking about buy outs? I don't get it but...

Cowan, Kampf, FLA 2nd 2025 ? Our top prospect, a 4C ($ equalizer) and a top 2 rounds pick...or is the ask a lot more?

I am not clear on his value so apologies if the above offer isn't close, he apparently has interest league wide and then his name comes up in a buy out thread.

It's cheaper to bury him in the AHL for 2 season out of 3 then buy him out.
Doesn't make sense to buy him out for only 1 season of saving, and 5 of more dead cap.
Agree from a paper perspective

But from a practical standpoint they likely need to buy him out. Murashov and Gauthier not being able to consistently play AHL games is an issue.
