I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils buyout Ondrej Palat's contract. He has been poor this season.

It'll be interesting with the cap going up if you don't see some teams just opting to bury contracts or retain cap.

Like, for Detroit, the obvious option is Justin Holl. If they buy him out they eat a $1.13M x 2 cap hit. If they bury him they eat $2.25M x 1. More cap on the burial, but one less year. They have $26M in cap space next year and will honestly have a very hard time spending nearly that much if they re-sign AlJo/Berggren/Soderblom and run Cossa as Talbot's backup.

$1m per year is atleast dirt cheap in terms of a buyout. The contract itself was a question mark from the start though.

Habs aren’t going to buy out a lifer like Gally, they don’t need the space and he still has utility. They will let the Laine experiment run to expiry hoping he finds his game.

There would still be teams interested in Palat I think, it just might need a sweetner. $6m a year is a lot but the actual dollar amount is lower and he goes from NMC to M-NTC next summer.

A team like Chicago could do with a player like him. In fact even a team like Buffalo could do with a cup-winning vet for a mentality change.

Wouldn't someone take Cozens for future considerations at least? Buyout is $1,183,333 for 10 years so it's not horrendous.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Barclay Goodrow, perhaps - both are clearly done and their roster spots are probably better spent on people with a future. With the increasing cap, their buyout cap hits will not be significant. Just need to make sure the Sharks can reach the cap floor.

Jarry probably bought out. No one is going to pick up Jarry's term as a goalie even at 50% retained. There is no bottom 6/third pair to banish a goalie to. Graves either they stomach his cap hit on the third pair, especially if he shows well down the stretch, or retain 50%. He's a lot more palatable at 2.25M.

I'd take a flier on Cozens for a bag of pucks on the Pens.

Neither one is getting bought out. We still have a whole year to decide on a Cozens buy out and he's CERTAINLY not getting bought out this year.

Samuelsson will be making the going rate for a 3rd pairing D real real soon, and he still has the ceiling of a defense-first #4D.
