are the 07s actually that good?

they now have zero flexibility with 1st round packages, so can’t bring in any more other teams 1st rounders

All four of them are starting to make an impact. All I can say is what choice do they have but to build around those four ‘07s? They’ll be looking at strong 07s, 08s and their ‘09 1st. They have no choice. The moves they make will support that cohort.

that’s fair, I’d say addy is not but I get the other two are. I guess I just don’t see any franchise players in the 07s is all despite all the hype about the trades last year

Addy has struggled a bit with injury this year but he is looking good right now. HE just hasn’t translated it into points yet. But he is a big body presence and he is very noticeable on the ice or at least he was yesterday. I think he will start to emerge. You can see both Taylor and
Young really starting to push now. I think they will both have solid 2nd half’s.

Whether Addy will be able to turn into a point producer is not certain yet but I think he will and the bigger body will start to translate as he matures more.

The real issue for the Petes is the rest of their ‘07 draft outside of those four guys is basically devoid of any talent. But, that is what happens when you don’t have a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

I will admit Addy did have a strong game yesterday, but it is safe to say that between Cameron, Young, Taylor, Addy, it has been Nico Addy who has looked the least impactful all season. He has easily been the biggest disappointment and seems steps behind across the board, especially for being a 1st rounder. I would be totally satisfied if the Petes found a way to move Addy at the deadline, which as @OHL4Life just referenced, the Petes are at/close to their max 1st round package capacity so it would create more flexibility anyways.

No franchise type guys from the 07 group but probably at least 3 guys who will be in the league as really good OA’s. Fitzgerald is the franchise guy going forward

I am not sure how accurate that education package situation is. They didn’t draft those players and when you trade for a player that has a package, I am reasonably certain the package allotment travels with the player. It would mean that OS, Saginaw, and Sudbury all have one less package and the Petes would have three extra. My understanding is that can be excluded from the trade but it often is not excluded. It usually stays with the player when moved. I am pretty sure the package allotment only applies to your own draft picks.

Addy is a bigger player. It will take him a bit longer to push through. That is typical. It may be a bit concerning it is taking a little longer but he has a good foundation. It really comes down to how long it will take him to actually score goals. Some bigger players don’t do it until 18-19. But, regardless, he will be a presence along the boards and he can clearly skate well for a bigger kid.

And, I don’t see more than half of the ‘07 1st round cohort being franchise players. After the first five picks, you have Ivankovic, O’Brien, Reid, and Romano? Some good players after that but nothing that is considered Franchise or elite, at least not yet. We will see how they come out next year in their important 18 year old season.

Discussion for its own thread maybe. But with this new CHL/NCAA agreement, can the gold package now go the way of the dodo bird?

If these players can play in the CHL and commit to NCAA schools, gold packages are redundant, no? Especially for 1st rounders who’d be good enough to qualify for full rides if they eventually found themselves in the NCAA after their junior eligibility is up.

Seems to me rule changes are in order.

I don't believe this is the case. Packages travel with the player and count against a team's allotment when they trade for that player unless explicitly excluded from the trade.

They can only go NCAA if they are on scholarship. The Education packages are designed for players to use without needing to also play hockey while using them.

The basic package only includes tuition. There isn’t really a max value. So, a player on a regular scholarship could go to a trades school and get their cost of tuition covered but not room and board etc, et the cost of tuition is half that of a psychology degree. From my perspective, if a kid like Chris Barlas wants to go to trades school and has a Gold Package, it has value to him because he can get the additional expenses covered that wouldn’t be covered otherwise.

That’s my point. So, if a team has an allotment of seven, when they trade a player that has a package, the package goes with the player meaning that team gets the advantage of carrying an extra Gold Package. Teams can trade the obligation to pay the tuition but they can’t trade a Gold Package player and then get that extra Gold PAckage to use on another player they draft.

It travels with the player. Only time it wouldn’t would be if it’s negotiated and that only happens for 19 year olds

they are capped at 7, if you trade for a player with a gold package, you don’t get to carry 8, you only get 7. It’s no different then a Salary cap.

Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated.

The one thing we were talking about a while back was whether the Gold Package allotment is freed up once the payer sings their NHL Contract. We know the Scholarship is nul and void but what about the Gold Package allotment? If a team has handed out 7 packages and then one of those seven signs their NHL deal, does that team now have that Gold Package allotment to add a player that has one? Or do they need to wait until the end of the season?

Unfortunately the 07's don't look like much right now. Addy has about one strong shift a game and then seems to vanish. Young had a hot streak a few weeks ago but hasn't continued with it. Taylor is...something. Has the cockiness and swagger of a 50 goal scorer but can't back it up. Also won't go anywhere near contact. And likes to linger on the ice longer than he should. I have no faith in Wilson being able to develop skilled players. It goes against his style.

Yes, an nhl contract nullifies the gold package and opens up a slot.
