Butterfly Effect: The Full Impact of the Eric Lindros Trade

I can’t even begin to imagine what it would look like, but I’d love to see it!

One thing that’s extremely hard to represent in text is how the different branches of the trade fold back on themselves. By way of example, the Saad trade connects to the Lindros trade through 3 or 4 different players. So the tree branches out, then funnels back in again. It’s crazy how all these relationships weave together across 31 different teams.

So what you're saying is that the trade tree looks like the family tree of European royalty? :sarcasm:

This is easily the coolest and most interesting thing I've ever seen on here in my near 12 years of being on these boards.

Well done, I'm at work on my break right now, otherwise I'd go into a full length discussion with you in terms of what impact it had on the Rangers side of it, which is a very interesting discussion in it's own.

My favorite part of this is that to further the impact of winning of the Nordique/Avalanche franchise, Roy, Bourque, and Blake were all in trades connected in this tree

Something I've been wanting to do with this project is to figure out exactly what current NHL players are on their rosters because of this trade.

Bear in mind, it can be a little tricky because an active player could be in this tree, but no longer be connected. For example, someone who was drafted into the Lindros tree, but ended up with his current team as a UFA, would not count. Also, it’s really tough to figure out whether teams still have the rights to players they’ve drafted but haven’t signed yet. I don’t know of any place you can find that out online.

Here are a couple who are relatively easy for me to figure out, due to newness or familiarity:

Las Vegas Golden Knights
David Clarkson (under contract, inactive)
Reilly Smith
Nick Suzuki
2018 6th round pick
2019 3rd round pick

Carolina Hurricanes
Julien Gauthier
Brock McGinn
Roland McKeown
Jordan Staal

I've been curious to see if any recent trades begin to rival this. I started with one close to my team (the Kovalchuk trade) and have found that it's got a decent start...notable trades tied to it so far include B. Schenn to STL, Shattenkirk to WSH, Byfuglien to ATL/WPG, Saad to CBJ/CHI, Panarin to CBJ, Ladd to CHI, Duclair to CHI

It's fun throwing this together. Can't imagine the work involved in the Lindros deal. Very impressive!

Eliteprospects has some great tools, like this one Eliteprospects.com - Dallas Stars Depth Chart
shows players in the system and are they signed or unsigned.
Also many team have sections on their own website (www.nhl.com/TEAMNAME) on the top bar a tab called either Team or Roster and the dropdown has "in the system" or "prospects" or similar section.

(edit: grammar)

The work to complete that must be insane. Easily the biggest deal of a few generations in the NHL.

I think the biggest contribution Eric Lindros made to hockey is introducing second opinions. Eric ultimately exposed a weakness in team medical staff, whose ultimate goal are trying to get injured players return to action ASAP, without full recovery.

It seems to me that all of this effort should be rewarded somehow! I really hope your career/job is related somehow someway. To see names like Loui Eriksson, Lecavalier, Rick Nash, and 5 different people named Roy connected to it after all these years is so surreal.

At this point, shouldn't we just consider this as perpetual? My biggest curiosity is, at what size in a trade will in effect cause perpetual ripples? Are there any other trades that have had a perpetual ripple? The Toronto/Boston Kessel trade, Chris Pronger traders?

Parshin seems weird to me. Have the Avs really kept the rights to a 2004 draft pick while he played his whole career in Russia?

Edit: So, uh, apparently this is a weird, developing situation. Can an Avs fan confirm that as of last week, he finally fell off the roster after almost 14 years?

Can confirm. The legendary NHL career of Denis Parshin has finally come to a conclusion
