As an Oilers fan you should know that things can always get worse. Always.

As bad as things are there are some good pieces in Buffalo and trading away any of the good players they do have, especially if they do it right now, absolutely would move the organization backwards. They've already learned this lesson the hard way a few times recently.
Being an oilers fan has nothing to do with it.

Buffalo is a joke of franchise that has never won anything and hasn’t been relevant since 1999. Has a league leading 13 year playoff drought, soon to be 14. There is nowhere else for them to fall.

I am not saying trade the good pieces, you trade the passengers, the players that dont give 100% every night. You trade the chaff to show that losing is unacceptable. Buffalo has a losers mentality from the owner on down and his comments today show that. They will never flip that switch keeping the status quo.

the owner clearly wants the team to suck. The question is why? What is he getting out of having a non competitive, totally irrelevant team. What is his end game here.
You are underestimating the owner's ego here. Highly successful guy in the business world who is used to everything going his way
In the NFL, The Raiders & Cowboys are in the exact same boat. IIRC the Redskins were in the same position with Dan Snyder.
Billionaire owners that put yes men in place who tell them what they want to hear.

It’s like when a serious young employee runs into the CEO and gets asked how the project is coming. The young employee tries to delicately explain that things are very behind because their boss and their boss’s boss are raving morons, and have spent the past month trying to figure out if 2+2 can equal 5. The CEO, shocked, offers to help. Now there are three people on the 2+2=5 concern.

Seriously, I can’t imagine that’s what the players actually wanted/expected to hear, and that’s pretty much a blank ticket to don’t-do-shitsville. Why, as a player, should I give it my all and perform well, when organizationally we’ve said it’s the same either way? Goddammit I hate Terry so much.

These are the players the Sabres have drafted in round 1 since they last made the playoffs:

2012 - Grigorenko (12), Girgensons (14)
2013 - Ristolainen (8), Zadorov (16)
2014 - Reinhart (2)
2015 - Eichel (2)
2016 - Nylander (8)
2017 - Mittlestadt (8)
2018 - Dahlin (1)
2019 - Cozens (7), Johnson (31)
2020 - Quinn (8)
2021 - Power (1), Rosen (14)
2022 - Savoie (9), Ostlund (14), Kulich (28)
2023 - Benson (13)
2024 - Helenius (14)

I see a 1C, 1W, 1D, and a good 2nd pair D among others. That is on paper a good core to build a team around. For whatever reason the team just cant.
The 1 overall pick this summer is that a good first C ? Or how good is this summer draft class ?

Ironically, he's not making the wrong decision here. When the Sabres do play a full 60, they are a scoring machine that is tough to play against. Yes they have 0 consistency in doing so, but they are still a young team.
The spankings will continue until they learn to clean their room daily. Sometimes, tough love is necessary. As for the playoffs, don't expect it and you won't be disappointed? Just a thought.
Sure, every team looks good in the games they play well in. The Sabres are 21st in the league in goals scored per game. There's absolutely nothing about them that says "scoring machine".

The Pegulas have absolutely zero incentive to spend a dime more in terms of actual operating expenses or their precious time on this asset.

If the Bills ever win, they'll be heroes forever regardless. The NHL has no ability to force the Sabres to improve. And sports is fundamentally about the unfairness of some peoples' financial power, athletic gifts, intelligence versus slobs like us who support the sports-industrial complex with our honest affection, hard-earned dough and presence for advertisers.
