and the same as the Blue Jackets...
Many pegged Dallas for big things this year, yet they are the same caliber team as the Sabres.
*they have achieved the same result as the Sabres thus far.

The Sabres have been outshot by 314 though 29 games - a, average of 11 shots per game. Dallas is "only" -19 in shots.

Buffalo has been on a nice run, but Dallas is still a better team.

They can't defend, and Lehtonen has not been very competent. On the other hand, Buffalo has literally been carried by their 1st line. Dallas is still a much better team than Buffalo.

At this time they have similar records.
I don't think many people would have predicted them being close in the standings

And ? The Stars are worse than expected but they were never contenders to begin with and no Stars fans expected them to become contenders this year anyway. We're not a team like Chicago suddenly out of playoff position. We're a mediocre team that's still mediocre thanks to bad coaching, terrible goaltending, the worst defense in the league and unfortunate injuries. Making the playoffs once in 6 years as the lowest seed does not make us a good team so making a post to point out that we suck seems redundant

While buffalo is largely smoke and mirrors...the things they have that can work...do.

They have one line that can produce (ennis-Girgensons-moulson) and since being put together...they have. Other than that they know they have no offensive ability so the game has been hit everyone and keep them to the outside...block whatever you can. And with myers playing so well and ristolainen/zadorov pair doing so well...they've basically eliminated breakaways and odd man rushes are much fewer. Still...the save percentage will prove unsustainable eventually regardless of how hard they work to limit the quality of the shots...the quantity will do them in more. That said...enroth is on a massive hot streak right now. Dude is on fire.

Basically they are working really hard to really overachieve...as strange as that sounds for a team in 4th last place. But it is what it is. Work hard, keep your head up, and don't get down when something goes wrong. It can lead to wins even in this league. I think there is something to them not caring when they get scored on. They are never playing tight...they know they aren't good...and I think it's actually helping them play loose and keep coming in spite of it.

Same points as the Blue Jackets? Ok, and how many injuries have they had? How many games have their players missed?

Weak thread.

Florida is as good as Boston then? You could come up with dozens of these. The real question is what's Buffalo going to do, are they going to keep themselves out of the top two picks?

it is pretty amazing considering everyone had them as locks to be a western powerhouse. I guess that's what parity does.

I'd say popular opinion was somewhere around "bubble team" or worse.

Just in their division Minnesota was probably rated higher for people, on top of Chicago and St Louis. Plus Colorado for those who did not yet believe in Corsi.

They're going to continue to foster an atmosphere of hard work and good attitude for their young players who are there (Girgensons, Ristolainen, Zadorov, Deslauriers) to develop in and so their next crop of young players (Reinhart, Armia, Grigorenko, Pysyk, McCabe) come into a good environment and let the draft chips fall where they may. If you chase failure...you'll probably find it.

i certainly expected dallas to be at the very least a playoff contender, if not top 3 or 4 in their division after the spezza move

Personally I am very surprised at how poorly the Stars have done so far this season. I do expect them to play better and suspect they may in fact do so in the new year.

I also really like what both the Sabres and the Panthers have done lately. I think Florida will continue to improve and be close to a playoff spot, if not in the playoffs by the end of the season.

I have no idea where Buffalo will end up, but it's great seeing them working hard and improving.

A declining Spezza was enough to make you overlook the worst defense in the league?

Everybody knew what Dallas's problem was last year. Getting Spezza and Hemsky wasn't going to fix it.

There's another team in that division, absolutely no one predicted Winnipeg would be 11 points up on Dallas come Christmas time.

Winnipeg was probably thought of as being in the same bubble-group as Dallas. They're probably only a bit above where people would have expected.

Nashville on the other hand...

Winnipeg was placed squarely at the bottom by every prediction I saw on tsn, nhl.com etc.

But yeah Nashville has an unreal defence and goaltending and this Forsberg kid who would have known

You are obviously not looking at the games they are playing. Buffalo is forcing the opponents to take lousy shots, which is why Enroth has so good save% aswell, he takes a lot of easy shots. And the opponents can't convert them into enough goals since they are forced to make those lousy non-threatening-shots.

Buffalo scores more goals than their opponents, they convert their chances so obviously they get better scoring-opportunities than their opponents.

In short, Buffalo is winning because they score more goals than their opponents. Simple as that, since that is the foundation of the game. No matter what statistics is saying, Buffalo is winning games.
