Listening to the Hot Stove on satellite radio (XM91) this morning they were questioning Buffalo's goaltending. Their consensus seemed to say that Buffalo's achilles heel this year might be their goaltending. Based on their great start they felt that Buffalo should be in the market for a seasoned goalie. Who's out there and at what cost?

I'm not convinced that anyone available right now would be an improvement. Hill or Brossoit could be available once the latter is healthy. Davidson could want to ship a goalie like Stalock out of Chicago since they're playing too well to tank (Soderblom is interesting, but I wouldn't trade him if I were them). As for teams that are already out of it, Reimer is always mentioned in San Jose.

I think Comrie and Anderson as a platoon are just as good as any of them, and any adds would be betting on potential fit. I think Gibson is past his best years personally, but he's always the name you hear. I think Buffalo would be better playing the year out and waiting to see what UPL, Levi, or Portillo can do. They're stacked in the pipeline.

The issue is having three of their top five defenseman out injured at the same time. They’re getting slightly above average tending based on Moneypuck’s goals saved above expected stats (2.1 for the starter Comrie and 0.2 for the backup Anderson). The biggest problem is having a tweener or two in their defense every night right now or their #6 pulling 20+ minutes (Bryson for those who aren’t familiar who I am talking about).

Reimer was my target in the off-season, given what the Sharks had before they traded Hill. I doubt he’d waive his NTC for Buffalo though.

Bob in a three way deal. Panthers retain 25% and the middle man 50%.

Some teams declined to take Patrick Marleau from the Leafs for a 1st round pick because it would have cost 3.83 million in real cash (along with his 6.25 mil dead cap hit for one season).

After this season, Bobrovsky has three years remaining at 22.5 million. I'm not sure there'd be many eager teams to eat 11.25 million in real money plus have a 5 mil dead cap for three seasons.

As a Devils fan, we've learned the hard way that it's not great to be a buyer for a goalie this early in the season. In recent years, we had to settle on guys like Louis Domingue and Jon Gillies since nobody's really looking to trade a goalie already.

In a different thread, I was reminded of the 1999-00 Florida Panthers. They had acquired Trevor Kidd in the offseason and he was on fire in the first couple months with the Panthers. Florida decided that they could shed some payroll and traded former starter Sean Burke. Then a few weeks later, Kidd sustained a long term shoulder injury and Florida scrambled for a goalie and had to pay a big price to get Mike Vernon (San Jose had Evgeni Nabokov ready as a replacement).

Not many teams are ready to punt on the season and have two quality goalies plus a #3 they'd trust to call up as a replacement. I'd imagine San Jose will dangle James Reimer at some point.

The reality is they are a young team who play a wide open offensive game which leaves them vulnerable to giving up dangerous chances. Add in the loss of 3 of your top dmen and it compounds things.

Truth is our goalies haven't really cost us any games yet this season.

While I definitely want upgrades there..now is not the time to do it

they are f***ing morons

their normal defense would be
Samuelson -Dahlin
Power-Lyubushkin
Bryson-Jokiharj

Bold are on out with injury
Lyubushkin is still on the 23 man roster, the other two on IR

Check back when they are healthly.

The f***ing morons think Buffalo's goalies are any good.

Buffalo has UPL in Rochester who likely gets called up and plays a few times this year if Comrie or Anderson is a little banged up or ill. UPL will be on the Sabres next year. he is in the final year of waiver exemption.

In rochester they have Malcom Subban and a goalie on a Rochester only contract they could transfer to Buffalo if necessary. AHL team wouldnt be impacted if UPL was called up for an extended period.

they have two college goalies they could sign post NCAAs in Portillo (Michigan) and Levi( Northeastern)

they ARE NOT in the market for a goalie

Bob can block any trade
Buffalo is not in the market for a long term goalie.

That could change if they cant sign either Levi or Portillo.

Portillo can go the UFA post college route after June 1 if he declares pro. He has 1 yr eligibility left with him for 23/24 season but then it reverts to August 15 deadline.,

Levi has a similar route in 2024 where he can declare pro and become pro for after June 1 2024 or 30 days. If he stays for 4 college years then its August 15 deadline in 2025.

Broissoit is healing from his surgery and due back in a week or so. With the VGK being pretty happy with Thompson and Hill, they might let Broissoit go.

Anderson and Comrie are making all of the saves that they should, and Comrie flat-out stole 2 points against Edmonton.

The problem is, as has been stated earlier, we're down 50% of our normal top 6....a 19 year old is pulling 20-25 minutes and our #6 is pulling the same. As a result, we're surrendering a TON of high danger chances and a TON of odd-man rushes.

Goaltending may not be a strength of ours, but it is most certainly not a weakness. I'm not sure how much better our record would be even if we had a Vezina-caliber guy starting for us right now -- we're giving up THAT many impossible-to-save chances.

Let's let the defense get healthy and see what happens.

But why? Goalies have not been a problem, we have a lot of injuries in defense and sometimes our forwards do not work properly in defense. There are many moments where you can not blame the goalie for the missed puck. At the moment I'm fine with Comrie, Anderson and UPL. The top 4 RD's are who we need, but I guess Adams will wait until TDL or summer with this one.

Correct - for those who watch them and look at the important analytics, it’s not the goalies that are the issue. Let’s see how they look once their 3 injured top 5 d come back. Goalies are performing above goals expected even now

I highly suggest they take advantage of the Brossoit situation and steal him for the lowlow price of a 3rd

I wanted Adams to trade for Vanecek and Marino in the summer, but the Devils made these great moves.

Reimer is not an upgrade to Comrie or Andy to this point.

I think their big issue is having to play Kale Clague, Casey Fitzgerald, and Lawrence Pilut the last few games.
Don't speak ill of Pilut, he's been great.

It's Clague, Fitz and Bryson getting caved in out there...
