Proposal: - Buf/TB Cirelli for Peterka | Page 4 | HFBoards - NHL Message Board and Forum for National Hockey League

Proposal: Buf/TB Cirelli for Peterka

He turns 27 ( not mid 20s) before start of the season and it goes on forever.

I'd rather acquire someone like danuult on a much shorter contract
You live in an interesting world if 26 is not mid-20s, and lasting until 32 is not “forever”

He’s in the exact same age window as Dahlin Thompson and Tuch, the Sabres 3 best players and his big game experience is exactly what the Sabres lack.

$6m salary is going to be chump change for a top 6 player under the rising cap

He is not top 6C. He does not produce on offense.

First of all, “top 6 centre” is not defined by offence, it’s defined by ability to effectively play with and against top players and win those matchups.

Secondly, offensively Cirelli fits just under the bar for top 40 in points among centres this year.

If you don’t think he’s among the 64 best centres in the game that’s your call, but I doubt many hockey people would agree.

This was very obviously a career year for him offensively. He’s going to go right back to scoring ~40 points once he’s not riding shotgun to a 90+ point play-driving winger.

Cirelli is an excellent defensive player, but let’s not pretend he’s anything other than mediocre at best on the offensive side of the puck.

I'm a Habs fan and I wouldn't do it from a TB perspective.

Cirelli is a center and a good one. He's very solid defensively and has proved he can play on a line with elite offensive players.

Centers of his caliber are actually scarce in the NHL. Their value outweighs the value of wingers because of that.

Cirelli's 82 game average is 20g/27a according to Hockey-reference.com. Not top offensive 2C production, but more than adequate.

Or maybe for the first time in four years he's been able to play with someone who isn't a black hole on 5v5 offense(Stamkos)?

He doesn't drive play, absolutely true, but he is a hell of a complimentary forward when used correctly. He'd hardly be the only 2C in the league not relied on primarily for their offense, and if you factor out PP points he significantly moves up the rankings.

Also, since you mention 90+ point Hagel carrying him. Hagel spent most of 2023 with Kucherov, but he played significantly better this year(5th in ESP) playing with Cirelli.

What you describr is not an offense play driver. Ideally you want centers who drive offense.

This past year is a statistical outlier e prior seasons hes 45p/82g.

You also need to factor in salary in looking at ROI

Cirelli had a career year. It was definitely a good one but he's been a 40 point player his whole career. He'll be 28 in July. Is he a valuable player? Absolutely but Peterka at 23, is just scratching the surface of his potential. Buffalo would be crazy to let him go. I like Cirelli but would not give up Peterka for him.

I don't think that way.

In fact, I think Sabres need precisely more of defense minded players like Cirelli than anything else.

They need players that put the team's success first and are ready to do the dirty/strenuous work for their team to win.

The Sabres look like a team full of talented players that look at their stats sheet first... so they don't need "point producing guy" more, they need heart and soul players more.

Cirelli is certainly a player that fits that bill... plus he has 2 rings on his fingers...
