Proposal: Buf/TB Cirelli for Peterka

Trading Paul is unlikely to net us value or cap space to get anyone good. I just think Cirelli is either expendable or not quite established enough of a 2C with plenty of opportunities to do so. His only good offensive year coincided with Hagel putting up 90. I don’t think it’s that crazy to say Paul could score like 5 more goals and double his assist totals playing more minutes and with Hagel.
And neither does this trade. In fact, Tampa loses cap space here after paying JJP some overpriced number no doubt, and then there is no room for any real 2C. You act as though Cirelli isn't a 2C, which he is, but Nick Paul is suddenly going to do just fine in the role...The trade makes absolutely no logical sense for Tampa, as Peterka is another luxury, not any need that is going to make the team better if losing Cirelli is the cost. If JBB really wants to move Cirelli in this kind of trade to actually improve the team moving forward/looking to the future, he should be looking at a dman that makes less than Cirelli and that can help a unit that is facing some key players getting up there in age. This would also actually provide them with some additional space as well to maybe add someone who could somewhat fill in at 2C. Cirelli for Peterka is bad in many different ways, and it doesn't help the team in any area they need it.

Sabres acquired McLeod as a 3C so why acquire Cirelli?

Kulich played well as a rookie in a top y role and thry have some centers in ptodprct pool.

Cirelli has umpteen yrs left.

Buffalo isnt acquiring him

Tampa already has plenty of soft perimeter streaky undersized wingers. Don't need another soft player who can and probably will get cold in the playoffs (if he ever gets traded).

Tampa could find plenty of middle six soft wingers on the market for cheaper and not required a stupid amount of salary cap for lots of years for basically one good season.

Standing out in buffalo is great and all, but who needs a soft winger, who wants more money, on a team that's already pretty soft?

I doubt Kulich gets traded to Tampa, and I doubt Buffalo gets what they think they will.

Buffalo is not trading Kulich

I think the “soft” thing is overplayed. Never really once thought that about Peterka when I’ve seen him play. Sabres fans can correct me if I’m wrong but I see JJ as a pretty relentless puck pursuer/hound on the walls.

I think everyone against this trade for TB is overlooking the fact that you could get Peterka and trade Bjorkstrand for a center like perhaps a Marchessault (I’m sure there are others, but he came to mind first) and still be fine cap wise unless Peterka really wants more than 7 or 8 million a year on a good team like TB, which would make the trade unpalatable anyway. Not saying this is the route, but if JBB swings a Cirelli for Peterka deal it wouldn’t be the end of the offseason.

Plus, you can go 10% over the cap in the summer and have the rest of the off-season to figure it out. So I dunno. If you asked us this time last year if you wanted McDonagh for a third while we’re trying to pay Stamkos and already have Hedman + Sergachev then you’d have said no. But the team got better after that move. I think looking at a deal like this in a vacuum is shortsighted.

Again. What did you name here that Tampa doesn't have already in regards to Forwards? Kulich brings nothing new to the roster, aside from his age and a potential bloated contract. I'm not saying Kulich isn't good. I'm just saying he's not needed on a team that already scores at a high clip. Keep trying to find the same players, who do the same thing, and lose in the playoffs and then scratch your heads on why it didn't work.

I'm on the fence about trading Cirelli, but if comes down to trading him, it would be better to trade him from a youngish top 4 defenseman, because as it stands McDonagh is retiring after this last year on his contract, and Hedman is only getting older.

Fair enough. I’d think a Cirelli for Rasmus Andersson type deal might be a decent play, but not sure. It’ll be funny when our only offseason moves are Howard for a 2nd, Goncalves 2x$2, and Jeannot for a $1x1 😂

Cirelli finally had a big year last year but did nothing in the playoffs. He is a perfect 3c but overpaid for a 2c.
I’m as critical of Cirelli as anyone but he had a separated shoulder/torn AC joint or something. He couldn’t even practice. Then lost his primary linemate for the rest of the series after game 1 lol

Peterka has been a left wing for most of his Sabres career: opposite Tuch, Thompson Quinn

The idea Buffalo doesn’t need a defensively adept centre because of McLeod is laughable. Like you can’t use 2 of them? Their biggest need up front is guys who can defend and Cirelli is among the best at that.

3C is also laughable. The guy made team Canada.

But the best part of this for the Sabres is a top 6 player in his mid-20s with term for $6m

He turns 27 ( not mid 20s) before start of the season and it goes on forever.

I'd rather acquire someone like danuult on a much shorter contract

Lol he's not in his mind twenties. He's 27 when the season starts! I'd much rather get a guy who's 5 years older, signed about the same money, who doesn't improve with our team and keeps us missing the playoffs for another few more years!

Cirelli has proved himself for YEARS in the playoffs. His playoffs performance is why he got that contract.

Wrong guy to criticize about playoff performance.
