At the time, he had 3 RFA years remaining. Now, he has none.
A fair point, but the fact is he was actually a better player when he was traded then when he had the 3 RFA years, so I still don't see how missing those 2 extra RFA years tanked his value that much. As we are seeing first hand, teams are having no problem paying UFAs their money even in a flat cap era.

Team control has real value a) due to the flexibility it offers in terms of contract options (bridge vs. long-term) and the resulting ability to construct/plan your roster, as well as b) the fact that the player can't just bolt for greener pastures (which is especially important to a team like EDM). Also of note, he didn't have arb rights at the time.

A lot of people thought he was going to get more than that, if he signs for 5M this makes the trade look even worse. Not even 1.5M gap between him and Goodrow, absolute yikes. Worse than Brassard for Zibanejad, by a lot.

Until Buch continues to regress back to his normal self like he did in the 2nd half.

Still doesn't make this a good return, but lets quit the hyperbole.

How did you come to the conclusion that he regressed in the second half?

His production slowed a bit over his last 23 games played and his play driving metrics took a nose dive. @Machinehead can provide more details here. A relatively empty 3 point performance during the season finale helped him a bit here too, he was terrible in that game.

The eye test would confirm this though. He wasn't the only one, but he sucked down the stretch.

Great contract and deal for St. Louis, I'm still not understanding this trade, we should have gotten a 1 or center prospect in return. Maybe we can use the 2nd round pick to move up next year to get a guy we want and or hope Sammy Blais is an elite 4th liner.

Drury is trying to build a NHL team puzzle but he needs to manage his assets the same way.

Well, one thing to the people who preach patience about young players and point to guys like Buch and Zib ... this is why you want your players to breakout at 21 and not 26. You get more years of prime production and more years of control.
