There are 3 things I'd do to start to change this team :

1) Get rid of Wheeler, it's not that he's bad, as he's pretty decent still for a 35 year old guy, but he's not worth $ 8 mil, maybe around $ 3.8.

2) Get rid of Paul Stastny, time to go with up and coming young talent.

3) Hire a good head coach, and new assistants, then start this rebuild, with no delays.

This is only where I'd start, but I'd have to think about many other changes.
How does one go about ‘getting rid of Wheeler’?
We would have to pay major assets for that to happen as not many teams that could afford the cap hit would want him. Why not just ride out his contract, reduce his playing time, and move him down the lineup a little?

I was going to post this as it's own thread, but, forget it. I'll just post here.

Where did this all go wrong?

The f***ing hockey news cover about meeting your 2019 Cup champions thing seems like a distant memory now. It really pisses me off to see the Leafs continue to be in their window, and our window slammed shut after 1 playoff where we won 2 series. That's it. That was our f***ing window. We got to enjoy a run to the west final.

I think your likely very right here, as it would be hugely expensive to get rid of him, and the Jets probably don't want the expense of buying him out. If he will be ok with being moved down in the lineup, and will take that with a good attitude, I can see that working out. He's still an effective playmaker, but the Jets got in way to deep on his contract, so this likely what will happen. I think they can live with this, and he can still be an effective 2nd or 3rd line player. They really don't have a choice here.

Stanley is f***ing awful. How he dressed over Heinola is baffling. He isn't even strong on the puck anymore. He's timid, gets outmuscled and makes terrible reads and plays.

I'm done watching for this year. See y'all in the fall. Go Blue Jays! Go Bombers! Go Team Canada!
Stanley has been horrible this year and despite that he still leads Heinola in CF%, FF%, SCF%, GF% and xGF%…..I expect Heinola to be much better than Stanley but he hasn’t been good this year.

This team is a joke. Not only does the entire coaching staff need to go.
There needs to be a roster retool.
You either need to trade Scheifele or convince wheeler to accept a trade. One of those two need to go at a minimum.

I am so over this team and the nhl at this point.

Bring on mlb opening day.

Proof?

HockeyReference has Stanley at 42.2 CF% and Heinola at 49.2%. Where are you getting these stats from?

Doesn't matter, Heinola has barely played this season and Stanley has played way too much. Anyone can see Heinola is a way better hockey player than Stanley except for our coaches. Oooo look Stanley is big he must be good:help: .

I've been hard on Scheifele lately so I feel the need to be fair and say Dubois went full All Star game last night. He skated one direction and was about as lazy as it gets on defense. Terrible game.

That must mean that Chevy is fixing to extend him early (for no reason to do it early), to an expensive 4 year overpay deal.
92 games and 23 years old. Time for Jet fans to give up on him, send him out to sea and move to a younger less proven player to tie their flag to.

I have a hard time blaming Stanley for his season. He has decent numbers away from Schmidt. Schmidt has good numbers away from Stanley. They have awful numbers together. So what does Lowry keep doing?

You know what pairing has looked really good in limited minutes together? Heinola and Schmidt. Lowry is amazingly dumb.

It's very worrisome that Stanley at 23 hasn't shown to be able to handle minutes away from a sheltered bottom pairing, but Lowry seems intent on sinking him at this point.
