Brunner

It's pretty simple, Brunner can skate. So even if he doesn't turn into be some star player he'll always have an ability that Leino never had. Plus, Leino felt entitled, he always acted like the team owed him something. It's why he failed here and now in Buffalo.

Amazing how people know how players "feel."

I don't think it's clear what Brunner will be. To be honest, I think his skating was way overrated.
Leino will need a top 6 role and some PP time to produce.

Is he good enough for that? On some teams, for sure. But maybe not on others.

Without top 6/pp minutes, he's going to post crappy numbers.

I definitely disagree with your view. Take Diaz, 26, he is a D with the Habs.

Minor problem with your example: Diaz gets 3 minutes more of PP time this season compared to last season. He plays a total of almost 5 minutes per game on the PP. Also, Andrei Markov is healthy and they play together on the PP.

With Brunner, I said he was basically not going to get much better. Diaz having a good start with much better circumstances doesn't refute that.

Yeah I personally disagree.

If Howard plays really well this year, and he's looked decent so far, he is going to want big bucks and a long term deal. I like Howard, but I don't think he is a $5 million caliber goalie. Now if he was willing to sign a shorter deal (3 years or so) I'd be willing to go that high...anything over that and I wouldn't pay him a dime over $4... Plus we have Mrazek on the rise, and while its only the AHL, he is looking impressive so far. I'd sign a cost-efficient stopgap until Mrazek is ready, rather than overpay to keep Howard as a UFA. I'd rather spread out that money to improve the rest of the roster.

This seems like the most effective way to run a team during the cap era; you draft well, develop your players, sign UFAs as needed, and when players get too expensive, let them go for cheaper home grown talent.

I would definitely want Filppula back if he was willing to take a hometown discount. But with Jarnkrok on the way, he may become obsolete... Although I do like him on the wing, like I said depends on cost.

Brunner looks good so far. Optimally you get him for a few years for less than $3 million per and sign him to an extension later if he's looking good still.

With the old CBA and cap hit... i could see

4 year deal for Howard 4.75 per
5 year deal for filppula 4.5 per
2 year deal for brunner 3.25 per

(i always hope we can sign them for less than these numbers)

New CBA no idea :P

I am comparing both in terms of adaptation to small ice. Diaz had a tough 1st NHL year. The 2nd year has been incomparably better.

Hence i expect Brunner to be seriously better next year. Not by the same magnitude than Diaz (that would be awesome ... 60pts ?) ... but better. (story will tell how much better)

The Nose has to put up an hell of a season to get a 3,25M deal.
Why do you think they will give him that kind of contract?

If he's OK I guess 1y @ 1,5M. But what do I know :)

If I simply extrapolate going forward our top scorers will be

D, Z, Flip and Brunner. I can see him getting 3.25... obviously it would be nice to get him for 2 or 2.5 but i could see it as high as 3.25.

Why is Brunner called "The Nose?"

It looks like Brunner has been told to shoot the puck, and that's about it.
Because he's not playing hockey out there. He's skating and shooting.

I disagree, I think he makes a lot of nice plays in the zone. The sad thing is that he is the only player on the team that actually looks to shoot, and that they are trying to use him as a trigger man on the power play when he is 5'11 175 lbs. My god we need somebody with a big body and a one timer on this team.

Meh, not everyone has to be a a Selke candidate. The Wings need a guy willing to pull the trigger on a shot occasionally, and Brunner's all we have for that (Franzen seems to have decided that he's a playmaker instead of a finisher). I'm glad he's shooting the puck and not passing up scoring chances to try to make the perfect play.

The answer is he's not. That's some joke name said by 1 or 2 ignorant people here at the forum. I've never heard it anywhere else.

Sproul is coming, he has no problem shooting and fits that exact discription. It would be nice if we had it now. The kids in the OHL are like in a Mighty Ducks movie when he winds up they want no part of that thing. Will be curious to see at the pro level how often it gets through, because he doesn't really have many guys willing to pay the price to block it right now. But if it gets through even half as often, he is going to be a huge weapon.

He's one of my favorite prospects but I'm going to assume it's going to be awhile still if Brendan Smith is the precedent. Right now the PP looks like the puck just gets passed around until it gets on the left side to Brunner's stick then he tries to take a shot. Or kronwall takes a completely non-threatening shot from the point with no rebound or no one screening the goalie. It's a joke.

If datsyuk had sproul parked with his stick cocked back I could just imagine the damage they'd do. :)

Hey, a nickname has to start somewhere, right? Not so much ignorant as observant, to be perfectly honest. We like him, ok? It's not like Q where we are trying to ride him for poor play.

Sorry ignorant was the wrong word. I just don't like nicknames based on his obviously larger nose, or anyone's physical traits for that matter (unless it's the Mule ). It'd be an ugly game day thread- unibrow to big head to knobby ankles for the goal!

i like brunner, i just think he needs to hit the net more

You try hitting the net with a nose that big.
Maybe he should try smelling the net instead of seeing it:laugh:

@ 4,5 5 years for filppula?

In that case one thing is sure, Filppula aint staying in detroit and they well yet again lose a great player.

Its the contract year where he will decide where he wil play for the rest of his career and at what price and role, so it will be difficult for wings to keep him.

He has a good understanding with Z. He's 5 games in, he just needs some more time to get his game together. I've liked what I've seen so far.

Unfortunately for Filppula his value goes down when he has to be shifted back to wing because the lineup isn't producing. Now he probably can sucker someone back into a big deal, but if he wants to use Grabo and Zajac as his guys on contract talks he better become more effective in the middle. Wingers don't get paid as much, unless they are super elite, so he is looking at 4.5 right now unless something changes or even though I like him I will root for him on somebody else and cover my eyes when that teams fanbase rails against his contract.

His 60 min game still leaves a lot to be desired. He left the Hawks player open in OT tonight.

Agree. That whole line has zero defence except for Z. Both Franzen and Brunner just seem to circle around semi-blocking lanes with their body. However the puck goes right through them... That line needs someone somewhat defensive minded. Flip would be a good choice to swap with Franzen tbh, but I guess that will only "move" the problem.
