Really think Sacco was in a no-win situation with Marchand. He played so poorly yesterday that I thought he would hurt the team in OT. Maybe Sacco thought the same. Or maybe he was just frustrated with his captain.
But if he plays him, the message is no matter how bad you're playing, you'll play in OT. Much like the message for the first unit on the PP, no matter how bad you are, we'll keep wheel you guys out there, even if its killing this team.
I'm on record as supporting the concept that stars should be benchable. No-one should be exempt if it's warranted. So in principle I have no problem with Marchand or anyone else being benched when earned. But the timing still just seemed wrong to me, for the reasons already stated. I get Marchand may have screwed up in OT, but he also may have won the game for us, and I'd argue the track record speaks in his favor on that front, even in his decline.
It's tough for coaches, for sure. Sometimes it can be no win as you said. And ultimately they need to be in charge. But in the context of the situation and the season, it just felt like the wrong call in this case.
