Went to see BU vs SHU tonight...

McAvoy and JFK with a point each.

JFK was really steady and sound. Was the lone forward on a couple of 5on3 PK's. First unit PP, first line center... He's their Bergeron.

McAvoy played a more controlled game. Still, he had the biggest hit in the game with an open ice bomb, and he had some dynamic moments where he stepped up and took charge in the Ozone, but much fewer of those moments than in the game I saw earlier.

OT: Fabbro looked very good as well. He's not as physically gifted as McAvoy but he plays a very smart and competitive game. He had a weird goal that looked like a harmless point shot, but it skipped in front of the goalie and changed direction. Still, made some nice plays carrying the puck around the Ozone and some nice passes.

I wonder if McAvoy has been told to play more a slightly more cautious, NHL-style game this year in preparation for the step up. If we plan to bring him in next year then it could make sense.

They also played Sacred Heart and I can see him playing more controlled

Watched BU (#8) vs Quinnipiac (#3) tonight...

JFK was the best player on the ice. 3 point night. First assist of the game was a beaut. BU must have had to kill four 5on3's and JFK and McAvoy were the first unit every time. 5on4 as well. McAvoy picked up an assist and had another solid game. Physical, and again some offensive bursts that were impressive but didn't materialize into goals/points other than the 1 assist.

I think it might be more that he's the shut down guy for them right now. He plays against top lines, he starts and finishes every PK. Maybe he feels like he can't roam too much in that role?

If McAvoy is in the Chara role, then it seems like Fabbro is in the Krug role in terms of Ozone starts and being on the ice with Bellows and Keller.

At first, I thought maybe only 2016 draftees were eligible, but Juulsen is a 2015.

WTF!!??

Our guy isn't even the most notable snub.

Jake Bean is arguably the best offensive defenseman in our league and a first round pick of Carolina.

Ethan Bear is the most accomplished offensive defenseman in our league, a former Team Canada Captain and a signed Edmonrton Oiler prospect.

Tanner Kaspick is a former Team Canada Captain, NHL draft pick and having a hell of a start to his year.

Zach Sawchenko is a double snub - a former Team Canada goalie passed up in the NHl draft and then passed over here.

Gabrielle is an obvious snub due to game 1 being in Prince George, he's played for Team Canada before, plus the fact that he is probably the best pure goal scorer in the WHL, and has more career goals than all but one (Tyler Soy) WJC eligible forward in our league. He's also 5th this season ppg amongst WHL forwards who are WJC eligible.

You can also make a case for Glenn Gawdin, Brad Morrison, Adam Musil, Liam Gregor and others.

The "snubs" are nothing new. There are at least "perceived snubs" every year. What's weird about this team is the bare minimum number of players selected. Typically the WHL selects about 18 forwards and 8 D and spread them over the 2 games, with some players playing only one game. However, this scaled down roster may be a trickle-down trend from Hockey Canada, which in recent years has trimmed the number of players invited to it's December WJC camp. In some instances (like last years goalie fiasco), they are foolish enough to gift roster spots without a camp.

Another disturbing Hockey Canada trend is nepotism. Though not new, it stands out when players like Cal Foote are selected over Bean & Bear and players like Ty Ronning are selected over Kaspick & Gabrielle. IMO opinion, of course.

Foote would a strong candidate for next years team, but he's not on par with Bear and Bean yet. Ronning as well, is a fine player, but he's clearly cut in line here, again, IMO.

Hockey Canada in general is trending the wrong way though. Needs an overhaul. Has been sliding ever since Jankowski was named head scout.

As far as the WHL Super Series roster, I wouldn't be surprised if they add a player or 2 or 3 yet. Not sure where our guy is on the alternates/add-on pecking order, but I wouldn't completely rule him out yet.

The Canada Russia series is open to any Canadian player and is the precursor to the World Junior Championship roster selection.

The roster for this series is selected by the host league, the two host teams and Hockey Canada.

Quick edit here as well, as I want to pick up on Dom's point.

It's worth noting that there are currently 8 Canadian WJC eligible forwards playing in the NHL. (Speers, McDavid, Marner, Barzal, Beauvillier, Strome, Crouse, Konecny) and 2 D (Chychryn, Chabot).

All but McDavid are strong candidates for loan to WJC. That definitely reduces the roster spots available to CHL players, which could be another very legitimate reason for smaller Super Series rosters this year. With only 5 fwd spots up for grabs, which are likely already penciled in. (think Dubois, Merkely, Jost, Gauthier, Mcleod)

Might be a little more room on D, but I would think Juulsen, Stephens, Guhle, Fabbro and possibly Jeremy Roy are your front runners. Stanley? Cholowski? Dermott? Possibly Lauzon is in the conversation if he is healthy at that time.

The Super Series looks more ceremonial this year than anything else. A fun event to fill with NHL names.

WHL Weekly Report

WHL Weekly Report

I'll segue off my Hockey Canada rant into my WHL weekly report. Another quiet week with just a pair of games. Gabrielle held his 1.5 ppg pace with 3 pretty critical points, a goal and a pair of helpers, which were also two game tie-ing points and one game winning points.

Broncos 5 - Cougars 4 (OT)

Following up on a point made in my last post. Was listening to Shawn Mullen (voice of the Swift Current Broncos) talk about Gabrielle this week. Paraphrasing Mullen, he says "there are only a handful of forwards playing Major Junior Hockey who can cleanly beat a veteran Major Junior goaltender from above the circles and Jesse Gabrielle is one of them. Because of this World Class shot, even when he's having a quiet game, he can turn the tide with a simple flick of his wrists."

That's exactly what happened in Tuesday's game. According to local radio, Gabrielle played with a stomache flu that apparently had him leaking from both ends. Wasn't his best game, but then he does this (2:31 of the video);

http://pgcougars.com/video/highlights-broncos-5-cougars-4-0t

Watch the slight drag on that shot that changes the angle ever so slightly and then he wires it top shelf through a space no bigger than a cheeseburger. That was a go-ahead goal at the time, though they would lose in OT.

Cougars 2 - Blades 1

Not only did Gabrielle set up both goals in this game, but he set them both up off takeaways.

The first goal he reads an intercepts an outlet pass (2:56 of the video), makes a move to the outside and then slips a beautiful pass to his team mate in the slot. That shot doesn't score but the rebound does.

The second (game winning) goal, begins off an offensive zone faceoff late in the 3rd period. You can see in the video (4:21) that he lines on RW. We keep refering to him as a LW on these boards, but aside from a few shifts here and there, he hasn't played LW for the last 2 seasons. Anyways, the Blades defender rims the puck hard along the wall. Gabrielle reads it, picks off the rim and makes a nice pass through traffic to feed his team mate cutting through the slot with a perfect tape-to-tape pass through traffic to the forehand.

No goals for Gabrielle in this one, but two beautiful setups off steals. You can also get a sense of his shot power from a post he hits at the .35 second mark of the video.

Any know why Senyshyn didn't play last night?

EDIT: Apparently he "suffered an undisclosed injury on Friday night against Flint, although he completed that game". You would think teams would make this info easier to find...I had to go digging on a local SSM news site to find this info at the very bottom of an article.

Buddy of mine watched Bjork this weekend play Penn State and said this guy looks like he could step right in next year- my bud is not a pro scout but he was a good player and sees a lot of hockey - especially college. Told me they need to get this guy signed

He's not a hyperbole guy like me and was pretty impressed- what he liked was the way he played. Sounds like an odd statement but he meant he knows how to play and seemed like a plus guy no matter what the skills you were focusing on

For chrissake, Jimmy Hayes is keeping his seat warm for him right now! Top 9 RW spot is begging to be taken by this kid. And then Gabrielle sounds like he might be right behind him.

Senyshyn suffer a pulmonary contusion(bruised lung) as a result of a hit. The coach said he could be back on the ice a soon as this week end.

Plenty of time for them.

I will say that Training Camp 2017 will be FUN.

He was back yesterday, no point, -2

"Coming back from an injury so we should give him a few weeks/years to get back up to speed before questioning the pick, but by that time we'll just blame the providence head coach for hampering his development since he'll only get 6 minutes a night even though he's a beast in the weight room and then some other reason and then.."

Or we could have had barzal 0 pts minus 2 or Connor minus 4, 2 pts. Not exactly guys that are burning the league up. I am sure they are good locker room guys though.
