IMO, Gagne and Leino are auditionning for a PK/4th line spot.

Their chances of getting a contract is likely linked to a couple things: How they do in camp, how the rookies are doing and is there a forward traded before game 1 (yeah, I'm talking about you Kelly...).

I'd honestly be more comfortable with a game ready Gagne or Leino on the 3rd line than I would be Paille or Kelly. Like many I'd prefer to go the young athletic route of Koko/Spooner/Pastrnak (two natural C's and a teenager), but if that fails it doesn't hurt to have options. Option's that have played the bulk of their professional careers as top-6 forwards and could have a glimmer of hope at playing that game alongside Soderberg.

Leino's NHL track record isn't that long. He has a one really good NHL season and one monster playoff performance (21 points in 19 games). That was a deep Philadelphia team. He's unlikely to ever get there again, but the ability is/was there. I'm curious to see how much the injuries have taken a toll on his movement. Same for Gagne with the age and time off.

The fact that we are talking about Leino and Gagne for the fourth line is really helping my argument for them being to soft as a team. People can say that Siedenberg and Bergeron aren't soft (they aren't, I'm just looking for more checkers/fighters) but I really don't know how you can make any type of argument for Gagne or Leino being tough in any way, shape or form.

Yeah. That one yeah, in NHL 2010, Lieno was wicked awesome, so let's get him on the rostah as soon as possible...

Lets not forget rookie camp starts 8 days before the vets even step on the ice with them. I would hope management and the coaching staff have some ideas about the youngsters by the 19th.

Not a bad thing itself, but since our coach is Claude Julien I'm worried a washed up veteran blocks a young talent who could grow to become better.

Might as well trade them all, a young home grown talent will never succeed on this roster.

15 pages on a few camp invites.....were a bored bunch

Caught the tail end of the announcement but some team has invited Kaberle to camp (heard it on fan590), sorry, missed the team who invited him

Most teams invite players, and usually those invites are about as exciting as the one`s Chia has invited

So Lieno is battling Caron for the 13th forward spot. At least he had one good season in the NHL. Seems like stiff competition for bench rider this year

Not sure, I feel like if Chia was willing to waive Caron, it would have already happened and/or he at least wouldn't have signed him.

When your only additions to the roster are camp invites, it's not surprising fans might be a little critical. No Iginla, no Thornton, goona need to move a good player to sign Krug and Smith....but hey, we invited Vile Leino to camp.....awesome.

It's the Devils training camp. He will attend along with Scott Gomez.

For people saying that the veterans are nothing more than depth, do you forget 2 years back? Chris Bourque and Jay Pandolfo? Ringing any bells on either of those stiffs? Those clowns were both terrible, yet they collectively split that role for the entire season. And really, after seeing how bad Pandolfo and CB were, are we really sure there weren't any better options in Providence? Seriously?

At the end of the day, it's not about inviting veteran players in on try outs. It's giving a veteran option for Julien to pick over the young guys that are trying to make the team. His track record says he clearly prefers the veteran player, so get ready for Gagne and Leino to be on this roster this year...

Chris Bourque was in the top 9 of a team that prides itself on scoring depth hoping to make a cup run on opening night. That will haunt my dreams for at least another decade I would imagine.

How are they supposed to add someone when they're already up against the cap?

You mean the way Lucic, Krejci, Marchand, Seguin, Smith, Boychuk, Krug, McQuaid and Miller were blocked under Julien? Because a coach and GM would deliberately hold back a younger, better, cheaper player, right?

Chris Bourque was like 25, didn't work out but hardly a remotely valid comparison. If anything it's in direct opposition of the ridiculous argument that the club won't give a young player a shot.

You can't be serious with this, right? Krug forced Julien's hand after getting into the lineup due to injury during the playoffs. If there's no injury, we don't see Krug. Seguin was sat in the playoffs and only got in because of, anyone? Anyone? Injury. Miller was brought up last year because of, any guesses? Oh yeah, injury. Hamilton was sat in the playoffs until what exactly? Oh yeah, an injury forced Julien's hand. Are you sensing a theme yet? I know I sure am...
