What bother me the most is the fact once again we have cap space, it's pretty clear we need more offensive power from the third line and Chiarelli refuses to look outside the box. Obvious it's nice giving opportunities to the rookies, but no one is doing what Ryder did. I'm not his biggest fan, but he would be, by far, a better option than Bourque.
“We’ve got a good team. It doesn’t mean we’re going to go out and get somebody because we have this cap space now, but sometimes in my experience, there are good deals that come early and you have to be in the ballgame and we’re in the ballgame now.”

Chiarelli quote
By outside of the box what would that mean??? I would argue that a Rich Peverley and a Chris Kelly were "outside the box". Usually that phrase is often used when someone does something that isn`t exactly anticipating or expects in whatever the situation is. Chia isn`t perfect, but he`s the best bloody GM this team has had in a looooooong time.
So, rather than fire out the accusations, how about putting some of your "outside the box" ideas, and sorry, Ryder isn`t outside the box, on the table for us to see. Chia`s move of Kessel for not one player that was currently on an NHL roster, in spite of knowing the Leafs wouldn`t be strong was as risky as I`ve seen from a GM.
Sent a guy who`s gonna get ya 30 yearly (albeit allergic to playing 3 zones) for 3 draft picks, all whom could have been busts. Is/was that "outside the box" enough for ya??
This team hasn`t played their best, loads of them are just not producing, whatever Chia does, as with every team, he has to do so with the awareness that a guy named Rask needs to be re-signed, possibly Horton, and a cap falling next season, so, as simple as many of us here make it to be, or think it is, pick up the phone, talk to another GM and a deal gets done as quickly as it does on the boards, most here know, that just isn`t the reality.
I`ve read for years when Chia hasn`t made whatever deal a fan or some fans want, they post the "sat on his hands" BS, of course, never knowing just how active Chia was, how often and how many calls he made, and then there`s the other side, what was the asking price for player X,Y or Z??? I`ll let Chia be the GM, he`s done enough to earn my trust. Doesn`t mean I find no fault ever with him, but I completely disagree with your opinions about him refusing to think outside the box.
