No, in that situation that's exactly what you do. If Pietro rings it around the boards it loses momentum and the Boston player keeps it onside. By firing it high and hard (which is what the trajectory was) he clears the zone fairly easily.

If anything the ref should hang by the side of the goal net if he is worried about a clear behind the boards.
