There's no pleasing some.

Lots of racket about dealing 2nds and 3rds for spare parts the last few deadlines.

They go and add a big fish and it's not enough.

You want to play the game? You've got to pay the price.
You're bidding against other teams.
Things don't happen in a vacuum.

The club has come back down to earth and maybe this is the shot in the arm that they need for the stretch run and maybe it's not.

The odds are that they won't win the Cup.
It's hockey and that's the risk you run.
Many will then point to this and say they wasted a 1st.

I'm for swinging for the fences.

After digesting this deal for a few hours, I'm happy with it. I was never much of a Nash fan. Not because of any perceptions such as "laziness" or not producing in the playoffs but, because I never thought he justified the hype surrounding him. Maybe I just don't appreciate what he does because I never really watched CBJ and watch very few NYR games.

Having said all of that, I thought a big scoring winger would really benefit the Bruins. If Nash's name was Player X I would say that's a good addition to this lineup. Therefore, I believe Nash is a good pickup.

Now for the assets given up.

The Pick - The Bruins were probably going to have to part with this pick for a good player. This year's pick is probably going to be bottom 5 so that doesn't sting too much

Belesky - Retained salary or not, he's gone. That frees up some cash and a roster spot for somebody....ANYBODY....who can play either in Boston or Providence. Matt didn't have a future with the team so there's no need to tie up a roster spot

Lindgren - The Bruins can't keep all their prospects. There simply isn't enough room. With Carlo and Charlie Mac, already contributing and Zboril and Lauzon working their way through the system, Lindgren was expendable.

Spooner - I always thought Spooner was a square peg in a round hole in Boston. Whether it was Julien's perceived mishandling of the kid, his inability to succeed at centre, or adjusting to his transition to wing, I always thought there was something off. It seemed like he didn't fit with the rest of the roster. Sometimes things just don't work out. Bottom line is, he was just a guy. Every team has Spooners. Guys that are nice but relatively replaceable. This year he was replaced by Nash. Next year it'll be one of the kids or a free agent. I like the kid and genuinely hope he has a successful career but it's not going to be in Boston.

Ultimately, Sweeney bundled a few expendable assets to fill a need (at least...I think it was a need). Overall, good deal. Not great....not terrible. I'm happy with it.

Now, if he can figure out a way to package Postma and a 7th for Karlsson, we're good

It's a solid trade for both teams. Personally, I'd have preferred sending a 2019 1st because 2018 is considered a strong and deep (2 rounds of good prospects).
As people have said, Lindgren is the 3rd or 4th LD prospect (even after trading O'Gara) in the Bruins system so it's good to trade from strength.
Losing Spooner only hurts for the center depth (a concern after reports of Bergeron in walking boot and game time decision tonight) but GM DS must feel strongly enough with Swarz, Czarnik, and JFK to fill in.

As rentals go, expensive and a gamble but they did not mortgage the future so thumbs up. :thumbu:

The good...
Ballsy move.
I think Nash and Krejci are going to be great together.
Beleskey at 50% is better than a buyout.

The bad...
Spooner, a 1st AND Lindgren? We gave up a TON.

The rationalization
I think they liked both Bjork and Donato better at RW than Spooner.
They have the depth at LD to move Lindgren and not really 'feel' the loss in the prospect pool.
Even though I'm not a fan of rentals (unless you plan to re-sign them), I still like that Sweeney showed he's willing to go for it. I think that gives the team a boost mentally, and when you think about future deadlines you can kind of look back and say, if the B's are in position to make some noise, you know Sweeney's going to go all in.

Carey price was in all star game this year ))))))))) so.....your argument....hihihhi

I’ll be honest. Your early comment that started this was off the mark because I didn’t write the headline but you seem to be blaming me for whatever weird strange reason in your gourd for the media calling him “allstar”. 2). Generally, when some is an allstar in the past they are always considered an allstar by sport’s writers in the present, much like an ex-president is always referred to as Mr President. It’s a nod to their accolades of the past.

Lastly, I have no idea what your above post is trying to convey here. It’s a whole bunch of strawman and word vomit. I’ll see ya around.

Enjoy Rick on your post season run. He is a quality guy and a solid all around player, even if he isn't the dynamic goal scorer he once was. As long as you aren't expecting him to be your #1 guy, he should fit in nicely. Most Rangers fans biggest gripes with him (or at least mine) was that he was grossly overpaid for his offensive production. Good luck the rest of the way.

I give Sweeney credit for making a ballsy move to take a shot at the big prize.

Nash needs to improve on his playoff numbers, though:

77 Games 15 goals 26 assists 41 points

Trying to like it but... huge price for 30 games.

Shows confidence in the team, and we really didn't give up much from the farm. Also got half off Beleskey for the last 2 years, and it would have been 4 if we bought him out (on top of Hayes and Seidenberg).

We have a good team this year and we added one of the better pieces available. We have a chance to win it and this gives us a better chance. Nash will likely go to whoever gives him the most money next year, this could be his last real chance to win a Cup. Should be motivated. I'm excited. It must be exciting to move from a lethargic team to a real contender, looking forward to seeing what he can do with some good linemates.

On the bright side? We kept Donato, JFK, Etc

Yes, it's a steep price for a rental, but we're going for it. And I respect it. Hopefully Rick can produce well.

Didnt expect to wake up to this. Thought Nash would have cost more. Spooner as the 2nd main piece of the deal makes me smile. Beleskey gone is good. Team has lots of LHD in the system not worried. Was kind of meh about giving up a 1st but team already has lots of prospects and can still find gold in the 2nd and 3rd.

Skipped the last 5 pages, so if I'm repeating stuff my bad. Things not being talked about enough:

1) Spooner is/was on his way to a 5m deal most likely. Sweeney and Neely were NEVER going to give it to him.

2) Spooner is a playoff ghost. I'd much rather not have the bad example. If you look at stuff like blocked shots stats, you can clearly see that Nash is the kind of guy that's going to give you way way more effort than Spooner on any given night. And that's contagious. Also love another high volume shooter on the team. 6'4 215 doesn't hurt either.

3) If Sweeney had done nothing, everyone would cry that other Eastern teams are going for it while we are not. The fact is that he's actually taking a chance here. He's also finally giving Krejci a sniper on his wing. Now it's time for Krejci to step up.

4) What about leadership? I was told Backes was a leader. Nash has to bring that over Spooner too. If you like Backes you've got to have Nash at least close in quality of play.

5) People saying Sweeney has been drafting so well with 1st rounders that it hurts to give one up. I think he's at best 50-50 on his 1st rounders. So let's pump the breaks there. The 1st was fair value, nothing more nothing less.

If there's anything to be mad about, it's that his old Beleskey mistake caused a waste of assets now. But that is what it is.

I like the deal. Go Bruins!

.

a ton? not really, IMO. the 1st/lindgren is cost of a high-end rental. i'd peg lindgren's value at about a 2nd round pick.
hanzal got a 1st/2nd last year and nash is better. so it costs you spooner/7th to be rid of half of beleskey's deal.
saves them about 1 million on the beleskey side, considering they already buried 1M this year.

I'll give Sweeney credit for showing some balls and making a push this year. I really don't care about losing Spooner or Lindgren (Kevan Miller 2.0) and we have enough prospects to forego a #1 this year.

End of the day it all comes down to how well Nash plays through the playoff run. In my opinion, our second line just became a lot more difficult to play against.
