Good acquisition. They needed a competent right side NHLer to finish out the season. For the cost of next year’s 4th, that’s fine. He has looked good in these two games, but history tells me he might be playing above his level, which is common for the first few games when a player joins a new team.

I don’t see how an extension would make sense though, unless they are moving Peeke. No room for two 3rd pair right side D taking up $2.5 to $3M (or whatever Joki’s next contract will need to be to sign him).

Why? You are talking 2 guys who will play a combined 36 minutes a night. Why can't they both make 3 million, especially in an era where the cap is ballooning

One thing I noticed is Joker is over the top enthusiastic about playing in Boston or just playing hockey in general. He celebrates goals and teammate's fights(Big Z 2.0's) like he's been on the team forever. He was laughing his ass off as Zad went down the runway, calling out Bennet as the P word.
I haven't seen him make too many bad judgement plays and is willing and able to pinch the blueline when needed.
Resign him for sure. A very good 4 or 5 as a Dman.
He was 19 rookie playing with full season Brent Seabrooke & Duncan Keith

He’s only 25

I’ve liked him on Buffalo

Once he got flipped for Alexander Nylander I was on him out of curiosity

We can agree to disagree

I’ve seen a good 15-20 times and he’s solid good puck mover fundamentally sound

This was my sneaky favorite move draft day assuming he signs which I am certain is the plan

Carlo replacement....depending on the price some good asset management by Sweeney
He’s also on a Sabres team that has a dozen top 10 picks on their team including multiple #1 overall defensemen

They are a shit show and have tried to add veteran D’s with mediocre success to pair with these guys

A guy who went late first Ryan Johnson is buried in AHL ~ I’d poach him if I was a Western team

Samuelsson another young D

Jokiharju different coaches, systems, partners, phenoms ~ get some stability and work with the highly respected (nhl people not Bruins followers)

DKH, do you remember when I suggested to a Sabres fan that we could do a Carlo for Kulich, Jokiharju and third rounder trade a few months ago? Still would prefer Kulich over Minten but Sweeney did very well with Carlo as a trade chip. Jokiharju over Carlo changes the dynamic of the defense to the better. Altough worse than Carlo defensively he is on a another level as a puck mover und with his offense. I can´t count how many plays died on Carlo´s stick and he broke up the circle in the o zone.

Carlo had trouble getting out of his own zone cleanly and seldom, not never, had the ballz to pinch the blueline.
Can't give up goals when the puck not in your end. Over 2 games Joker has provided better breakouts than Carlo has this year.
I truly believe those early consecutive concussions(year 1+2) changed the course of Carlo's career.

I agree. I think there is zero doubt that Carlo's concussion issues have had a major impact on his career. I'm frankly impressed he's still playing. Plenty of times I thought a given hit was the one that would rule him out.

He's a nice kid and I wish nothing but good things for him.

Toronto still has so many fundamental shortfallings that I don't worry about sending good wishes young Brandon's way.

No doubt about the cocussions as Carlo was a shadow of rookie Carlo! I had real hope for our D when he first got here but the last 5 or 6 seasons, brutal.
I'm not usually a fan of giving up a draft pick for a player another team is trying to get rid of but a fourth round pick in the history of the game, probably never becomes what this young man currently is. Great pick up by the Sweeniuos!

Carlo was never the same after Ovechkin cheapshotted him in the last game of the 2017 season

No way better than Krug offensively, not even close. A bit better defensively than Krug. Gryz at 25-26 which is what Joker is, no. I guess they could try to get him at
3.1M again if he can play with Zadorov but that would mean a really expensive D corp. at over $30M. With the top 6 needing 2 meaningful upgrades they might not have room.
If this Zadorov Jokiharju pairing keeps looking as good as it has signing Jokiharju around 3x3 would be a smart move.
Lindholm-McAvoy
Zadorov-Jokiharju
Lohrei-Peeke

That's a heck of a good looking D core with size and mobility.

oof what does it cost though?

Looks like over 30M to me. 11 more in nets is 41M floor and we haven't done forwards yet.

It's possible that can be a competitive team. But I have my doubts.

Btw your pairings are exactly what I'd want too, if money wasn't an issue. Although I get a nice feeling in my plums thinking of:

Lohrei-McAvoy
Lindholm-Peeke
Zadorov-Jokiharju

With time fairly even between 2nd and 3rd pairings

Carlo was making 4 million so if you give Jokiharju 3 that's an extra million you can toss to Lohrei and your D costs the same as it already did.

In the long run if it's getting too expensive and Lohrei develops and demands more then you can move Lindholm. I think it's very manageable.

Yes I do I loved it but Kulich couldn’t see them giving up but I like where you were shopping

A few years ago had a discussion that Jokiharju would be a guy the Oilers should get for 2nd pair

This is 100% where I’m at pairings and all

Brandon Carlo is a decent hockey player and a good teammate, but I am glad that the Bruins got a 1st round pick for him. He might be one nasty hit away from having his career curtailed with his history of head injuries. That is the reality of someone like him with a history of concussion issues.

For a guy with his size, he sure lacked the snarl of a Zdeno Chara for instance. Imagine a Brandon Carlo with snarl? That would have been one nasty hockey player. Carlo lacks puck moving ability. I wish Carlo well. Great trade!

It isn't fair to compare anyone against Chara for "snarl" and a physical game. Carlo has made a great career for himself.

That rotation is exactly what I hope to see for next season. Add Wotherspoon or one of the B’s prospects as the #7.

Doesn’t matter what it costs as that’s a winning defense. Bruins management can figure the cap out.

100%. I'd rather be a little heavy towards the D than the other way around ,which has been the Toronto way.

and the cap is going up and up again. Add to that the possibility next year or down the line that Minton or another prospect makes it and you have cap relief.
In this cap era one of the things that can keep a team going is having some ELCs on the roster. They balance your payroll. Always going for free agents makes it harder. Maybe they've realized this.

You didn't give Lohrei his BIG raise
