Because they don’t look at him as a rental…potentially. As Hook said, they view him as someone they might be able to help get to his ceiling, which is a first round ceiling. If they like what they see getting a close look on our system this year, they’ll jump on him in FA. If not, they feel the opportunity was worth the risk. They like him enough to invest.

I mean, most on our board view Carlo as a trash one dimensional defensive defenseman. But that defensive acumen just netted a good prospect and top pick.

There’s definitely a gap between the assessment of value between fans and pros when it comes to defensive defenseman.
I suppose but seems like a pretty steep price to audition a guy you could just keep scouting and sign in a few weeks. Maybe there is something to it.

Seems like that style of defenseman (middling puck mover) has been a tough one for Sweney to identify real talent. Maybe the style is too close to home for him?

Interesting that he and Mittlestadt were both first rounders in 2017.

Like Mittelstadt, I need to give him 6-8 games before I can have a true opinion on him.
@Alicat that is the second time I've seen you post this. I do admire the maturity and reasoned approach.

However, that is not how the TDL works around here for these types of deals. You need to come up with an immediate and definitive view on why this a) sucks donkey parts or b) is better than an all expense paid vacation to St John.

There is no room for measured reactions. None. Get your shit together.

More head scratching than pitchfork grabbing
Not to me. McAvoy hurt, Carlo dealt. Peeke is your only actual NHL RH shot dman. Mitchell is a tweener. What’s your answer for the right side? Wotherspoon on his off side? Wotherspoon is needed on the left side with Hampus out. This team is out of NHL dmen. So he moved a 4th. Not a big deal

What do they need to win this year?

Kind of surprise move. Divers son (dad Juha Jokiharju was pro diving class in Finnish hockey), that needs to be said. :D
Anyway, total opposite we have used to. Does not have size, grit or anything from 80's, that Neely is looking for.

Just cannot see why they did this. Cheap copy of Gryzz and new whipping boy was great way to describe this trade.

That might be a good thing then. The Neely Way didn't work this year.

A 4th rounder is a steep price? Really? If any NHL team got a player as good as Joki out of the 4th round the've knocked it way out of the park. Except for Swayman (and goalies draft positions are different anyway) who is the last Bruins 4th rounder to be an every day NHL player? Danton Heinen in 2014 I believe. Some years they didn't even have one and there is a reason teams are fine giving away 4th round picks in trades, because there is a tiny chance you get a Drake Batherson and huge chance you get absolutely nothing (Curtis Hall, Jess Gabrielle etc.).

For a few weeks of the guy in a season you aren't making the playoffs - yeah it's worth nothing other than the chance to talk contract with him in person.

Got to admit the "except for Swayman" line gave me a chuckle

Why would that give you a chuckle? Goalie draft positions are evaluated differently than skaters, and most know that, but if I didn't throw the caveat in there some wag around here would be in with the "well, actually . . ." Best to deal with it up front. And anyway, 4th round is not a "steep" price for an NHL player, even a rental. It's worth saying, again that the Bruins are auditioning him and clearly were interested in the player. If he sucks and ends up walking, they've lost a 4th rounder and a chance at the next Curtis Hall, I guess. It just doesn't feel steep to me at all.

Guess they should let all picks after round three go then?

I just don't get the value unless there's something they see and think they can lock him up before he hits FA. There's no sense I can see in propping up the roster for the rest of this season.

With all that went down yesterday it’s wild that folks are up in arms about moving out a 4th for an NHL RH shot dman
Peeke worked out well this guy is better at the acquisition date of Peeke

Obviously they have seen a lot of him and traded the 4th as an audition to see if fits

RHD was a rare teen in NHL with 400 games by 25

Reading multiple scouting reports he’s a smart very skilled puck mover- they added skill guys yesterday

Red Line 2017

Geekie- ‘Geeks most underrated player in draft’

Mittlestadt - tremendous speed
Jokiharu - slightly built; love his smarts & puck movement

Michael Dipietro - a winner….phenomenal down-up-movement’ ultra competitive- only 6 feet held against him…..future 1 on a contender comp Ryan Miller

Viel - tough as dirt

We're auditioning a guy to see if he's got anything to add to this team in the future in the most minor of trades. Will someone please think of the 4th round pick?

He's not signing before July 1.

A 26 year old UFA defenceman, even if he didn't reach his full potential is not passing up free agency for this dumpster fire. No competent agent would advise a player to sign here when this year teams will have actual cap room on July 1, unless the Bruins vastly overpay.
