Seriously, I suppose it can be argued that Slavin and Pesce don't create a ton of offense as a pair. I think if you're going to do this, though, you go ahead and put Hanifin on the second pair with Pesce and bury Hainsey on the third pair.
I can buy that argument but as you said that's not the method I would have chosen. Really though I think pesce and slavin have been easily the best defensemen at keeping the zone and sustaining pressure even if they haven't had as many individual numbers to show for it
