There is a long long list of high quality NHL players who took years to develop. Those who say he doesn't show flashes are not watching the games closely enough. I get the anxiety, but he needs more time to continue to develop.
Where are the flashes? I'm being 100% serious, I don't see them at all but maybe I am missing something. I want nothing more than for Laf to be what he was billed as, but it's impossible to deny he's been nothing but underwhelming so far.

Obviously the title misconstrues the Brooks article and is meant to get the reaction it did. Perhaps don't take the bait.

That said Brooks, as he often does, makes unpopular comments worth considering. No one says LAF is a flop. That said he seems to be floundering a bit and if this team has aspirations this season LAF may be misplaced on the top line. A top line that clearly misses Buch since he drove a lot of the play with Mika finishing and Kreider in front of the net. Not sure how LAF fits in at this time. LAF looked better with Chytil and Blais on the third line.

Gallant seems to have identified a few combinations that work well:

Kreider - Zibanejad - xxx
Panarin - Strome - xxx
Laf - Chytil - Blais
Reaves - Rooney - Hunt

That leaves Kakko, Goodrow, Gauthier, and McKegg for the last two slots. Kakko and Goodrow make sense at 1RW and 2RW, with Kakko in the Buch slot and Goodrow in the Fast slot. However, with Kakko out injured, Gallant was faced with the choice of putting Gauthier/McKegg on the first line or breaking up the third line. He opted for the latter for one night only and even then that lasted just half the game. With Kakko back on Friday, Laf will be where he belongs--on the third line with Chytil and Blais. I'm looking forward to seeing this full lineup in action. I think it'll work well.

Don’t let the thread title distract you from the fact that Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, "Spare Tire" Dixon.

Damn straight he did :thumbu:

They are just how they sound, flashes. Does he carry the puck end to end highlight reel style? Nope, definitely not. That wasn't his game in the Q and it certainly won't be in the NHL. He's a physical, playmaking winger. So far this season, the entire NYR offense has been in a serious rut. Almost zero sustained forecheck outside of the home opener. I'd argue that you could put down Breadman the same way as you could Laffy this season...but if you look, there are flashes. Not sure how else to explain it but I am certainly not the only one who can see where this is going for Laffy.

To give him his due Brooks literally seems to break every significant Ranger story. No one else, not Carp, Vince, etc. And he is willing to take on players and management, not just look to get along for access. He'll be missed when he is gone.

he’s a big time trouble maker. I get controversy sells yet these media clowns hurt the team. They lead a very LOUD minority around by the nose. Now the target is Laf while Mika and Panarin have fewer goals them he.

I mean, Laf was passing no absolutely no one all game...he was pushed around. That HAPPENED.

Maybe keeping him on the Cheque Mates line with Blais and Le Chytil will work if he's the one driving the play, gain some confidence?

We are so starved for “flashes” that we had half this board nearly climaxing over a tape to tape pass he completed for a primary assist last season.

We thought having him a bit insulated with guys like Panarin/Zbad/Kreider etc would be a good thing maybe it has actually been a bad thing?!
Like others have mentioned play him on the third line and let him figure it out on his own not playing next to a Mika or Strome. The Mika line thing just isn't working. All three look lost playing together.

A big issue with Laf is his board work. He either hesitates and just defaults to defending. Or he goes in there, makes contact but doesn't seem to know where to position his stick, hips and shoulders to get position, to pin a guy down and recover a puck. In fact, you never see him pin in a guy along the boards and dig out a puck.

Look, I get it if you're a smaller guy you have to be first to the puck and get your stick on it and chip it to an area where there a teammate. Or absorb contact, dig it out and keep moving. You see that all the time with Panarin and Strome. But Laf is sturdy and big enough to go in there with force, make contact and use your stick to create a turnover. But he's doing neither right now. And it really effects the lines he's on. It's really ineffective board work and he just won't be in the lineup very long if he's not able to win board battles. He has to focus on this.

Beyond that, he's not showing the speed or elusiveness to make guys miss. They're able to body him. If he can't greatly increase his speed or greatly improve his physical play he just won't be effective at this level. I keep waiting for one of the two to take off.

At least with Kakko you can see the board play and you can see how he'll progress using his physicality.

You look at Chytil who has size but still isn't great along the walls. But with his speed, you can see him create space.

What's it gonna be Laf?

Agree that Brooks likes to stir things up, even make things up. Kind of like the news media these days. That's what sells. Few want to listen to NPR.

That's the Ying and Yang of Brooks. That said he still breaks almost every significant real Ranger story, more than the rest of the entire beat combined. And he confronts management and some players at times. His back and forth with Torts was quite entertaining. So he may not be everyone's cup of tea but he will be sorely missed when he retires. Who can replace him?

I'm not particularly worried about him but i do they are forcing the Zibanejad thing too much, i actually liked him, Chytil and Kakko last year. I think at this point he needs to get on a line with Goodrow and Blais and have them drag him into some physical, down low hockey.

Laf almost did it last night. The play where he got knocked over and still somehow put a decent shot on net. That was ALMOST his big coming out play where he does something spectacular and makes a greast play out of nothing. Kind of like Ovie's goal from his back way back when. Instead it was the Gauthier of almost great plays.

So I'm still waiting to see a glimpse of something amazing from Laf. Something, anything.

Kakko is a year ahead of Laf though. It wasn't until a few games into last season that you could see that improvement. I am expecting to see some similar progress this year from Laf, even if it doesn't result in a ton of goals/primary assists.

He's had those 2 on 1 OT goals last year and this year. That goal he scored from close-in while getting knocked down, also last year. There are other flashes of brilliance.

Right now he is Jimmy Vesesy, we need him to become Jonathan Huberdeau.

It took Huberdeau a few seasons to get going as well.

Not we.

I wanted him starting with Chytil and Kakko.

The fact that Sammy fits in there nicely is a bonus.

Lafreniere is an alfa player being put in a secondary role.

Not surprisingly he was more present when on his own line.
