I think that's the low bar to be honest. He's the best center available and his 200' game is very solid. There are going to be 3-5 teams in on him (or more)

We were told by another fanbase on here that he’s not worth a 1st and their GM never trades 1sts away for rentals.

There's never a bidding war and no one ever returns a 1st and an A prospect. Nelson will return exactly what every other top 6 rental has ever returned in the history of the cap era, exactly one first round pick (top 10 protected) + a 3rd in a future draft year + a team's 7th-10th best prospect.

Nelson will return a 1st+ IMO. Best center on the market that is available. Islanders need a retool and are not making the playoffs. Fans can say what they want but they would be ignoring the supply/demand at TDL's.

The other might be ROR. I can see the Preds trading him. He has two more years in term left.

Then it comes down to Evans and Gourde types. Am I forgetting any centers? No idea if the Habs trade Evans or not. Gourde probably gets traded.

I would not argue against the 1st and A prospect too much. Those are rare to have in one deal. I can just see Nelson being targeted a lot and the normal 1st, 3rd and 7-10 best prospect not being enough. I can see 3-5 teams offering that

Nelson is a complete center. It's not just an offensive piece or defensive piece. He can provide both and I can see a bidding war there.

I fully understand the supply/demand factor and know what Nelson will bring. Looking at teams in the hunt alone, I’d put him above just about every teams 2nd line center and in some cases 1st line as well. To say he’s going to return a. 1st+ is completely realistic.
The biggest thing is that the Isles aren’t touching a cap dump with term (more then this season) just to make the money factor work. Another fun one with the Brock rumors is the main team he’s linked to (Minnesota) doesn’t technically have a 1st (without conditions until 2027) and their prospects that have been rumored to be pushed just aren’t worth it. It would be no different than taking a 1st and C tier prospect for him when we know teams will blow that deal away.

I guess I still have faith in NHL GMs to back out of deals because they're unnecessarily cautious

I'd prefer to see in this thread an offer of 2 prospects instead of a #1 pick. Would prefer at least one to be close to NHL ready.

We can take back an expiring salary or retain if needed in order to get those prospects.

Examples:
Washington:
Cristall and Muggli (and take back Bear as a one-year dump)
for Nelson at $4,000,000

Colorado:
Ritchie and Behrens for Nelson at $3,000,000 and maybe a late pick

Vegas:
Connoly and Holtz for Nelson at $3,000,000

I doubt many other Habs fans would do this but I have been looking for a stop gap if Evans gives us contract fits. I was looking at Gourde earlier and also ROR. However, I have been pondering about Nelson.

* Nelson basically gets paid $4M (+/-) vs what Evans will get. Worth it though
* My concern would be term. I would prefer 5 years taking him to age 35.

This would be my offer for Nelson:

* Maybe a 4th rounder added.
* Conditions on getting an extension for Nelson (5x $7.5M)

Never know about lou and his plans, but he should take that offer for Brock and be happy

Honestly would rather cut down a few of the non 1sts and upgrade the prospect personally. The description of Mesar’s development just gives me bust vibes at this point.

Washington says, Eller, Muggli, 25 first for Nelson.

Not bad, but I do want prospects over picks because I don't think this is the best draft for depth.

I think that is as deep as I would go. I'd let you see what prospects you can get from other teams and tell you to call me back later once you get all the offers.

My approach as a Habs fan is to retain our A and B+ prospects because we need them filling in depth holes and they are close to NHL ready. The Flames 1st is 3+ years away. 12-18 range 1st is a solid offer. My back pocket option B offer is Flames 1st and Newhook (but I rather option A above). That gives the Islanders a solid dart to get a grade A and Newhook is not done growing yet. He's been much better lately too. I just see clutter on the Habs in the coming years.

I think you have a better shot at adding a grade A prospect with a 12-18 range pick vs what other teams will offer.

I know you were just spitballing here, but I don't see any way the Caps trade Cristall for a rental.

Just going with the "2 prospects instead of picks" I could see them maybe doing (rights to) Chesley -OR- Vincent Iorio (both better prospects than Muggli right now, RH PMD) and then maybe a Petr Sikora, Zak Funk, Henrik Rybinski, Patrick Thomas, type, a guy who stands a good chance of playing in the NHL at some point but pretty unlikely to be a top 6/top 4 type.

(The Caps were linked to Nelson in some reports.)

As a random observation too, the Caps are near the maximum contract limit, as it stands right now they couldn't sign both Leonard and Chesley out of college without shedding one elsewhere. They'd probably like to include one or two in any trade, even if that's adding a 7th for the Isles to take a no-name guy under contract playing in Europe.

Are there some examples of close-to-ready prospects acquired in deadline deals who actually became good pros?
