Brind'Amour throws Tulsky under the bus for the Rantanen situation: "And the question is, should we have known that before we attempted to sign him?"

Because his Instagram influencer girlfriend needed taller buildings with brighter lights, apparently
I'd rather have my girlfriend influence my choice than some dudes in suits who tried to cash in on me one last time. Even if the reason is as trivial as him liking the Dallas jerseys more, why shouldn't Rantanen be able to make his choice?

I don't fully understand Rantanen's opposition to playing for Carolina.
A good team with good coaching, future looks good, and could have helped them finally win the cup again which would have been a nice legacy.
He didn't like Rod or the style of play the Canes have which requires players to actually try and skate hard every shift

His gf reportedly didn’t like it and his style is completely at odds with the Canes. It’s not about effort, dont be all salty, he’s just a possession/rush guy who would not gel with a dump and chase cycle team. It’s best for everyone, your GM goofed, but imo actually rescued it remarkably well.

My god lol
I mean you can disagree with this take but it's fairly accepted across fans of the team, other team, and talking heads that the assets returned at the end of the day do exceed the value of packages that Necas + was being talked about previously.

It's obviously not apples to apples since it's more of a futures package which isn't what the Canes were originally looking at doing (duh!)

Stankoven

Necas

No, it's not M. Tkachuk or a signed Rantanen or anything like that, which is what the Canes ideally wanted but it's still good overall value.

I wholeheartedly disagree. It's a coping mechanism.

Do you not realize how low the value of the 2027 3rd and 2028 1st are?

Thats why hiring the math whiz/analytics guy isn't usually the right move. Chayka sucked and tried to cheat the system. Dubai hasn't been very good. Tulsky not looking too great these days.
This is why you need a hockey guy - like Barry Trotz!

Wait a minute...

At the end of the day Carolina took a gamble on the type of player that rarely becomes available and they have lacked in the past. The gamble didn't pay off and they pivoted to recoup what they could from the trade.

In the end they are right back where they were before the trade, pretty much a lock to make the playoffs, a long shot to win the cup (spare me the odds makers) and they continue to build towards the future which has been the strategy from day 1 under Dundon.

You don't know the value of it and neither do I. If they went out this summer or next year and made some massive trade with those two 1sts for a piece better than Necas then you'd be sitting here eating your crow looking like an idiot for being so smug in this thread.

I think my question is if Carolina ever talked to Rantanen before trading for him. I know they don't have to, but it'd seem like a good thing to do in general. It's 2025, players are more than just assets.

Your whole argument was "Do not discuss the pick value, we can't know that. Also it COULD turn out to be better for Carolina months to years from now, with hindsight"

Why would I offer a substantial rebuttal to that? You said nothing.
No my whole argument is Necas would not have returned that same package and therefore Carolina came out pretty good at the end of the day.

Yeah it only arguably cost them an entire season+ of contention

And he absolutely would, by the way.
Necas hasn't exactly blown the doors off in the playoffs for them. Stankoven was pretty solid for Dallas last year in the playoffs and could be a sneaky good add. I don't think Necas, a player they've had for their entire contention window was moving the needle for them.

Fans of teams that haven't seen the second round since they were born or haven't seen the playoffs since Reagan's time who allow themselves to pass judgment (without having the basis to do so) on a GM/Team that when things go badly goes out in the second round. There are people who truly live on memories.

:thumbu:

So their leading scorer wasn't moving the needle for them. Gotcha!
Yes, an extremely hot start to the season will do that. As you can see his production has been worse in Colorado despite playing with Mackinnon and has been a downgrade on what Rantanen provided. Are you able to make a post without a sense of sarcasm and self righteousness or is this how you talk to everyone in your life?
