Brind'Amour throws Tlusty under the bus for the Rantanen situation: "And the question is, should we have known that before we attempted to sign him?"

If he came in and scored a PPG+ in those 13 games, we’d be having a whole different discussion right now…

It definitely would have made the decision to trade him more difficult, if it was done at all. The fact that he half-assed it in Carolina made the decision very easy

So your genius plan is for the Avs to sign and trade him to Carolina?

Thus costing Carolina more assets (since a signed Rantanen would be worth more than Necas) and having the same issue of Rantanen not wanting to play in Carolina? Except even worse, since he would have signed the contract assuming he’d stay in Colorado.

And this assumes Rantanen’s new contract wouldn’t have a NMC, which it almost assuredly would.

Amazing.

You misunderstood. That is not what sign and trade means in sports.

If I'm Carolina, I'm only doing the trade if Rantanen himself has agreed to a sign & trade. He knows he's being traded to Carolina when he signs the contract, it's part of the deal.

As in, I'm not leaving it up to chance as they did. If the contract isn't signed before or as he steps foot in Carolina, I don't make the trade.

Jiri Tlusty out here catching strays

For me the situation is kinda like “do I want to go to Fred’s house three Saturday's from now?” Someone asks me that I go “yea maybe, I gotta see what I got going on but il probably let you know” Feigning interest not to be rude but I have no intention of going to Fred’s house. Fred’s house is weird, kinda small and smells like old malted 40 bottles and skittles (cause of the candles).

When the time comes to confirm whether I will be going to Fred’s, I got say “Nah man not really, I can think of at least 4 other places I’d rather be.”

It’s kinda like that. Now if Fred bought extra boneless chicken wings and that wine he knows I like to drink, that’s on him. I never confirmed my attendance.

My thread is now a winner in so many ways.

Stankoven and Jankoswki have looked like a better fit in 1 game than Rantanen did in 13. Also, do people not realize that 1st round picks are often used as trade fodder? It’s not “futures”. It’s “trade bait at the draft”.

Carolina’s final offer to Rantanen was apparently $14 x 8. Money wasn’t the issue in this situation.
The draft is in the future.

Tulsky and co. not insisting they get to speak to Rantanen and/or his agent prior to the trade seems like a pretty big screw up. Look at Dallas; they're approach was that either Rantanen signs an extension or there is no trade. Carolina not doing that same is on them entirely.

And the fact that they then turned around and quickly traded him when he wouldn't sign shows they really weren't prepared for the risk. It's amateur hour over there.

Fred doesnt really like you, he was just being polite. He thinks you smell like failure and broken dreams.

The difference is that Dallas was given permission to talk to Rantanen before the trade, and thus, could work out a deal. The Avalanche didn’t give Carolina permission to talk to him, supposedly to prevent leaks, but also to prevent Rantanen from playing like ass, since he apparently turns to shit when a possible trade is hovering over him.

I dont think you understood that statement. Instead of trusting a simple conversation with Rantanen, they should have pushed for a contract signed, just like Dallas did. They probably wanted to save a few assets and took the risk. Idiot move if thats the case.

See above. The Avalanche prevented Carolina from talking to Rantanen, thus, no contract talks were had.

Wouldn't shock me at all if he told Carolina he would consider an offer before the trade without actually ever seriously considering it.
Exactly right. This is an embarrassment for Rantanen's agent who screwed over every party involved by trying to use the possibility of his client being perfectly "fine" if the team traded him as leverage against the Aves, assuming that they would buckle and give in to his demands.

Maybe he didn’t play so well becuase he was constantly being pestered to sign a contract. Rod’s system also does not seem to be terribly friendly to stat padding.

How is a trade at the draft going to help win tomorrow? That’s kind of the point of the sport.

It would be different if the Canes were in a position that they need to worry about the future. They’re the darlings after every draft because they take most of the guys that drop that people love. They should have no issue sacrificing futures to put them over the top. Tulsky did that and then chickened out.

Then dont do the trade.

Then dont do the trade.

Again, the knock on Carolina for years has been that they need “a gamebreaking player to push them over the top.” Rantanen was, theoretically, one of those. And all it would have cost them was a player they had previously spent the offseason trying to trade anyway. There’s no shot they should have passed on that, especially if they were told that Rantanen had no issue re-signing there.

Is that how you guys shake hands up there in Sweden?

Ya because the Avs werent going to allow Carolina to talk contract without some additional compensation. Carolina took a risk and it didnt pay off.

It paid off pretty well. The overall deal wound up being

Necas + Drury + 2nd + 4th

for

Hall + Stankoven + two 1sts + two 3rds

That’s a good deal. It just took a weird and painful path to get there.

I’d still take Necas and Drury over Stankoven and some firsts. Especially as a contending team. But in a vacuum the deal is fine enough. Let’s leave Carolina alone. No need to drag em for this situation. I hope they do well and can use those firsts in the offseason to retool a bit. I think the Canes will do fairly well contending in the East this season already. And next season they’ll be a very strong team.

Overall think every team did okay. The only negative for any team right now is that Rantanen took so long to do that Carolina might have shot themself in the foot for this season. But that’s very short term and I like their chances moving forward.

Having that many firsts to play with in the market as an already good team is dangeous for the East.

Stankoven isn't anywhere near Necas level for the next two years. And those two years matter a lot when Slavin is 30, Staal is 35, Andersen is 35.

The 1sts aren't that big a deal.. seattle got 2 firsts for Bjosktran and Gourde.
