TSN: Brian Burke sit down interview w/ James Duthie (Burke Thread)

My hope is for Rogers to buy Bell out with giving Bell the right to create a new South Ontario team, I'd hope for Hamilton/Oshawa or Whitby, they had Wayne Primeau, Keith Primeau, Joe Nieuwendyk, Paul Ranger, Jay Harrison, Jamie Allison, Adam Foote and Gary Roberts play in their local hockey so they're decent hockey producers.

Makes absolutely no sense, but I kinda had the same feeling as I was watching the presser.

I really do think he will come back as GM... As soon as I read his firing.

No way he comes back as GM of the leafs.

But i could see him being the GM of the team in Markham if that ever happens.

I always liked Burke as a person, and I really wanted to believe in him. I had no problem with him being such a big personality when so many others did, he had an old school vibe which gives him credibility in such a fickle market. Under his leadership we went from a team with zero quality NHL players and zero quality prospects to a team that has now some. That might not seem like much, but it's better than nothing. He put our money to work in the scouting department and we are now getting average results instead of just horrible. That sounds stupid when he trades 2 first round picks away, but he also traded for a few. Maybe that will be his legacy, and it's a good legacy to have. It's a lot better than remembering him for being the guy too stubborn to use our financial clout to it's full potential, or for being the guy who ensured that Boston will kick our ass for the next decade. It's better than remembering him as the guy who spent his time riding parade floats and touring Afghanistan instead of doing his job. It's certainly better than remembering him as the guy who wrote cheques with mouth that always bounced. I'd prefer to forget those things and remember him fondly as the fun personality who managed to finally get our scouting up to average. That sounds like sarcasm, but I assure you it isn't. Our scouting and player development has always just been that bad. I wish it were sarcasm. Thanks Burkie, you're fondly remembered by this guy.

I know it makes sense but I can just see it.

I don't believe this will happen at all

But if it was possible, I assume Nonis would step down in a couple of years, and they bring in Burke as interim after staying with the club as an advisor (on an additional 2 year deal after his current one ends), so his kids wouldn't have to move. After a half season search, the interim tag is removed

The interview with Duthie really highlights a few things about Burke.

First, he was absolutely in love with the celebrity aspect of being GM of the Leafs. In fact, that seemed to be the most important part of it for him.

Second, he doesn't have a filter between his brain and his mouth. He says things and then literally denies what he said seconds later.

It is truly bizarre.

He says it is humiliating to be fired in such a way. Then, Duthie restates what Burke has just said, and it dawns on Burke that what he has just said doesn't fit in with the blowhard image he works so hard to cultivate, so he withdraws it.

Then he says he is not professional. Dawns on the clown how bad that sounds and then seconds later claims he is the most professional person there is.

He is a loose-cannon, a buffoon and a clown. His mouth constantly got him in trouble during his time as GM, embarrassing himself and the team.

When presented with his own words, he would fly into a rage. And then he would make a new asinine pronouncement and the whole farce would start again.

There was no time for him to devote all his energies to the most important tasks of being a GM. He loved the spotlight, as proven by his post-firing round of interviews. He might just stick around Toronto and become a professional blowhard.

What a sad, sad spectacle he is making of himself. Luckily his sycophants in the media are trying to paint the board members as the unprofessional ones instead of the shrieking, bellowing, unprofessional buffoon who also happened to fail at putting together a winning team.

It's funny how bad some our fans look. The guy is down and out and gets the rug pulled out from under him.. He got fired and people can still bad mouth the guy when all the media wants to do is get their hands on an interview with the guy.. The guy above me just goes to show it. What do you expect the guy to say after getting fired for being who he is? He's got Irish blood in him and they have a temper. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean you need to make it seem like he was the worst thing that happened to this team. He gave this team an identity. A whole lot more of an identity then anyone since Pat Quinn. Maybe the GM shouldn't, but I think Burke builds teams that represent who he is. He didn't get to do it in Toronto, but wow. Some people need to be a bit more class.

OR maybe you just cant grasp the subtlies of what he is saying.

LIke can you differentiate between trading 3 draft picks for Kessel and trading Seguin, Hamilton and Knight for Kessel?

IT is basically a GTA IQ test in one question.

Bonus Question:

And can you see how TOR can say "We did not trade Seguin, Hamilton and Knight for KEssel" but Boston can say "we got Seguin, Hamilton, and
Knight for KEssel."?

Bazing. Haha, thought the same thing. He wasn't contradicting himself at all. "Getting fired is humiliating, but I don't feel humiliated" isn't a contradictory statement. It's not even a subtle one. I thought it was pretty obvious where he was coming from and what he was trying to say.

Agreed.

First, he was absolutely in love with the celebrity aspect of being GM of the Leafs. In fact, that seemed to be the most important part of it for him.

I didn't get that at all. Actually, if you did a word analysis, I think "we didn't win enough games" was probably the most common thing he said.

Second, he doesn't have a filter between his brain and his mouth. He says things and then literally denies what he said seconds later.

Really?

It is truly bizarre.

Do go on.

I don't think you quite understood his answer. It's cool though; English is a tough language.

Then he says he is not professional. Dawns on the clown how bad that sounds and then seconds later claims he is the most professional person there is.

Again, I don't think you quite got this one.

He is a loose-cannon, a buffoon and a clown. His mouth constantly got him in trouble during his time as GM, embarrassing himself and the team.

His mouth got him in trouble? With who, the media? Ahhhh anything but the media. Nobody gives a rats ass about what the media thinks. If you're calling anyone a blowhard here, it should be the Toronto media.

When presented with his own words, he would fly into a rage. And then he would make a new asinine pronouncement and the whole farce would start again.

Rage eh? Weird, I thought he held the exact same facial expression the entire time. Must be the most professional rager there is.

There are so many better words out there than "asinine."

There was no time for him to devote all his energies to the most important tasks of being a GM. He loved the spotlight, as proven by his post-firing round of interviews.

All two of them? Wow he loves that spotlight.

He might just stick around Toronto and become a professional blowhard.

Yeah I heard he's going to keep working with the LGBTQ GSM community. What a blowhard, right?

What a sad, sad spectacle he is making of himself. Luckily his sycophants in the media are trying to paint the board members as the unprofessional ones instead of the shrieking, bellowing, unprofessional buffoon who also happened to fail at putting together a winning team.

Burke is the kind of guy you want to be in a foxhole with. Such a great man. I hope he gets a new GM job, and I think he'll be great wherever he goes.

Made me sad really - I am still quite disappointed that the Leafs fired him, and really think this is a HUGE mistake. Timing is horrible, and I'd give him one more year.

Speaking of filters, you should remove yours, go back, and watch the video again. I'd spend five minutes tearing this nonsense apart but I can't be bothered.

Very well said minus the media part. Problem is, too many do listen to the media here in Toronto.

Oshawa wouldn't be the best pick for it neither would Whitby. Just isn't enough room imo to make a serviceable NHL arena. Not to mention the new GM Centre is only a few years old. Unless they tear down The Civic Auditorium but that wont happen since they did a lot of new renovations to it

Markham and Hamilton would be better choices

I've always gotten the impression that those who are so phenomenally put off by his charade were probably bullied at some point in their lives.

Can't believe MLSE fired him right before a 48 game season. At least give him half a season, MLSE doesnt have half a brain.

Agreed. I was thinking much of the same things while watching the interview. The mans brain just can't seem to keep up with his mouth. I mean, how many times did he basically complain about something and then seconds later, say he wasn't going to be complaining or *****ing?

Pure class. Hockey guy through and through. I hope he lands on his feet sooner rather than later. At least he's outta this gong show now. Look back and laugh Brian, look back and laugh.
He was and hell still is the major piece of the gong show. How many exit interviews is this guy going to do?
