Great post. Pretty much the situation which is why I don't see him back. $15M on the open market vs $8M from the NYR (total obviously) is a huge quality of life difference. I know it's easy to sit here and say it's still $8M! But that is a huge quality of life difference over the long haul. More so than $40M vs $50M.

Maybe there is a three year deal we can swing under the middle?

The way I see it, we need to start building our lines year to year. By this is mean having players that play together consistently. We have the core now. Look at teams like Boston, Pittsburgh, and even Anaheim. they have lines that have played together for years, they get used to playing with each other, they build chemistry and become more consistent. Certain players can be swapped out here and there, but there's never the overhaul we have had the past few years.

Right now I like
Kreider with Stepan
Brassard with Zucc, keep Pouliot if possible
MSL, think we need to find two guys to play with him. Hags has done a decent job, but think we can swap him for more of a shooter. (Or find a shoot-first center in the Carter-lite mold, but much easier said than done)
Boyle and Moore, look for a new third or keep Dorsett/Carcillo for cheap.

Looking at it this way, we really should try to resign Boyle, but he's a 4th line player. Love him, but can't break the bank for him. All depends on what he wants.

Deserves to be resigned. I always defended him because of what he brings in the playoffs and he hasn't disappointed.

The only reason why anybody hated him was because of Torts misread on when and how to use him.

2.3/year would be worth it to keep him for a few more years, IMO.

Him and Dom have set themselves up for great pay days. Just tremendous tonight, the shift they played leading up to the goal was insane. We will probably lose Boyle and keep Dom, but both guys along with Dorsett and Carcrillo actually gave us a real 4th line, thank you boys!

Obviously, none of us know for sure, but I really suspect that Boyle is a huge, huge part of the team in terms of setting the tone on the ice and in the room. Befriending new players, bonding with teammates etc.

I don't think they should match any UFA offers, but I would definitely sit him down and explain the situation to him. NYR want to keep him, but they're building a winner in the short term, and they can't afford to match desperate bottom teams' UFA offers. If he wants to take a number that isn't built on what those bottom teams offer, they can/should/will work something out, and he can stay here in a role that he is great at and try to win with the guys he's been playing with for many years in some cases. If he wants to take the highest number, that's fine, but NYR can't and won't try to match it. It's been a good time, but it is what it is.

Hard to say how it'll shake out. On one hand, Boyle seems to really like it here, and I wouldn't be shocked to see him leave some cash on the table to stay in New York. On the other hand, he's not a 5 mill/year guy, and leaving money on the table may really affect his quality of life down the line, way more than it would with a Callahan level player.

Either way, I've loved Boyle here. The only times he was frustrating were when he was asked to do too much.
Excellent post. I would not match any UFA offer either. But again, give him market value now and avoid spending more money trying to replace what he brings over next 3 years.

Listening to Boyle today with Francesa, will be interesting to see if he would take a discount to stay. Sounds like he is really close to his family up in Boston and they enjoy being able to come down and see him so easily. Guy loves being a Ranger and said he wants to stay, but that is not really news, I'm sure everyone wants to stay as long as they hit a certain dollar value.

Then again, he is hitting UFA at a perfect time where GM's with money to spend just to get to the floor could give him a big contract.

Boyle has to do what is best for the Boyle family.

Aren't there like 20+ Boyle children?

I actually think that Moore will get a larger offer than Boyle. There are going to be hard decisions to make, no doubt about it. Moore, Boyle, Carcilio, Pouiliot, Brassard, Stralman. Not to mention it would be far better to lock up Staal sooner rather than latter. There may not be enough money in the pot for everyone, even with a buyout of Richards. I think that you start with locking up Staal to a worthy contract. And then you see who truly wants to be a Ranger or who wants the biggest payday. Nothing wrong with the latter. Capitalism is the worst system, except for all the others.

It may be that the Rangers have to identify who they truly want/need and who they want back but cannot afford. To me, Boyle represents someone that should be brought back at fair market value. Not advocating overpaying him, but fair market value is more than a hometown discount. He is part of the backbone of this team and represents exactly the type of player that management has made mistakes on before and let go.

I will shout it from the rooftops: I love this guy. Definitely want him back.

He WILL get 3-3.5+ x 4-5 from some team on the open market. And as much as I want him back, I don't see how the Rangers can play in that range. It is what it is.

Do not bring back. Paul Gaustad gets 3.25M/year. Boyd Gordon gets 3M/year. Boyle is going to be in that range. Please do not make that mistake and give a 4th liner 3M+

Him and Stralman made themselves a lot of dough these past 25 playoff games, will miss them a lot if this what it for them.

Hell of a player, and great dude, but the guy is going to cash out!!! Congrats to him and all his hard work, he was a great Ranger for what he laid out there each and every night.

Will miss him greatly, but as those have already pointed out, he's likely to get 3+ in the open market.

Brian Boyle is the ****ing man.

From scrub, to god, to alright bottom sixer, to elite 4th liner.

Boyle's 20 goal season is still one of the most fun things I can think of when pondering recent Rangers history.

Love this dude and I hope we get him for cheap, but it won't happen. He deserves the money. Hopefully it comes from a WC team we don't play often.

Rangers never seem to extend their depth players before they hit free agency. I dont get it. People will see the money they get as ufas and say good thing we decided not to match but why does it have to get to that point? Other teams are constantly handing out those 3-4 year 1-2.5 mil/per extensions with soon to be ufas.

They should use the summer cap wiggle room plus the Richards amnesty to lock up Stralman and Boyle before July 1st. Then they can figure out out how to clear more space later.
