What would you be willing to trade in order to get Montreal's finest, Brendan Gallagher? It's time for him to shine with a team that's contending or close to contending. He's getting up in age (he just turned 28) and is in his prime years. Being wasted away in Montreal will just ruin an opportunity for him to go all the way (as you all already know, he's a heart-and-soul guy who will give his 110% every single game & is a pest to play against - and is a locker room dude, a gentleman & exudes leadership - but again, you all already know this).

His cap hit is very low and his salary even less, though his contract is up for renewal at the end of next season. That being said, he's not at all the type of guy who would go UFA-hunting. Maybe an extension can be discussed prior to the trade (a-la-Pacioretty with Vegas). Besides, I very much doubt teams would want to explore having him for 1 season only.

We're looking for PP-specialist wingers (since our PP really sucks), PMD/PP-specialist Dmen, or close-to-NHL-ready prospects, etc. Also, we can move up the draft this season by packaging our 16th OA + 2nd round picks, etc.

'we need wingers'
'let's trade the best one we have'
'good idea'
'we're in no man's land and need to rebuild'
'let's keep our veterans and waste the next 4-5 years, only to then realize they're old/useless'
'even better idea'

Believe me, I wouldn't want to trade Gally. But it's what needs to be done. We all know Bergevin is dead-set on keeping both Price and Weber because they show leadership qualities to the young ones, etc. But Gallagher is at the peak of his prime years. We can get a nice haul that will expedite our rebuild/retool.

we can't say in the same breath that we finally have some really good C depth and that we should dump our vets to get younger. which is it?

We need to make a decision. Either we go all in or we retool. Thing is, this team doesn't seem keen going either direction. Our C depth is young and still needs time to grow into their roles and prosper. This will take at least a couple of years. Then our defense is starting to get pretty old (Weber 35, Petry 33). Our goalie is getting pretty old (Price 33).

Again, it's either we go all in and NOW (which we will have to sacrifice some of our future) or we retool and build for the future. And to be honest, our future is looking very good with Romanov, Norlinder, Primeau, etc. But we're not there yet, and nothing's certain either... But I can tell you that if we maintain the status quo, we're going to waste players like Gallagher away. His body is not made to last to 34-35 years old.. But we're likely stuck with Price and Weber till the end (which is fine - it does bring a lot of value to the young players). Petry and Tatar will almost certainly be traded sometime next season (most likely before the TDL). Drouin and one of Domi/Danault's future with the team will be dictated this off-season/next season. The future is here. And with the pandemic cap situation, and a nice upcoming UFA season, MTL could better themselves with trades and free-agency acquisitions.

I wish Vancouver could fit him into their salary cap. Too many lesser quality bottom-six players making $3m.

Another day..another thread on trading our heart and soul.

Yes, you can have him but the price will reflect his heart and soul. THAT is going to cost a lot.

heart and souls don't score goals in playoffs. Last I checked we missed the playoffs 4 times in the last 5 years with Heart and Soul , maybe we could try having skill and soul

Would love Gallagher, not interested in him considering he would cost.

If Tampa had to give up a 1st + Nolan Foote to get Coleman, I can't imagine what Bergevin would ask for Gallagher.

That's like saying Domi can return a top 10 pick+ because Kapanen returned 15th. You just can't base trade values off the absolute worst trades made.

Love Gallagher if it comes down to it I would offer a little more per year and less term if long term is too scary for the Habs. We can't get rid of this guy hes still young and we would be lost without this guy causing chaos in front of the net.

Id give up Edmontons 1st, no desire to give up our D prospects though. Id add value if an extension is worked out.

Kapanen got the 15th OA. Gallagher would get way more. And the Habs would not trade Gallagher unless we got a similar sign/trade to Patch. The Oilers 1st would only be one part of 3.

Tatar vs ???
Suzuki vs ???
2nd vs ???

I wouldn't use the Kapanen trade as a value reference if I were you, considering everybody and their mother agrees that Rutherford got bent over.

I dont particularly care what you feel hes worth or what he'll get. I'm just saying what I'd give up for Gallagher as a 1 year rental. If that's not good enough then so be it. For him to come to the Oilers with no extension in place, I ( a random HF boards commenter) would offer our 1st in 2020.

Ps. Its not wise to make comparisons to players in completely different situations. Gallagher is clearly better than Kapanen but Kapanen has 2 years of contract before being an RFA, Gallagher has 1 year before UFA. Kapanen isn't the comparable but theres plenty of comparables that return more than a 1st. I'm just saying that's my offer. Sorry for getting involved in the forum.

We won't trade Gallagher as a 1 year rental though. If we have contract problems and a disappointing year, maybe we trade him at the deadline as a rental.

I don't particularly care about your perception of buying Gallagher at a low price cause he has 1 year left till UFA. Nurse has 2 years till UFA... I'll give you the 16th OA and Poehling for him? See how that feels

Again, I dont care what will happen or what your opinions of it are. OP posted this and implied that it would be for 1 year, so that is what I'm responding to. Just my comfortable offer, if it's not enough for you then so be it.

Your comfortable offer won't work. Thank's for dropping in and offering something though
