You also do it when the player is nowhere near giving what the salary is warranting. Not having Gallagher on the team and being obligated to play him because of his contract is worth more than the salary cap space.

Exactly. One thing every top team have in common is they don't have one bad contract. I mean, yes, They have a lot of hugh contract, but they don't have players grossly overpaid vs what they brings on the table. Wich Gallagher is maybe overpay by 4 millions. I don't see a player in Florida or Winnpeg ovetpaid by 4 millions over

I don't think looking at points show why Gally is worst than those. I mean. Anderson bring speed, physicality, play on PK, but yes, he is overpaid. Still, I prefer Anderson for those reason
Dach bring some physicallity and playmaking, still young
Newhook bring speed, I think someday he could become useful on PK like Anderson.
Gally and Dvorak are just liability. Dvorak brings faceoff, gally energy. Thats it, so thats expensive 6,5 and 4,5 for those element
Gallagher put up most of his points in the first 25 games before he ran out of gas.

We are stuck with Gally for one more year and can only pray for a miracle after that (LTIR). We got 1st for taking 1 year of Monahan 6M. There is no way we get rid of him in a trade even if we retain, he is so bad.

Caproom not an issue with Habs. Could buy him out or keep him 13th forward. Probably buy Gallagher out. 1.75m penalty next year but his caphit is 6.5m. So Montreal gains 4.75m in caproom. The following year we only gain 2.1m in caproom but it is 2 1 still.

Hey how about this: all five are bad and should be churned through at the earliest opportunity.
Unfortunately we have too much roster turnover coming up this summer so some of these underperformers and underachievers will stick around like barnacle.

I think the keep him next year as 13th, but we should consider buyout his last year.

Different reality now than then. The cap was super compressed at the time. Now the cap is projected up and way up, so the cost to dump salary won't be nearly as expensive as it was in a cap environment that was flat.

You're right, he has more points than those 4 incredible players, he must be good. At least Dach has the excuse of coming off a missed season and a major surgery. The other 4 are all among the worst in the league and can all go ASAP.

It's absolutely ridiculous that some people on this forum pretend that he's no longer an NHL level forward.
I don't know how anyone can watch this team and think that Brendan Gallagher isn't playing at a bottom six level.
He's quite clearly still an NHL calibre third and fourth line winger and the vocal contingent who try to pretend he isn't and start spewing nonsense in the game day threads each time he turns over the puck sound like absolute fools.
I'm sure these are the same hockey geniuses who said Jonathan Drouin wouldn't get another NHL contract a few years ago.
It's an embarrassing take.

Christian Dvorak, Josh Anderson and Alex Newhook are nowhere near being the worst players in the league.

He is our worst forward other than Pezzetta and we are one of the bad teams in the league. We can do better.
