New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival today at Monmouth. Giveaways, fun typical atmosphere down the Shore but today is all about New Jersey breds. Every horse was foaled in the state.

Woodbine (ON) handled over $18 million (US $) for what developed into a special 3-day weekend of racing with the King's Plate doing more than $8 million for its altered Friday card.

Jose Lezcano, John Velasquez and Irad Ortiz, Jr. will all serve suspensions this week for earlier infractions. They will not ride Wednesday anywhere. Johnny V. and Lezcano will not ride through Friday.

Add Jackie Davis for one day but I don't recall when that will be served.

good. especially lezcano and irad. they haven't been riding that well for quite some time now. they've both costed me frim cashing in some decent exactas the past few weeks. even when irad wins there's something about the way he's riding on those mounts that appears a bit off.

Get this: Brian Hernandez is suspended (to be served Labor Day) for his ride on Thorpedo Anna in the Travers. He used the whip one time more than what is allowed. imagine if she won the race, the fallout! .

It would have been the Vino Rosso Wood Memorial (Johnny V. vs. Alvarado) multiplied exponentially.

or going back in time to watch jorge chavez chopping, slashing and hammering horses down the stretch 40-50 times? some would petition punishment via firing squad. antley or smith would be next on deck.

Flavien Prat was named Jockey of the Week in part for three Grade I wins. He could be in the driver's seat for Eclipse Award's jockey of the year. Still some time to go.

Shaun Bridgmohan is unofficially 3-for-4 at this Saratoga meet. He seems to be riding mostly for Melanie Giddings and he has additional mounts with her this week.

Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Purses Boosted: Tampa Bay is generally regarded by many as the best turf course outside California during the winter months and with that is a popular destination. The new meet begins November 20 and runs into May 2025. Today the track announced that Florida-breds could reap the benefits. There will be 26 stakes races totaling $3,810,000, The Tampa Bay Derby is March 8.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Pick 5 Payouts (based on 50 cents): The early Pick 5 paid over $110,000 and the late Pick 5 returned over $45,000.
  • Four-Bagger: Luis Saez took advantage of the absences of Irad Ortiz, Jr., John Velazquez and Jose Lezcano, all suspended for riding infractions, to record perhaps his best day at the meet with four victories. Saez finished 8 4-0-2 and his 21 wins is now tied for sixth among all jockeys this meet. Saez also delivered today with some prices, not one of which was the favorite.
Race #OddsNote
212-1Longest shot in the race.
59-1Horse was winless in eight lifetime starts.
75-2Won by a head.
915-1Won by a nose.

  • Shaun Bridgmohan-Melanie Giddings Tandem: The jockey is 4 3-0-0 this meet with all of those rides for Melanie Giddings who is winless with 14 other starters. Bridgmohan is 6-for-60 this year. They have paired quite nicely this meet.
  • Flavien Prat was winless with seven mounts today. He failed to take advantage of the suspended Irad Ortiz, Jr. for meet leader. Ortiz is currently ahead by five.
  • Chad Brown has all but wrapped the trainers' title this meet. He currently has a 10-win lead over his closest challenger.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Paco Lopez ended a 28-race losing streak with a victory in the seventh race. He also won the eighth race,
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Post Time: Elevated to a morning post due to heat.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Post Time: Elevated to a morning post due to heat.
  • Perry Ouzts rode three times and twice his horses found glory. Every time Ouzts wins, he breaks his own record as oldest North America jockey to win a race. He is roughly 10 months away from his 71st birthday. He has won five of his past 14 rides.
Horseshoe Indy (Indiana):
  • Canceled: Due to heat.

nah 45 sounds about right. part of that young jockey group from the 2000's. cornelio velasquez alan garcia, & eibar coa
Fun fact about Cornelio Velasquez. The last time he rode in the States was the July 4 holiday card when Tyler Gaffalione tied the one-day win record at Gulfstream with seven (2017). I don't know if Cornelio retired, went elsewhere or something else but he never rode in the US again.
