I think the 2nd round picks are being overlooked in a big way with the discussions about this deal.

I think with the way this management and scouting team has drafted in the 2nd round the value of the assets acquired are...

1. Higher 2nd round pick
2. Other 2nd round pick
3. McNabb

Btw, before some anoint Fasching as a future star, at this time last year he was struggling for the NTDP with questions about his work ethic emerged. He was projected before the year as a 2nd round talent and fell in the draft.

Obviously he has bounced back and had a nice (but not dominant as some have said) freshman season for the Gophers, he has a nice combo of size and skill but far far from a sure thing.

I think the Kings can draft two players just as good as Fasching and especially Deslauriers so they essentially get McNabb for free. Plus as much as people want to call Deslauriers a "kid" in the hockey world he isn't a kid, he was going to have to make the team in the fall or be at risk to waivers.

If McNabb winds up being a cost-controlled, #4 or even #5 defenseman who becomes known as the Kings "hitting" defenseman with Fasching becoming a Top-6 guy for Buffalo then everyone is happy.

The two 2nds are pretty big. Deslauriers has always been intriguing but having to clear waivers next season would be a pretty big deal. Could of easily been another Hickey/Cliche/Clune/Ellerby situation where he is lost for nothing.

Good post Herby.

This is why I never marry myself or feelings to prospects. They are just that, Prospects.

The Two second round picks are huge For Futa and his team, they like taking swings in that round.

Also look at this from a development stand point. Nick was not going to be a top six player for the Kings. It's debatable if he was even a bottom six player.

Defenders are hard to develop and take YEARS. McNabb is pretty much done in the Minors development wise.

Hudson was four years at the minimum away from seeing an NHL roster.

it's far more valuable to have a kid on a good trajectory, than to have a draft pick. If last year's draft were to be redone, Fasching might be an early 2nd rounder, which is why we got so many picks out of him. we gave up a ton of value, but i can see why.

Also the call up is considered an emergency call up if i'm not mistaken, due to the injuries and Conacher still having delays getting a work visa. He may only be up for this 1 game. This isn't a case of rushing him right up before he's ready and ruining him.

Probably another reason he was moved. Folks around here that watch the Monarchs on a regular basis say he was going to have to spend another year in Manchester to develop the defensive side of his game.

Other teams' scouts surely noticed Deslauriers' raw ability, it's likely he would not have made the Kings roster and would have been scooped up on waivers by another team.

I have no idea if it's a valid comparison or not but from reading about McNabb I kinda picture him as Matt Greene with a slap shot.

Deslauriers playing a solid game. Couple nice hits. Couple decent shots. Nothing spectacular but overall he looks like he might belong. *Insert small sample size sentence here*

Buff used him on the point with McBain on the second PP unit as well. Interesting play by Nolan.

By all accounts Des had a very very good first NHL game and was one of Buffs best players. I got to watch most of the 1st and 2nd period and thought he fit right in. Couple of nice hits and a few nice passes. 4 shots on goal and one really good look. Way to go NickD!

Definitely invalid. How about all those points?

I'm thinking more of a Phaneuf.

If he was that good he would be in the NHL by now.

Sounds like he is gonna make a nice 3rd liner. Something the Kings have plenty of and have no room for him next year so the Kings likely woulda lost him.

On that note, on this trade. I'm somewhat disappointed. I generally feel the team that gets the best player generally wins the trade....and personally I feel like the Kings gave up the best asset.

That of course can change if DL scores big in the 2nd again...then again its gonna be hard with the last pick in the round:sarcasm:

I agree entirely. The only add is that we needed one of the picks we had to bring Gaborik on board so some of the value of the deal will have to depend on how well we do and how much 12 brings to the team this season.

Futa says that Both Nick and Hudson are going to be better than average bottom 6ers with the ability to bring a little bit more if they stick to it. I think Hudson might be a special player who could become a star in the league. Time will tell and my money is on Futa being right but damn if Hudson doesn't look allot like the real deal to me.

Did I say he was Phaneuf now??? :help:

Give him some time, he'll be lot closer to a Phaneuf than a Greene.

First Pronger, now Phaneuf. Quite the praise for a 23 year old d-man who couldn't crack the worst team in the league.

I don't hate McNabb, I am hoping that he will eventually be a solid all around 3rd pairing d-man and can't wait to see how he looks next season with a rookie camp and NHL camp under his belt. I just have no idea where you are drawing these comparisons from.
