Brandon Hagel

There's an endless amount of Hockey prospects who profiled similarly to Hagel who didn't amount to anything. Sabres just have the misfortune on giving up on a late bloomer and those with the privilege of hindsight get to make grand evaluations of competence

Forsling another example.

After reading this thread it's painfully clear how underrated Hagel still is. If Hagel were a center he'd easily win the Selke this year, will be a finalist for sure. Half as good as Nylander? LOL get the f*** out of here
Yep exactly why I said most underrated player in the league. He’s a stud

Here is a little story about Hagel.

My 12 yo stood just finished his game, and learned the Lightening (minus sick Kuch and Vasi) just finished practice at the same rink. He stood outside as the players drove out and waved at the cars to stop. All stopped to sign his hat. Hagel and Nick Perbix pulled over and had conversations with him. Asked about where he played, what his goals were, gave him advice, etc. Random kid, no cameras around to capture their good deed. That's hockey players for you.

I don’t think it’s a stretch at this point to put him in the convo with guys like Reinhart and Stone for best two-way winger in the NHL right now. 21:13 a night, #1 PK unit, tied for 1st in the NHL in SH points, tied for 6th in the NHL in even strength points.

He’s incredible.

It seems to take a long time to warm up to players with non-ideal pedigrees. If he was a top 10 pick I think he’d be more recognized

Pretty crazy that 2016 saw Hagel and Bratt, both drafted in the 6th round, both extremely underrated and both making a case for Top 5 picks in a redraft.

...and they were picked three apart.

Hagel > Nylander

Better player, better contract.

I got a thread locked for asking who was the better value after Nylander signed. I was told I was trolling.
Hes a bit worse than nylander but better contract. He plays with Kucherov the 2nd-4th best player in the league.

Hes a complimentary offensive player on his line vs nylander having to be main driver of offense for his line.

Leafs should have done the knies + 1st deal back in 2022 for Hagel + MAF

If not Knies throw 3 1sts. Hagel is a stud.

Anyways praying for leafs vs tampa R3 to see who can take break the 1-1 playoff tie at the moment. Should ve a good 7 game series

Hagel has spent the majority of this season on the 2nd line with Cirelli and Paul/Geekie. The first line is Guentzel-Point-Kuch

Hagel very rarely gets to play with Kuch and he is the one driving the play when he is out there.
If you’ve seen Hagel play you know he is not complimentary in any one thing.

Hes been with kucherov for quite some time now.

Money puck shows

hes played 174.5 mins with Hagel - Cirelli - Kucherov line

208.8 mins with Hagel - Cirelli - Geekie

So hes played 46% of time with Kucherov and 54% of time away from him

Guentzel has been on L2 and hasnt played with kucherov very much Recently

62 pts in 55 games wont make up for Nylander being the better player every year besides this one.

You do understand that Hagel has played almost ES 900 minutes this year, almost 1200 total, not 400, right? The vast majority of those minutes with Kucherov were on the PP

Sorry the site just showed the best lineups based on expected stats with his line only appearing twice there.

What are the other lines hes played with? How would I find that on moneypuck?

Hagel is having a great year but its a career year at 62 pts in 55 games. He needs to show he can be a ppg player longer before he passes nylander as a player whose been top 10 in winger scoring for 3-4 seasons now.

As a value asset hagel is worth a fair bit more than Nypander due to contracts

At this point he’s gotta be in the conversation for most complete player in the game. What doesn’t he do well? He’s fast, physical(especially pound for pound), strong 2way/PK skills, he can play gritty or he can flash finesse/top-line caliber skills. He can shoot. Has great vision and hands and can create/drive offense. Strong on the puck. Clutch. Mentally tough. He’s also extremely “hot” right now, like Hansel.

I think you may have the minutes slider up a little high, I set it to the lowest it can go which is 10 minutes and added all of Hagels' line combinations times together and got that he was on the ice with Kuch roughly 31% of the time.

Those are individual lines though, and there’s always time with other players. Before today at 5v5 he’s played 230:34 with Kucherov and 545:43 without him. So he’s spent just under 30% of his 5v5 ice time with Kucherov. Also going into today he only had 9 5v5 points with Kucherov on the ice out of 39 5v5 points. So he’s actually scoring at a better rate away from him. Overall this season, Kucherov has been in on only 13 of his now 62 points.

Those #s might be misleading, all I know is the best version of this current Tampa team is when Kuch/Point/Guentzel are together with Hagel/Cirelli anchoring the 2nd line. More often than not Hagel has proven he can drive offense and be a primary threat without Kucherov.

Why did he not sign with the Sabres? The Lightning acquired him before their last Cup run, and he will be playing on Team Canada at the Four Nations.

Context is sometimes a key thing. He did not have his break out season in the WHL till after the Hawks signed him. He was a so so player with the Red Deer Rebels til his last last

Kucherov has almost no influence on Hagel's production. only 7 of Hagel's 62 points involved Kucherov. The usage is misleading because when the star players need to "get going" , Cooper will put them with Hagel and/or Cirelli instead. He is not being carried by Kucherov in any way, shape or form.

Honestly he hasn't shown much on the PP. Which makes his production more impressive IMO.
