How do Lightning fans feel about the shocking trade that nabbed him for two first-rounders (and more)? I know it may seem like an obvious one given his stats of the last three years, but as an Avs fan I mostly remember him being invisible in the 2022 playoffs and thinking that the Bolts didn't get a lot of bang for the buck to support their threepeat. Not hating the player, I just think it's an interesting case of a win-now/keep-it-going dilemma.
Turned out he was playing on a broken foot.

Hagel was quite good and impactful vs the Leafs in round 1 that year. And the Leafs could of traded for Hagel but didn't choose to go for it

59 points in 56 games that season. Maybe he didn't "blow the doors off", but he was ~ a point per game.
He had only 49 pts in 72 GP his draft year and being PPG in the CHL as an overager isn’t exactly a huge achievement considering you are playing guys 3 years younger

Asking price was way too high

Knies + 1st (Easton Cowan)

Considering play style, Knies is a better fit. Big body guy that hits, Hagel would be another smaller skilled guy, we got too many of those already.

I'd much rather have Knies and Cowan in the system vs Hagel. Just a better fit for our roster and Cowan has lots of potential as well.

Because why would have a Brandon Hagel when you can have a Hand in Bagel?

Significantly better contract and value, he costs half as much as Nylander.

Not the better player, not even close. If you wanna be fooled the way you guys fooled yourselves about Sergachev being some elite 1D, be my guest.

Better value, absolutely Hagel ainec. Better player, Nylander.
Nobody on the Tampa board ever said that?

We knew much better than anybody else what Sergy was. We actually watched him every game, you know.

Nylander is better than Hagel but at this value you take Hagel every day of the week and it's not even close

Oh wait, here he is in 2017 at Dev Camp -- this time as #27.

I get that people think it's easy to dunk on the Sabres, but try better material.

“It makes me drive a little harder and try to get better every single day,” Hagel said about being let go by Buffalo. “Obviously it sucks but it’s nothing I can change. I just have to keep looking forward.

“I think I did what I had to do. I leave for camp right away and we’ll see what happens and if I’m back, I’m back.”
Hagel skated at Canadiens development camp in June and feels it’s been a case of so far, so good with Montreal.

“It’s been really positive. It’s my job now to prove [Buffalo] wrong and I think I put enough work in during summer. Now I need to prove myself.”

He then didn't get an offer from the Habs and didn't sign an NHL deal until into October with Chicago. The kid used not getting two different team offers as fuel.

People claiming it was that he didn't want to sign might want to actually do some research or just STFU.

It was a big step back from his previous year and he was a late pick. 6'2" D+2 guy being PPG in the WHL isn't anything special.

Obviously ended up being a mistake, but I'd be curious to look back at the 2018 Sabres board for their take on it.

EDIT: He also failed getting a contract in 2018 with Montreal after being invited to their dev camp.

Apparently 8 teams were interested in him after that.
