That is what will get it done for Brady and you have to move money. No ones taking Palat’s contract.

A pick that’s going to be in the high 20’s and 50’s is peanuts for the Devils at this point. Maybe a slight overpayment, but worth it for a cup.

Exactly. This proposal is an overpayment from NJ, but that's probably what it would take to get Ottawa to move him.

The only people who think it's a laughable offer are the people who essentially have unrealistic expectations for almost every major NHL trade.

The majority of trades involving star players in the NHL are more often than not "quantity over quality" returns.
Yep. Everyone always needs to remember that almost no NHL GM makes a move because "the value was just too good" especially for star players. Rather they decide they're going to move them in the first place and then take the best they can get which is almost always pennies on the dollar.

If Staios panics and decides that he needs to shake up the core and move Tkachuk, he'll bring back exactly what every other young-ish star has brought back in recent memory. Exactly one solid but not amazing roster player, exactly one first round pick (top 5 protected), exactly one prospect (probably the other team's second or third best), and exactly one other expiring deal to make the money work. If he doesn't, there's no amount of mythical "value" that is out there that would make him reconsider.

Obviously it makes speculation threads like this a little boring but it always amuses me seeing the same arguments about different guys that every team's fanbase swears is different from the rest when all NHL trades fit into one of like 5 categories.

I think he'd fit in perfectly with us. He's a big solid forechecker who can add to our offense. Those types are worth their weight in gold come playoff time when the games gets more physical.
100%. And if I were Chevy I would give up a lot for 4+ seasons of a Tkachuk.

But the Jets probably should not give up what Ottawa would want.

Ott: Nemec, Salaiyev, Mercer, 1st round pick 2025

NJ: Tkachuk, Sogaard

As a Montreal fan this deal and a lot of others in this thread heavily favors the Senators.

I know Tkachuk is a fan-favorite in Ottawa, but the most I could see him realistically get would be an "A" prospect, Nemec in this case, and a lower first or two.

Silayev is another "A" prospect in my books, which would already be stretching what Tkachuk should get in a trade if included alongside Nemec, and then you add Mercer, a very good middle-6 player, and another first that NJ has to give up?

Yeah, no.

If there's a trade to be made between the two teams, and I really don't think the chances are that high, the return for Tkachuk won't be nearly as big as that one.

You’re wrong, if the Sens trade Tkachuk in his prime all 31 teams will be in on it and you’re not getting him for whatever people from Mkntreal think is fair, you’re getting him for what Ottawa wants, this isn’t apples for apples, this is putting in enough to beat other teams in your division and your Cup rivals from acquiring him as well.

NJ, NYR, Philly, Carolina, Tampa, Florida, Boston will all want Tkachuk. Some are very asset rich like NJ and Philly so you’re also competing with teams who have picks and young players.

I don’t think fans are seeing the landscape clearly for Tkachuk. How Matthew turned the Florida franchise into a winner and you have his little brother who is bigger and an NHL captain with elite pedigree, massive trade return, this isn’t Patrick Laine or Kirby D’ach some soft player who’s busting, your trading for a future HOFer here.

What "turned Florida into a winner" is a heck of a lot more than Matthew Tkachuk.

It's trading for Sam Reinhart, identifying an undervalued Sam Bennett and Gustav Forsling, capitalizing on a high-ish draft pick in Lundell, and finding good depth players in guys like Eetu Luotsarinen and company.

That, plus getting a huge bounce-back playoff performance from Bobrovski and some good play by a lot of the roster last Spring.

Also, right now I don't think Brady Tkachuk tracks to be in the HHOF barring improvement. He's currently a very physical PPG winger that also sucks defensively and takes boatloads of bad penalties that sometimes burn his team; "Hall of Very Good" for sure, but HHOF might be pushing it in my opinion.

Also, just check the history of trades made for star players to gauge value for potential returns, bidding war or no, and then you'll see that your homer glasses and bias are making it tough for you to be objective.

I guess Mercer has replaced Holtz in these trade threads.
Difference is Mercer is actually good and he’s proven it. Holtz was indeed a throw in to most trades as he barely got any ice time.

Not to mention most of those threads were started by the same person. No hated directed at them as they’re just having some fun/killing some time on a message board.

Holtz was not seen as a throw-in for OP's posts. I feel like there have been dozens of iterations of this: first rounder, Holtz or Mercer, some scattered mess of picks and prospects for another team's star player. See here for an example of when he thought the Islanders would solve your goaltending problems for some reason. That thread was locked, and he decided to post another one asking about Sorokin, which was also locked. At least in this case the proposal is not with a divisional rival, so some improvement, I guess.

Again you’re talking about basically one dude. Devils fans give him enough shit for his proposals. He knows he makes a lot of them. It’s really not that big of a deal. It’s like getting mad that that one Montreal fan keeps making proposals.

If you don’t think Mercer, Nemec, and a 1st is a good package then I don’t know what to say. It’s a way better package than Holtz, Nemec, and a 1st would be.

I don't really care about the relative quality of the package. I'm making fun of the dude for posting the same structured proposals dozens of times and having those proposals get locked for being annoying. It's particularly funny because he kept including Holtz in them for awhile and in the end he ended up getting traded for way less value. And now Mercer is taking the Holtz spot in these trade proposals. It's not that deep.

Fair enough. As you were.

So basically the same package that is the typical return for most star players in a trade....

- Young roster player that was previously a high pick
- Additional highly regarded prospect
- 1st round pick
- Additional draft picks as needed

Ottawa fans want to keep Tkachuk. Of course in the abstract they will suggest that any trade would have to be an overpayment. That's standard for any fanbase asked to move a good player that has term. The issue is whether Ottawa the team wants to keep him. I presume they do and I'm skeptical he wants to leave. He signed there long term for a reason. Maybe this gets revisited when he has a short term left on his contract. Right now it sounds like just unsupported speculation. I get the NJ connection and sure, he'd probably be open to the idea in the abstract but I doubt he'd pound the table and demand he be sent there come hell or high water.
