The only people who think it's a laughable offer are the people who essentially have unrealistic expectations for almost every major NHL trade.

The majority of trades involving star players in the NHL are more often than not "quantity over quality" returns.
Lol good job however if someone went and created a proposal thread asking for Jack Hughes for the same exact package that you just put down and youd be scoffing at it.

I think Nemec would potentially be on the table.

But I think some teams might value Casey over Nemec...
Sens don’t really like undersized dmen so it’d probably have to be Nemec.

As a Sens fan though that’s basically the kind of deal I would expect assuming he goes for a package and not more of a 1 for 1 for a different star player. It’s obviously not thrilling but it never is

Nemec has done nothing in Jersey. Just move him if Tkachuk is the get. It's kind of a no brainer.

If the Senators prefer a big D, maybe offer up Silayev instead.

Nemec/Silayev
Mercer
2026 first

Sens would at least think about it.

That is a fair proposal.

The problem here is the laughable concept that Brady and Jack are comparable assets.

Hischier (now) would be a more fitting comp to brady in the offseason, although he plays a much more valuable position and makes a million dollars less.

Or an add to the Meier package if you want a more stylistic and positional fit.

And the other biiig reason there’s no comparable (to Jack OR to Hischier) is because New Jersey is actually a good team in a compete window right now and would seek to add players in their prime right now rather than subtract them.

Ottawa is a team that looks to still not be in a compete window yet, and such a team is often in a position to dish off its prime-age assets when they’re at their most valuable, for younger assets or futures to try to have those hit their primes when the team enters a compete window.

I’m a fan of both teams (Devils #1, Sens #2, live near Ottawa and theirs are the only home games I attend) so I’m not throwing shade on either. It’s just a case of team timelines. If Ottawa was currently comfortably in playoff position and New Jersey was struggling in their division basement with little immediate hope, I’d be suggesting the same principles with the teams reversed - again, the team in the window should trade futures for prime age talent, the team struggling should trade prime age talent for a younger core.

I no longer believe Ottawa will compete with Tkachuk as their leader and I think their best bet is to get top value for him while he’s in his prime and aim to build a team around a core of players in the Stutzle-to-Yakemchuk age range. And I don’t think there’ll be a better time to get top dollar for Tkachuk than this year.

NHL fans will always be underwhelmed by the returns of star players.

There are 2 good comps to figure out where Brady would fall between assuming a trade next offseason

Meier as a floor, with Brady getting more because he is slightly younger (about half a year with Meier being traded in his age 26 season and Brady in this scenario being traded going into his age 26 season), and more of a pest.

Matthew as a ceiling, with Matthew getting more because he was younger and significantly better.

He'll fall somewhere in between there if he's traded this offseason.

It will be a lot closer to the Meier return than people expect tho if it happens

I assume Ottawa retains 50% on Tkachuk in this trade? Because there is this thing called the salary cap....
Brady at 50% starts with three 1st round picks + elite prospect, not even joking.

Brady Tkachuk at 4.1M would be more valuable than McDavid at his current salary

See how defensive you just got now you know exactly how Ottawa fans feel when new jersey fans try using third line mercer as a base.

That's how these trades go.

They are virtually always for quantity.

And the fans of the selling team exclaim how their guy is different right up until it inevitability happens again.

I'd be scoffing at it not because of value because they'd be getting an established young player plus a blue chip prospect, a first round pick and 3 second round picks but because the Devils are trying to come out of their rebuild and adding picks and prospects doesn't help them right now.

For a team like Ottawa it's a culture shock while adding an absolute haul of tradeable assets for a player that isn't untouchable. If this was an offer for Stutzle it would have zero hope but for Tkchuck it shouldn't be seen as an insult.

The OP is a fairly large overpayment by NJ but I also understand why Ottawa fans would say no, it's a lot of hopes and lottery tickets for an established player that just happens to be their captain.

Sens don't want prospects and picks. If a trade of this magnitude ever went down (and it won't) then NJ would have to do a hockey trade. Think along the lines of Bratt or Hischer moving the other way bud.

Okay, I don't know where your hostility is coming from unless it's unintentional bud.

Nemec straight up smells like a poor man’s Pronger for Shanahan.

Very limiting if you want players. We all know it would have to be before their trade protection kicks in.

Devils would not trade Nico and destroy their center depth, so that's out. Someone like Bratt or Meier makes sense value-wise, but both players have full NMC's that I doubt they'd waive (or NJ would even risk alienating them by asking them to waive).

Doesn't appear there's much of a deal to be made if younger guys/prospects like Mercer, Nemec, Casey or Silayev are the main pieces going back.

Hamilton would be the only big roster piece that makes sense for NJD to move out.

I wouldn’t trade for Brady Tkachuk, New Jersey already has 6 players over 20 mins in penalties, the Devils don’t need Tkachuk flying off the handle for every little hit and sitting in the box hurting the Devils defensively.

I wanted tkachuk on the devils but I don’t see it ever happening now that the devils went out and got timo Meier and locked him up.

It looks like Ottawa will once again miss the playoffs. The Sens need a shake up. With Brady Tkachuk seemingly being in trade talk headlines, and the connection to Tom Fitzgerald (cousin) and New Jersey (wife from there) can't help but think he might want to be a Devil.

My proposal:

To New Jersey:
Brady Tkachuk

To Ottawa:
Dawson Mercer
Seamus Casey
2025 2nd round pick (NJ)
2025 2nd round pick (EDM)
2026 1st round pick (NJ)
2027 2nd round pick (NJ)
Pass

It’s funny how NJ fans. say how bad BT is, but constantly make proposals for him.

Counter
To Ottawa
Jack Hughes

Amadio
Gaudette
First
Second
Second

Better do it before July 1st cause there’s no way Brady would waive to live in the Peg
You mean where his mom is from, and grandparents

Great trade Jack Hughes for quantity then,
I’ll wait.
