Brady Tkachuk refuses a power play

Did he hit his helmet? It looks like it form video, but hard to say for sure. Couple thoughts:

1. If he hit his helmet, it 100% should still be a penalty. Glad it didn't hit him/player wasn't hurt, but it's still high sticking contact that should be penalized.

2. I wouldn't have minded if it was a penalty still, even if there's no helmet contact. You should be penalizing the action, not necessarily the result. Extreme example - player 1 gets pissed off, grabs his stick with both hands and take a baseball bat style swing at another player's head....but misses. Shouldn't he still be penalized for the action, despite no contact? Same idea here - the player raised his stick high very close to a player's face.

I think it’s easier to police result than intention for the vast majority of infractions.

Are you comparing a legal stick lift play to a baseball bat swing at somebody?
No, it shouldn't be a high sticking call if contact wasn't made. Just because you missed the stick lift doesn't mean you tried to whack the player in the face. Yes, if you swing with intent to hurt/hit somebody and you miss, the intent is still there for a penalty. But you took this and went to the extreme.

Well that sucks, whether it is Keith, Matthew or Brady I always take comfort in despising the Tkachuks. Brady does something like this all I can think of is how Don Cherry probably would have loved this and had it on Coach's Corner praising Brady for his honesty. So yeah, good move by Tkachuk, not like we don't see a ton of embellishments out there. I have to say though did that really not hit him? It looked like it did, but maybe it missed him.

It obviously was a reaction. If a stick comes flying into the area of your face you are going to flinch. You aren't robotic.

Terrible idea. Your extreme example isn't what you're proposing by issuing a penalty here, This wasn't a fit of rage that missed it's intended target, this was an almost high-stick. If you start penalizing almost penalties, where do you draw the line? Every time a player raises his stick to the height of the shortest player in the lineup a penalty is called? Every time a stick ends up between an opposing players legs, a tripping penalty is called because he could have tripped on it?

Of all the times these guys get high sticked I think that might be a normal reaction for a hockey player to react that way. This is split second thinking. Tkachuk obviously thinks he is going to get whacked and normally he would, so he reacts in a split second as if it is coming. When it doesn't come, he's honest about it. I mean, why not just sell it if you think he was embellishing? You don't see an embellishment and then a player decline the penalty.

I got a little smack on the head while out running early in the morning. Looked around, and saw a crow flying away. Then I realized it didn't hurt. Until I saw the crow, I thought i was being mugged.

Ya I don't think people can sell high sticks that well. Looked more like a oh lord its coming reaction. Then afterwards realized it missed him.

Embellishments usually have a lot more of a delayed reaction as they compute.

It absolutely, should be without question, not a natural way to react. When something comes close to your face like that, yes, you'll flinch, but you will 100% not throw your head back that far like you are stretching and keep it there for a split second and then grab at your fact with your hand. I have no idea how anyone, with completely honestly, can think that's a natural reaction.

Bad leadership. Good leadership is that time when, late into an elimination game against Boston down a goal, Hurricanes Captain Justin Williams grabbed Bergeron or Marchand's stick, pulled it to his head area, then jerked back like he'd been high sticked. Truly that is a commitment to winning.

Refs didn't buy it and penalized Williams tho
