I don’t think the Sens can afford to trade Brady if he’s willing to play out his contract even if he won’t re-sign. We have been bad for too long and they need some wins, even if they are short-lived. But I don’t get the idea of him forcing a trade to Florida.

IMO the Sens have two choices if he won’t re-sign no matter what when his contract is up:

1. Trade him this year before the NMC kicks in
2. Keep him and let him walk as a UFA*

*assuming the team is good. Good teams don’t really trade key players in the last year of their deal, unless like Rantanen they don’t have a ton of trade protection. With a NMC if the Sens are good they would likely just have to cut their losses for one last attempt to win. And if he could force his way out before then, we’re probably just better off moving him now.

The only way Brady is traded is if he explicitly asks out after this season. I don’t think there’s any chance they would proactively trade him before the NMC because he might (probably will) leave as a UFA.

They’d much rather have him even if it’s just for 3 more seasons.

And really, despite all the noise and talk in this thread, I don’t actually think he will ask out. I think he wants to win with the guys in this locker room, and he’s going to get that opportunity.

Yeah I agree with all of that. I think we’d be stupid to trade him now unless he asks, it was more or less just to point out that if they keep him, it should be with consideration that we might actually just never trade him at all.

Like if 2028 is the best team we end up icing in a decade, but Brady won’t re-sign, you kind of just have to hope you win and let him walk at that point. Which is why I don’t fully get the NMC comments from Strickland.

Would Florida really have the assets to get Brady?

Almost all their desirable players have NMCs. They don't have a strong prospect pool. Anton Lundell and Spencer Knight are the only big name younger players without trade protection, and other teams could easily beat those as headlining pieces.

Unless the point is that in 4 years he is going to Florida. I'll just say a lot can change in 4 years. Matthew could be out of his prime with a lot of tough minutes on his body. Florida could be entering a re-tool or a rebuild.

The only way I could see it happening is that if they could flip Lundell for Lafreniere, because I could see our ownership group loving the idea of bringing in a marketable Francophone (supposed to be but hasn't been so far) superstar. But why does New York do that if they also want Tkachuk?

The only way it makes sense is if the Sens keep him beyond his NMC, because then something like Lundell, a late 1st, and a random B level prospect makes sense as the return. Similar to how Miller went for nowhere near his top value.

I am a big Brady fan and want him to remain a cornerstone of the franchise but I can see a scenario where the Sens trade him. Besides being a big time player his recognition factor amongst American fans has gone up dramatically after these games. I can see a US team owner using him to put bums in the seats and convincing his GM to overpay the Sens to get him. Basically the Sens get an offer so good they can't refuse it.

Brady tied with 3 other players for second leading goal scorers with 3 goals in the 4 nations cup! One behind Nate the Great who scored 4 to lead all players in the tournament.

The Sens management will build around him as the leader and will get some better players to support him for many years to come. He is the player you build around to win championships.

The Senators need to make the playoffs asap or he will be gone. Teams have seen what he can do in a playoff-like format, he has proven it to himself. No way that he wouldn't want to feel this way each season, no way that following this hype and this great performance he would casually go back to annual .50% hockey. This year, at latest next year and he will ask to leave.

Brady, fella....this is your coming out party. Use it to send your game to the next level permanently. It's in you to be a PPG+ monster power forward from here on out.

Why? He's allowed to be proud of his country. I'm obviously still glad he lost.

Don't think too much about the politics of multi-millionaire professional athletes.
The whole thing combined with the booing of the Canadian anthem and the proud singing of the US and the players making it extra emotional WITH everything going on right now really left a bad taste for me.

I love Brady and was one of the first to want him drafted and to defend him every opportunity.

But all things equal, I’d really rather have good ol Canadian boys playing for us, right now at least. (Someone find a time machine and reverse the stone and Paul trades please)

Idealism. Never mind. Brady is one of the best senators of all time. I want him here as long as he wants to be here.
