Hope the new guys all have a nice debut. Hopefully, it will somehow reinvigorate Zinger now that he has survived the trade switcheroo window. Would love to see October Zinger again.

Puck jumps over his stick on his first shift. Probably a combo of bad ice and nerves. It happens.
After that, he played well. Particularly when you consider it being his first game with a new partner.
Would have been nice for him to pot one of his chances. He is definitely not a dynamic finisher.

It’s going to get annoying around here whenever he makes a bad play, isn’t it?

Skjei is immediately a whipping boy because they gave up a 1st round pick to get him. Couple that with folks buying into Ranger fan gripes about him. He'll have a steep hill to climb to gain respect/trust from some fans. Personally, I liked what I saw tonight. He's fast, moves the puck well, and was more dangerous than anyone not named Aho. A lot of looking a gift horse in the mouth around here.

a GiFt HorSe that cost a first?

A defenseman that was available, has skill and played on a top pairing for the Rangers. So, you know, not an AHLer with a high probability of failure.

The reality is we lost 2 invaluable defenders indefinitely. If a goalie deal isn't going to work you have to fill those spots. You don't tuck tail and run when you're 2 pts out of a WC spot with 20 games left.

People will complain about everything. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

we have so many picks in the top 60 even now. how many? 3? i know there are some folks hung up on the price, but that's a talented defenseman out there. it's crazy how much things have changed regarding development of defensemen. it used to be okay for a guy to be 25-26 and not be a completed project especially on defense. he's going to absorb some of slavin and pesce by osmosis with as athletic as he is for his size.

You don’t give up an unprotected first round pick either way.

also:
Not to a rival who has a better chance of making the playoffs than you do with a farm as good as yours
Not for a position that you 1000 of
Not when you lose your two goalies
Not when you lose another someone in a position you have the least of
Not to a rival that helps them with their cap issues

Skjei isn’t good enough to make up for how dumb the deal was. Yes he’ll become the whipping boy because of it.

Agree. In a vacuum, maybe a 1st rounder for him is an okay deal. But because of all the things you mention, plus we gave the Rangers Gauthier for no reason a week prior, and even as things are we can never beat them, and this draft year is supposedly the best in ages.

Even if the wheeled fall off both the canes and the leafs it is extremely unlikely that either of them naturally fall into the last 10 in standings. There are some bad teams this year.

if the leafs and canes are 11th and 12th in the standings there is about about a .2 percent chance than both get drawn for the lottery.

this board is loosing their f***ing minds over something that is simply not going to happen.

Its not that both could get pulled. If Toronto is pulled, we went from 2 picks in the best draft to 0 for a guy we didn’t even need.

also, in the likelihood that we are 13th and 14th in the draft, Skjei isn’t worth the 14th pick in this season’s draft, IMO. In most drafts, sure, but not this one.

You still don't see why we traded Gauthier?

Aho's not going anywhere. Staal's contract is immovable. Necas is our future 2nd line C. And we just got Vinny for two more years.

We moved Gauthier because he had no future here anymore.

It's a calculated risk that was taken with the picks. You could play it the risk-aversive way, but then you end up paying premium for it.
If Waddell and Dundon are betting men and I bet they are. The current odds (moneypuck.com) that the Leafs make the playoffs are 68% and that the Leafs make the playoffs are 67.1 percent. Therefore the odds that eother or both of the teams make the playoffs are about 89.5 percent

Gauthier was never a center, so I don't see what the center depth chart has to do with anything.

You have absolutely no way of knowing that to be true. There a way too many examples of top 20 picks going nowhere. Just as many becoming 3rd and 4th liners.

Same to you though. If this was a position of need, then the risk was worth it. It isn’t a position of need so it isn’t worth the risk.

You may believe that but clearly GMBC felt this was a position of need. And since they make the calls and Dundon signs the checks maybe it is worth waiting a bit before declaring them wrong.
